“He’s tall, much taller than you, I’m sure,” Chloe whispered into the telephone, her hand cupped over
her mouth.
“What else?” came the bored reply. The other party tried to stifle a yawn.
“I don’t know. There’s nothing much else that stands out. Oh, wait a minute! There’s a scar running
down the side of his left cheek,” Chloe’s voice rose a notch and the girl on the other end could hear her
best friend’s excitement. “He has beady eyes and thick eyebrows and very thin lips. He reminds me of
Mr Withers, the school gardener, only much more sinister.”
Now, Megan’s interest was aroused. The neighbourhood was usually quiet and there were hardly any
strangers around. Pressing the receiver to her ear as she continued to listen to Chloe’s description of the
man and his actions, Megan walked to the window and peered out. From where she was, she could only
see a corner of the back of the man. “Yes, yes,” she whispered back, “I see the black bag. It looks like a
doctor’s bag, but he certainly doesn’t look like one. Do you think, maybe … oh, no … I don’t even want to
think about that, but do you think maybe it contains tools? You know, those tools they were talking about
on ‘Crime Night’ yesterday? I thought our neighbourhood was safe … but now, I don’t know, Chloe. What
do you think?”
However, the line had gone dead. Megan looked out the window and a chill coursed through her body.
The man was nowhere in sight. Had Chloe done the unthinkable? Chloe had always been very rash. Just
then, there was a knock on her door. Megan rushed to open it, thinking that Chloe had come over. “Ah!”
she screamed and backed away, but the man with the dark red scar down the side of his cheek walked
towards her. “What do you want?” Megan stammered. “What did you do to Chloe?”
The man stared at Megan blankly and put his finger to his lips. “Chloe is your friend? She shouldn’t
have interfered. If she hadn’t come out of her house, she would have been safe. If you had just stayed in
your room instead of peering behind the curtains, you would have been safe too.”
Leaping towards Megan suddenly, the man grabbed her hands, deftly tied them up with a thick rope
and locked her in one of the rooms. Then he breezed through the house indifferently, throwing valuables
into a black rubbish bag that he had taken out from the doctor’s bag.
