CHAPTER 2: PROBATION
A.PROBATION
- From the latin verb “probare” to prove, to test
- The origin of probation can be traced to English criminal law of the middle ages.
- On august 7, 1935. This created a probation office under the department of justice and
provided probation for first offenders 18 years of age and above who were convicted of
certain crimes.
- Is one of the most common forms of community correction. It is the disposition under
which a defendant after conviction of an offense. The penalty of which does not exceed
six years of imprisonment is released subject to the condition imposed by the releasing
court under the supervision of probation.
- Is a privilege granted by the court to a person convicted of a criminal offense to remain in
the community instead of actually going to prison or Jail.

B. EVOLUTION OF PROBATION
- As most of us already known, probation was brought into existence in this country by a
relatively small number of dedicated individuals, most whom were volunteers.
- The first name that comes to mind is that john Augustus whose the pioneer work and
around Boston during the mid 1800’s earned for him the title of father of probation.
C: PIONEERS IN THE FIELD OF PROBATION

- JONH AUGUSTUS the father of probation is recognize as the first true probation officer.
And Augustus was born at Woburn Massachusetts in 1785. He Is a Boston shoemaker,
first to develop a sustained service to promote temperance and to reclaimed drunkards
although later he begun to take a men and women changed with other crimes
eventually children. As indicated

D. OTHER IMPORTANT PERSON AND EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF PROBATION


- Probation is the suspension of a jail sentence the individual who is on probation has
been convicted of a crime but instead of serving jail time. Has been found by the court
to be amenable to probation and will be returned to the community for a period in
which they will have to abide to certain conditions set forth by the offenders adapt to
living in the community to guide and help them to behave in a lawful and responsible
way.
- Probation have been found guilty of the crimes with which they are charged.as such
their freedom are limited as panishment
- The father of probation

- He is also the most prominent volunteer not only did he provide direct services to the
court and to hundreds of offenders but he was an effective spokesman of probation.
