“Like a silent wall, the house defies the noise and bustle of daily life.”
The Idea
A challenging plot within South Delhi responds to the
adjacent ecosystem through its concrete form that
addresses residential architecture through a play of
light, volumes, and proportions. The design objective
was to challenge the inertia that has invaded everyday

Lounge Area
As one walks up the central stairs, a lounge area
designed in bright colors and minimalistic furniture
welcomes one to the first floor. A large balcony with
floor to ceiling fenestrations brings in ample natural
light. The design attempts to create a dialogue
between internal space and environmental context.
Private Dining Space

The design adopts simple geometries to draw delicate yet
dramatic play of both light and volume. The dining area in the
double-height central space is an example of just that. Bright
colors and geometric shapes in the form of decorative light come
together to form a space of intrigue in the centre of the house.
An accent wall in exposed concrete is personalised by adorning it
with hand made artefacts.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom sits on one side of the floor plate
and is designed to be minimalistic with a splash of
colors that enliven the space. Exposed concrete ceiling
combines with white walls and grey flooring that
become a backdrop for the yellow to bring playful life
within, one that is adorned through elements of light
and volume.
Guest Bedroom
The guest bedroom on the other side of the floor plate
doubles up as a lounge as well as bedroom space. It
follows the same color palette as the master bedroom
thus having pops of color that enliven the space. Slit
windows on either walls bring in natural light thus
adding a play of light and shadow as well.
The third floor follows the same layout as the lower floor. It houses

the kid’s bedrooms flanked on two ends of the floor plate. As one
relax and unwind and the passage then leads one to the the two
walks up the stairs, a lounge area in the passage forms a place to

Daughters’ Bedroom
One of the daughters’ bedroom is designed in shades
and textures of white, but what makes it stand out is
the innocence that the colors brings in. A small study
area tucked in one side and a large window seating
become spaces for the daughter to unwind and relax.
Daughters’ Bedroom
The other daughters’ bedroom is adorned in shades of
pink and grey against the white background. A cozy
corner having a slit window provides the views of the
outside thus connecting the privacy of the rooms to
the outside.

The top floor of the house actually houses the social areas where
on one side and a dining area on the other side take up this floor
space. A compact courtyard in the living room connects to the

The house is ingeniously imbued with light and air. The
living space is devoted to daily life, with the insertion
of a concrete wall dedicated to the expression of
creativity running within the family. The space opens
out to a narrow landscaped area which is open to the
sky and thus brings in natural daylight.
Formal Dining Area

The dining area on this floor serves as a gathering and
interactive space on this floor. Designed in pristine
white against the greys of the flooring and warm

Entertainment Room
The entertainment room forms a space that would
bring everyone together to enjoy the space created
within. Wooden surfaces continue on to the central
spine and merge well with the blues and greys of
this room. It also doubles up to enhance the acoustic
quality of the room. The pool with retractable roof
creates spaces that promote development of modern
individuals.
Terrace
The open-to-sky terrace becomes a place of leisure
for the whole family to gather and spend quality time
together. The artwork from the courtyard in the living
room below continues on the terrace and further on to
the elevation. The terrace is provided with landscape
elements that help bring nature in and enliven the
space.
Section across Courtyard

A section across the courtyard also highlights the
interaction between the floors vertically and how they
are planned and laid out on all the floors. A staircase in
the entrance foyer brings one upstairs to the first floor
consisting the kitchen and parents bedroom along
with a lounge area. As one goes higher the rooms are
placed on either sides of the floors and open out to
the neighborhood. The pool on the top floor becomes
a place to unwind.
Section across the Staircase

A section along the staircase highlights the
connection of all the spaces in the house. Spaces
along the staircase like the passages are also utilised
to their fullest capacity.
Elevation
Cleverly arranged building elements made of exposed
concrete and glass reflect the incident light and create
lively shadow plays during the course of the day. Slit
windows provide a glance to the outside world and
brings in natural light, while adorning the otherwise
somewhat bleak facade. The austere and blank façade
conceals the playful life within, one that is adorned
through elements of light and volume.
Conclusion
The design of the house proposes a new lifestyle in
contrast with urban context, along with individual privacy.
Responding to the site and its compactness, the architect
concludes, “ For us this house was an absolutely acute
exercise in square inches, here every inch counted, not in
terms of space utilisation and functionality, but in terms of
light, material and budget.”
