Why recommend HP LTO Ultrium Tape?

1. High capacity/scalability in a small footprint
HP StoreEver LTO-6 Ultrium Tape Drives enable up to 6.25 TBs of compressed capacity
(2.5:1) to be kept on a single compact tape cartridge and enables organizations to keep
pace with data growth by scaling to virtually unlimited capacities by simply adding in
more cartridges. With high capacity in a small footprint, tapes are easily stored in a safe
or vault at regular ambient conditions to reduce physical storage space. The current LTO
tape format roadmap shows the technology scaling up to 32 TB of compressed capacity
per cartridge by Generation 8.

2. Cost-effective and energy efficient

At approximately 2.5¢ per Gbyte4 (compressed), LTO Ultrium Tape offers one of the
lowest costs per Gbyte for long-term storage – particularly when factoring in physical
space and energy costs. Tape is also cool – literally! Tape is one of the greenest storage
technologies and meets the dictates of many data centers that if data isn’t being used
it shouldn’t consume any energy. Tape storage has been shown to decrease storage
power requirements by 99% when compared to disk-based storage.

“Every time I calculate power consumption for tape systems

vs. disk systems, tape systems win. Tape drives use very little
power while they’re not doing anything. Whereas with disk
drives, you buy the system once, you power it all day long
every day.” Curtis Preston

3. Durable and dependable

The bottom line for any data protection is that the data can be restored when it’s
needed. The last decade has seen major technology advances to increase the reliability
of tape and tape media. In fact, it can be said that tape is inherently more reliable than
disk due to the stability of tape magnetism, a bit error rate that’s superior to disk, and
read-after write data verification as standard.

LTO Ultrium delivers long-term durability with media specified to a 30-year shelf-life,
6x longer than the expected life of a hard-disk drive. Furthermore, the open standard
Linear Tape File System (LTFS) delivers investment protection by eliminating software
and system dependencies, maximizing the recoverability of files in long-term archive.

Data in transit and at rest has been given additional security protection from LTO-4
onward through hardware based data encryption which prevents unauthorized access.
LTO-4, LTO-5 and LTO-6 drives employ the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with
the longest and most secure keys, 256 bits, designed to be compliant with the emerging
standard for tape drive security, IEEE 1619.1.

4. The last line of defence

Tape is off-line to the threat of virus, hackers, software issues or human error. Unlike
disk arrays, a virus on tape cannot infect other data on that tape, nor can it spread to
other tapes within the library. When an infected file is backed up onto tape, the virus
remains dormant.

5. Easy to use
LTFS with LTO-5 and LTO-6 makes tape as easy to use as disk. HP LTFS software
extends the operating system functionality, enabling the data on an LTFS tape to be
access by a file system, similar to that found on disk drives using drag-and-drop, and
commands like, copy, move and delete.

Play 2 - Reducing management overheads

Who: Mid-size to Enterprise businesses struggling with the IT overhead and cost involved of
managing backup processes and media.
Ask your customer if consolidating their storage into a single easy-to-manage solution would
help productivity?
Why: Analysts suggest that IT consolidation typically saves around 20%, and consolidating
the backup process to a tape library simply makes good business sense by reducing the
acquisition cost, improving media usage and increasing manageability – more TB of data can
be managed per person because there are fewer devices involved. Furthermore, by using
automated solutions human error can be minimized in the backup process.
• Licensed with HP CommandView TL, HP ESL G3 Tape Libraries allow multiple distributed
libraries (HP MSL, HP EML in addition to HP ESL Libraries) to be managed through one pane
of glass.
• The Libraries can be easily and automatically partitioned using AMP to handle different
applications, shared environments, and separate service environments without
reconfiguring software every time you make a change.

Play 3 – Data management through active archiving

Who: IT Manager faced with the challenge of mounting data volumes on disk and those in
Media & Entertainment, Surveillance, Healthcare, Scientific or Geological environments with
large numbers of rich media assets and files including film, music, surveillance footage,
medical or scientific imaging.
Ask your customer if they are looking to reduce the cost and overheads involved in storing and
retaining their organizations data.
Ask these customers about their digital assets – how valuable are they? How frequently do they
need to be restored, repurposed and montetized? How much does it cost to store and retain
them? How confident are they that they will be able to restore assets when needed?
Why: Digital archiving is one of the fastest growing storage requirements. ESG research
estimates that the total worldwide cumulative digital archive will reach 300,000 Petabytes
by 2015. The low total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) delivered by tape is one of the compelling
reasons that position it as an ideal solution for digital archiving, removing ‘cold’ data from
primary storage to both reduce cost and improve disk performance. LTO-5 and LTO-6 with
LTFS are opening up a wide range of solutions for vertical markets characterised by high
volume, high resolution files that need to be captured, shared and retained for future use.
This is because:
• Tape offers the lowest cost of ownership for these large digital files - at approximately
2.5¢ per Gbyte (compressed) with LTO-6 media, and with power requirements a fraction of
those required for disk.
• Tape offers the long term durability that’s needed for the retention of valuable assets – for
example in the Media & Entertainment space, repurposing digital assets such as archive
film footage is the life-blood of the industry.
• With up to 6.25 TBs of compressed capacity on a single cartridge, LTO-6 Ultrium provides
high volume storage in a small physical space in environments where floor space is often
at a premium.
• LTO-5 or LTO-6 with LTFS makes tape interoperable – so it’s an ideal vehicle for data
interchange across workflows. LTFS also makes tape as easy to use, with a modern,
familiar interface that provides users with faster, easier direct access to files on tape.
• The libraries further facilitate active archiving by providing high levels of data transfer and
through offering HP TapeAssure to support the integrity of data storage, tape-based data
encryption for added security and tape tracking bar-codes and software to enable tapes to
be clearly identified and easily found.

Play 4 – Long-term data archive

Who: Businesses requiring to retain and protect sensitive data for longer periods of time.
Ask your customer if the data they need to retain for longer periods of time to comply with
legislation or company policies is taking up valuable disk space?
Why: If requested, companies must retrieve information that they have archived for
compliance. They need to be confident that the data is still there when it’s needed. Tape has
been referred to as the “Digital Curator of the Information Age”6, this is because:
• Tape stands the test of time - studies have shown that tape is inherently more reliable
than disk for longer-term storage. With media specified to a 30-year shelf-life, LTO Ultrium
provides an ideal long-term data retention solution.
• Tape cartridges are designed and built to withstand heavy use and long term warehousing
off-site. They are also better suited to being moved around than hard disk drives. HP ESL
G3’s bulk media load and unload feature is ideal for moving cartridges into and out of
archival storage.
• Tape has a lower TCO – multiple studies have shown that LTO Ultrium Tape is up to 15x7
more cost efficient for longer term data retention due to low cost of media and the fact that
the data is held offline without the need for power or cooling.
• Tape has added data security – customers can purchase LTO WORM cartridges to prevent
accidental overwrite of the data stored on tape. Furthermore, HP LTO-4, LTO-5 and LTO-6
feature hardware based data encryption providing added security for data in transit and
at rest.
• Hardware based data encryption is enabled through HP’s Enterprise Secure Key Manager
(ESKM), or by license to SafeNet’s KMIP compliant encryption key manager
• Restore data with minimal dependencies - by using the open standard LTFS functionality
with LTO-5 and LTO-6, data can be restored independently from the original backup
application or platform making restore of long-term archival even easier.

Play 5 - Handling ‘Big Data’ Applications

Who: IT Manager of organizations requiring high performance streaming solutions – for
example scientific data capture solutions, medical monitoring and imaging, or video
streaming applications.
Why: Scientific analysis applications like weather satellites or oil exploration also generate
vast data sets that are often stored on tape, for example the National Centre for Atmospheric
Research creates over 60 TB per month. Tape is designed for high performance streaming
applications such as these:
• Big data applications can make the most of tape’s high speed streaming capabilities – up to
1.4 TB of compressed (2.5:1) data per hour with standalone LTO-6 drives, and with a fully
populated HP ESL G3 Tape Library it is possible to achieve blistering performance to store
up to 138 TB of compressed data every hour.
• Furthermore, with high capacities, LTO-6 can store a great deal more TV or movie data
cost-effectively and reliably for many years. Even then, it is estimated that to archive the
current universe of movies and TV film would require over 2.5 million LTO-6 tapes.
• HP ESL G3 also offers high availability features to ensure that these critical applications are
protected against host failover.

Play 6 - HP Tape Media

Who: All businesses - every customer requires tape media in their tape library.
Ask your customer if they would be interested in reducing the hidden cost of less reliable media
that can mount to become a significant drain on resources.
Why: HP has been the leader in LTO cartridge shipments for nearly eight years8. That
leadership is due to the outstanding quality of its LTO Ultrium storage media. This is
achieved by extensive, ongoing testing of tapes destined to become HP brand to ensure
they perform to the highest possible standard on both HP and non HP drives. How does HP
ensure its storage media is always reliable? Simply by performing the most comprehensive
study of error rates, capacity and transfer rate that technology can deliver.
• Error rates tell us how much margin there is before failure. Did the backup and restore
operation only just complete successfully, or did it complete with lots of margin? Poor
error rate can lead to slower transfer rates, reduced cartridge capacity and, ultimately,
backup and restore failure.
• Error rate is not an abstract concept. Capacity and transfer measurements are real-life
metrics in that customers may observe for themselves if a tape is performing badly.
Reduced capacity means more tapes are needed to back up the same amount of data.
More tapes means unnecessary cost.
• Slower transfer speeds mean longer backups or backup windows being exceeded, which
can lead to inconvenience and time disruption. In both cases, the hidden cost of even
minor deviations from optimum performance can soon add up to be significant.

Before LTO-6 was launched, HP had already completed over half a million hours of testing
and pulled over 500,000 miles of LTO-6 tape.
