Welcome
Life Lessons
In this month’s Tex and Indi story (pages 6 to 9), the children
couldn’t get their kites up in the air. They were about to go home
when a gust of wind came along. It was a kite-flying day after all.
The original title of this story was “What Do Kites Need?” We
decided “A Kite-Flying Day” would be a better choice. But later,
as I thought about the original title, a new question popped into
my head: “What do kids need?”
We love to hear from you! This story reminded me that children need supportive interactions
eds@highlights.com with adults in order to cope with disappointments and learn patience
and persistence as they try new things. And then, when children are
more secure and skilled, they also need us to pull back and trust them
to fly solo.
I hope this month’s issue will prompt some questions of your own.
Have fun talking about what occurs to both of you as you read the
magazine together!
Sincerely,

Wind
March wind, here it comes
Marching in with all its drums.
See it skip and whip through town,
Tangled branches tumbling down.
March wind, hear it shout:
I’m breathing in and breathing out.
And if you’re patient, then one day
I’ll even blow some spring your way.

Indi had a butterfly kite. Tex had a bee kite. And Tex’s best

the wind will catch

“I think this may
not be the best kite-
flying day,” said
Niko’s mom.
“We might need
to try again on a
windier day.”
8 March 2017
Niko and Indi saw Tex’s kite flying high, so they
quickly tried again.
“Look!” said Niko. “Mine’s flying, too!”
“Mine, too!” said Indi. “Thank you, Mr. Wind!”
“Hooray,” cheered Niko’s mom. “I guess it was
the perfect kite-flying day after all.”

A Family Visit
By Ana Galán Meet Doña Rosa! She lives in Miami and,
Art by Violet Lemay like many of her friends, she speaks Spanish AND English.
12 March 2017
When they were done working in the kitchen, they sat
in the living room. Doña Rosa pulled out her photo album
to show her friends some pictures of her family. “Esta es mi
mamá,” she said, showing a portrait of her mom.
“You look just like her!” said Lucy.
“Este es mi
hermano,” she said,
showing a picture of
her brother.
“Yes, we met him at
the lake,” said Mary.

The doorbell rang. Doña Rosa opened the door and
three baby flamingos zoomed into the house, followed by
their dad.
“¡Hola, tía Rosa!” the little flamingos said.
“And who are these little ones?” said Lucy.
14 March 2017
“Estos son mis sobrinos,” said Doña Rosa,
giving her nephews a big hug.
“They’re so cute!” said Lucy.
“Dinner is going to be fun!” said Mary.
