LESSON 4
Checking for Understanding

1. Reasoning Out

a. In what test situation are the following appropriate? Describe

1) Traditional assessment
 Though traditional assessments have limitations, it can paint a picture of a
student’s learning though may not show the entire picture. It can only show a
portion of it. However, that portion is important. A certain portion of a student’s
learning can help the teacher in identifying the hidden portion. Example, Student
A has been consistently getting low marks on his short story assignments. When a
teacher gave the class an objective assessment that asks them to complete the
steps in writing a short story the teacher finds out that Student A doesn’t know the
right steps in writing a short story. From there she can identify what was lacking
from student’s learning. We still need traditional assessment to measure certain
intellectual levels that authentic assessment cannot measure.
2) Performance assessment
 Authentic Assessments would normally ask students to perform a specific task so
students can apply what they have learned. I’ve learned that authentic assessments
work best if it’s accompanied by a guideline or any form of assessment tool such as
rubrics, checklists, rating scales, etc. Students will be guided accordingly because
they will know what criteria or standards they’ll have to meet. Authentic Assessments
can reveal if students can apply what they have learned from the instructional
process. Through authentic assessments, students can demonstrate the skills they
have mastered in relation to the learning objectives.

b. Go holistic or go analytic? Give three points to protect your stake.

 First, for practical and economic reasons, holistic assessment can be used,
however, for me analytic assessment is better for us to avoid idiosyncratic ratings.
Second, there is a study saying that it is very risky for one classroom teacher to
judge students using a holistic rating system. In terms of impact, analytic
assessment has more scales that provide useful diagnostic information for
placement and/or instruction; more useful for rater training. Third, the more
ratings a person receives, the higher the rating precision, though one obvious
condition is that construct and content validity must come before statistical
reliability. Otherwise, we do not know what the test is measuring.
c. If you were to convince a language teacher skeptical about the need for performance
assessment, what three points would raise? Explain briefly but substantially.

 If I were to convince a language teacher about the need for performance

assessment, I would share with him/her these:
First, performance assessment allows our learners to demonstrate their
learning authentically, and provides reliable information about their content
knowledge.
Second, this type of assessment is ideal for ELL students with limited
English proficiency because, to some extent, any ELL can demonstrate his or her
knowledge using the performance-based approach. The language barrier does not
exclude them from being able to demonstrate their understanding.

d. With the English language program in the K to 12 curriculum in mind, why is

performance assessment an imperative to language learning assessors? Cite at least three
arguments to justify your points.

e. Which among the issues associated with the use of performance assessment are the most
critical to resolve, considering the type of language learners you handle? Select three
issues and explain briefly but substantially.

2. Try them Out

a. With the most recent lesson you taught in one of your language classes, design a suitable
performance task to incorporate the KPUP/S and GRASPS elements. Which facet/s of
understanding is/are integrated in the performance task? Explain your answer.
b. Develop a scoring rubric to assess the students’ performance.

Write an outline of your blog considering the information that we have discussed. You may
use any type of blog: personal, niche, personal brand, corporate, affiliate, artist's blog/vlog,
or guest blog. Use literary devices and catchy phrases to make your outline interesting. You
will be graded based on the following rubric.
