OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT

CLUB

GUIDED BY- PROFESSOR MOHAMMAD DANISH SIR

What is OPEN SOURCE ?

• Open source software (OSS) is a decentralized development model that

distributes source code publicly for open collaboration and peer production
known as “the open source way.”

• This philosophy is based on intellectual freedom and core principles:

transparency, collaboration, delivery, inclusion, and community.
What is FOSS ?

FOSS means Free and Open Source Software. It doesn’t necessarily mean
software is free of cost. It means that source code of the software is open for all
and anyone is free to use, study and modify the code. This principle allows other
people to contribute to the development and improvement of a software like a
community.
Use of Open Source in Businesses

• Lower Software Licensing cost

• No supplier lock-in
• Freedom to make changes to software as you want
• Open Standards that support collaborative development
• Freedom to upgrade software as it suits your business
• Provides better security
Role of Open Source in Cost Reduction….

• Avoids functionality overkilling and bundling

• Avoid unwieldy closed system deployments
• Helps prevents vendor lock-in
• Avoids Proprietary solutions consulting traps
• Benefits from ongoing community support
More on cost reduction…
Cost reduction is a very important factor not only from business point of view
but also in day to day individual usage especially when there is a limited
budget. And when there is such limited budget, one could not afford spending
thousands of rupees only on windows licensing or on license of some other
special use software.
A good example is a organisation which wants to place 100 computers for some
use, and when we’re talking about such large scale small-small expense could
pile up and cost huge amount of money. In this case if, organisation chooses to
install Microsoft Windows in each computer with licensing, it would cost huge, but
if they replace windows with some FOSS operating system like Linux based
Ubuntu, which is almost as much powerful as windows but would cost very less
than windows and even nothing in some cases.
How does FOSS companies/organisations survive in business
world ?
FOSS or Open Source companies/organisations work on their own wonderful
business model to survive.
As most of the FOSS companies provide their softwares for free of cost, so they
have to rely on other things to pay employees salaries and other expenses, and
which company doesn’t want to earn profit.
FOSS uses following business models –
• Open-Core
• Proserv
• Hosting
• Marketplace
