HOW TO CROCHET
WITH BEADS
Crocheting with beads can literally
make a project shine with additional
texture and radiance. Beads that are
brightly colored or have a high-gloss
finish such as crystal, ceramic, acrylic,
metal, pearls and glass beads exude
sparkle and bling, whereas matte
beads in a color matching the yarn or
beads made from organic materials
such as wood, gemstones or shells
bring a subtle richness to a design.
Beaded crochet designs can be
made with embroidery floss, nylon or
hemp cords, cotton crochet threads,
wire and all weights of yarn from lace-
to chunky-weight. However, for clarity,
I will use the word “yarn” to represent
all of these options in the remainder of
this article.
It is important to consider how a
project will be used when selecting
yarns and beads. Items that will be
worn should be made with durable
yarns and beads which can be washed.
Also, the weight of beads must be
contemplated. Bead size options
are determined by the project’s
yarn thickness because the bead’s
center hole must be large enough to
accommodate one or two thicknesses
of the selected yarn.
If you’re new to this concept, try
using a beaded crochet pattern which
already has the correct sizes of yarns
and beads paired together to ensure a
successful result. After making a couple
projects following the instructions,
you will have the experience and

knowledge to confidently add beads the hook end is repeatedly inserted
to your own projects such as baskets, into a container of beads, it quickly
jewelry, handbags, and headbands ... loads beads onto the needle’s shaft
just to name a few! and prevents them from slipping off
when being transferred onto the yarn
Pre-Stringing (see Photo 2)!
If the bead’s hole is large enough,
pre-stringing a bead is just a matter
of inserting the yarn’s end through its
center hole. For beads with smaller
holes, try using a dental floss threader
or collapsible beading needle. You can
also make your own bead threader
using a sewing needle and strong
sewing thread, by inserting a short
length of thread through the needle
and knotting the ends together to Photo 1
form a loop. Insert the yarn end
through the loop, slide a bead on the
needle, over the thread loop and onto
the yarn. Photo 1 shows the dental
floss threader, collapsible beading
needle and sewing needle with thread
methods from left to right. Notice
there are beads hanging on both the
yarn and the yarn tail? Always having
a couple beads on both strands while
stringing keeps the yarn tail from
accidentally falling out of the threader Photo 2
loop, no matter what stringing option

Once beads are pre-strung onto
the yarn, it’s time for the stitching fun
to begin!
Beaded Chain
The beaded chain is a stitch used
frequently in beaded crochet designs.
Photo 3 shows how to work the beaded
chain stitch. With slip knot on the
hook, slide bead up working yarn close
to hook (A). Yarn over and pull loop
through loop on hook (B).

Back Bead Single Crochet
Single crochet stitches are
commonly used in beaded crochet
patterns. The back bead single crochet
(back bead sc) is essentially a single
crochet stitch made with a bead on
the working yarn. Once completed,
the bead lies on opposite side of the
project, the side not facing you as you
work the stitch. It is worked as follows:
Slide bead up working yarn close to
hook, insert hook in indicated stitch,
yarn over (see Photo 4), draw up a loop,
yarn over, draw through both loops on
hook to complete as a single crochet.

working a front bead single crochet

With this stitch, the bead will lie
on the side of the work facing you.
Pre-strung beads can also be
incorporated in many other crochet
stitches, but don’t worry, beaded
crochet projects will have detailed
instructions in the patterns’ special
stitches sections regarding how to
work each specific beaded crochet
stitch featured in the designs.
Bead-as-You-Go
The bead-as-you-go technique
consists of sliding a bead over a yarn
loop in a designated place in a pattern.
A very small steel crochet hook works
well for this purpose. Simply slide the

bead onto the smaller hook, remove
the yarn loop from the working crochet
hook, insert the smaller hook through
the yarn loop (see Photo 7), then pull
the yarn loop up through the bead and
return the beaded loop to the working
hook to continue working the pattern.
If the bead hole is too small for a
steel hook, make a DIY bead threader
using a 6-inch length of .15mm
beading wire! Fold the wire in half
having ends even, place yarn loop
in center of fold between wire ends,
insert both ends through bead and
gently pull on wire ends to bring loop
up through bead (see Photo 8), remove
the wire, return the loop to the crochet
hook and continue following the
instructions.

Make 2.
Cut 6 strands of white, each 6 feet long.
Tie 1 end to a chair or doorknob and start
twisting end until it folds double on

thread about an inch from the lp and cut
the lp. If desired the piece can be braided
instead of twisted. When it’s twisted, it
should measure about 32 inches long.
Starting on 1 side, weave Drawstring over

row down from the top all the way around
and coming back out where the Drawstring
was started. Rep on opposite side of the
Bag, weaving in the same row. Tie a knot in
each drawstring to hold the ends together
and trim to form a tassel.
LINING
Line bag as desired or as follows: Measure
the bag from top to bottom and side to side,
adding an inch each way. Fold fabric and
cut to fit the bag measurements with the
fold on the bottom. Sew each side seam and
finish seam as desired. Do not turn lining.
Insert lining in bag, fitting it all the way to
the bottom and into the corners. Turn the
top of the lining to the WS so the top of the
lining comes to the 4th row down. Remove
lining and press. Hem the turned down area.
Insert back into the bag and stitch the top of
the lining to the 4th row of the bag. C!

This lacy and lovely poncho is a perfect layer for
warm weather. Worked in soft yarn and using a combination of
join-as-you-go motifs, V-stitch mesh and a deep scalloped border,
it is just as fun to crochet as it is to wear.

This project is started with a neckline made
with a stacked rows foundation (alternating
single crochet rows with double crochet
cluster rows) which is joined into a ring.
Then the 4-round yoke is worked on the
flat side of the foundation rows. Motifs are
then crocheted Join-as-You-Go (Jay-Go) to
attach to the yoke and each other. Joining
rounds 2–4 of the motifs are then joined
to each other and the previous rounds of
motifs using Jay-Go for the remaining body
of the poncho. The bottom of the poncho is
completed with a 7-round scalloped border.
