Cast notes
The major characters of the first season of True Blood are introduced among various
intertwining plot lines that surround the Bon Temps bar "Merlotte's". The show's main
protagonist, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), is a telepath and waitress at Merlotte's.E-1 In the
opening episode she saves Merlotte's first vampire customer, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer),
when a local couple attempts to drain him of his blood (vampire blood is known on the show as
a human narcotic: "V" or "V Juice").E-1 Through the relationship that develops between Sookie
and Bill, the viewer progressively learns more about vampire culture and the limitations of
vampire physiology (e.g. susceptibility to silver and the sun).
The major plot of the first season revolves around the murder of several women connected to
Sookie's older brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten).E-1 The women murdered include sexual partner
Maudette Pickens (Danielle Sapia),E-1 on-and-off romantic interest and Merlotte's waitress
Dawn Green (Lynn Collins),E-3 grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) or simply "Gran",E-5 and
girlfriend Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan).E-11 Though the viewer is always aware of Jason's
innocence in their deaths, Detective Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) targets him as the prime
suspect in the investigation he conducts with Sheriff Bud Dearborne (William Sanderson) to
identify their killer.E-1 Jason's best friends and co-workers, Hoyt Fortenberry (Jim Parrack)
and Rene Lenier (Michael Raymond-James) provide him with support despite the turmoil he
encounters.E-1 Rene, who becomes engaged to Merlotte's waitress Arlene Fowler (Carrie
Preston),E-8 is eventually exposed as the Bon Temps murderer and is killed in a final
confrontation with Sookie.E-12
A secondary plot in the first season (that later develops as the primary storyline in the second)
revolves around Sookie's best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley).E-1 In the first episode,
Tara is hired as a bartender at Merlotte's by bar owner, shapeshifter, E-11 and admirer of
Sookie, Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell),E-1 with whom Tara later has a brief relationship.E-3 Tara's
cousin Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis) already works as a cook at Merlotte'sE-1 (in addition to
several other jobs that include road crew, prostitute, and drug dealer) E-3 with Andy's cousin
and Iraq War veteran, Terry (Todd Lowe).E-2 Tara's story is characterized by her relationship
with her alcoholic and abusive mother Lettie Mae (Adina Porter)E-2 and her own inner
"demons".E-10 During the season, Lettie Mae achieves sobriety E-8 but Tara's life begins to spin
out of control. Kicked out of her home and totaling her car in a drunk driving accident, E-10 she's
taken in by "social worker" Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes).E-11 While staying with
Maryann, Tara is introduced to "Eggs" Benedict Talley (Mehcad Brooks), to whom she
becomes attracted.E-11
The final major plotline of the first season revolves around the elements of vampire society that
Sookie and Bill's relationship introduce. While trying to prove her brother's innocence in relation
to Maudette and Dawn's murders, Bill takes Sookie to the vampire bar "Fangtasia" to
investigate. There, Sookie is introduced to Fangtasia's owner and the vampire sheriff of "Area
5" in Louisiana: Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).E-4 Eric is immediately interested in
Sookie and her strange abilities, but his progeny and assistant Pam (Kristin Bauer) is less
impressed.E-4 Eric employs Sookie to find a thief in his bar, but the perpetrator (a vampire
named Longshadow) attempts to kill Sookie when she reveals his identity. Bill stakes and kills
the thief to save her, but has committed a serious crime in killing another vampire. E-8 When Bill
is tried for his crime, his punishment is to transform seventeen-year-old Jessica
Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll) into a vampire to replace the one he destroyed.E-10
A secondary plotline introduced in the first season (which later becomes a main plotline in
Season 2) is that although many humans are attracted to vampires (referred to as "fang
bangers") and flock to establishments like Fangtasia, not all people are accepting of the idea
that vampires should be given rights equal to those afforded the mortals of the True
Blood universe. During the first season, one of the ways in which anti-vampire sentiment is
expressed is through regular televised appearances by the "Fellowship of the Sun", E-2 a Dallas-
based church that in Season 2 becomes headed by the Reverend Steve Newlin (Michael
McMillian)E-3 after his father and family are killed in a strange "accident". E-2
During the second season of True Blood, the influence of Maryann Forrester and the conflict
between vampires and humans is expanded. Most of the cast from the first season returns and
several new main characters are introduced. The same style of interconnected storytelling
used in the first season is repeated, with the foremost plot focusing on Maryann Forrester
being revealed as a maenadE-19 with the power to influence humans.E-15 She begins by
manipulating Tara and Eggs to achieve her goal of summoning her god to earth, E-20 and
eventually takes control of almost the entire population of Bon Temps. E-22
While Maryann begins establishing her hold on Bon Temps, Sookie is recruited by Eric E-15 to
investigate the disappearance of his two-thousand-year-old maker and the Sheriff of Area 9 in
Texas: Godric (Allan Hyde).E-17 While Sookie is absent from Bon Temps, Sam hires Daphne
Landry (Ashley Jones) to join Merlotte's staff.E-13 Daphne (who is revealed to also be a
shapeshifterE-17) begins a romance with Sam,E-16 but is later exposed as working for Maryann. E-
18
Jason also leaves Bon Temps for Dallas to join the Fellowship of the Sun, E-14 which Reverend
Newlin has steered in a new militant direction despite the protestations of his wife Sarah (Anna
Camp).E-13 Godric is discovered in the custody of the Fellowship, E-17 and one of Godric's
lieutenants, Isabel Beaumont (Valerie Cruz),E-17 sends her human boyfriend Hugo (Christopher
Gartin)E-18 to assist Sookie in infiltrating the church. Though Eric's primary interest in Dallas is
finding Godric, he also attempts to place himself between Sookie and Bill. To accomplish this,
he enlists the aid of Bill's maker Lorena (Mariana Klaveno);E-17, who thus becomes a more
prominent contribution to the cast after a brief introduction in the first season. E-5 In the
penultimate episode of the second season, once the conflict in Texas is concluded, the
vampire queen of Louisiana Sophie-Anne Leclerq (Evan Rachel Wood) is introduced.E-23 Both
Bill and Eric visit her in an attempt to find out how to defeat Maryann. E-23 Bill uses the
information provided by Sophie-Anne to devise a plan involving Sam and Sookie, and the three
manage to kill Maryann in the season two finale. Subsequently, Bill takes Sookie out to an
exclusive French restaurant to propose to her. However, before she can give her answer, Bill is
kidnapped.
Season three picks up straight after the events of season two with Sookie on the hunt to track
down Bill and his kidnappers. She turns to Eric for help, who is not interested (seeing this turn
of events as a chance to get Sookie for himself), but he ends up sending werewolf Alcide
Herveaux (Joe Manganiello) for assistance after it is revealed that Bill was taken by V-addicted
werewolves in the employ of the 3000-year-old vampire king of Mississippi, Russell
Edgington (Denis O'Hare). Meanwhile, back in Bon Temps, Lafayette embarks on a
relationship with his mother's care nurse and brujo Jesús Velasquez (Kevin Alejandro) and
learns about his own special powers as a medium, while Sam hires a new waitress at
Merlotte's, Wiccan Holly Cleary (Lauren Bowles).
In season 4, Jessica Tuck (Nan Flanagan) and Janina Gavankar (Luna) became season
regulars. Alexandra Breckenridge (Kate) and Vedette Lim (Naomi) became recurring
actresses.[48]
Joining the cast for season five was Christopher Meloni, who previously starred on another
of HBO's own original series Oz as well as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for 12 years.
Details on his character have yet to be released.[49] Also joining the cast is Scott Foley as
Patrick, Terry's old war buddy,[50] Louis Herthum as JD, Kelly Overton as Rikki, a new werewolf
curious how Marcus died,[51] Carolyn Hennesy is expected to be Rosalyn Harris, a Texas
vampire with twang,[52] and Jacob Hopkins will play child vampire Chancellor Alexander Drew. [53]
For season six, it was announced that Robert Kazinsky would join the principal cast as Ben, a
faerie and a potential love interest for Sookie. He will also help Sookie and Jason discover the
truth about their parents' murders. [54] Robert Patrick, who guest starred in season five as
Jackson Herveaux, was promoted to series regular for season six.[55] Rutger Hauer, who starred
in popular films such as Blade Runner and Batman Begins, was announced as a series regular
playing Macklyn, a character with "strong ties to Sookie and Jason." [56]
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Adina Porter would be returning for the seventh
season as a series regular after being credited as a Special Guest Star since season two. Also
upgraded to regulars are season six guest stars Amelia Rose Blaire as Willa Burrell, Bailey
Noble as Adilyn Bellefleur, Luke Grimes as James and Karolina Wydra as Violet Mazurski.[57]

Personality
"She's as mad as a monkey on a trike and she has been for centuries! "
―Talbot Angelis, on Sophie-Anne, the "Delightful Eccentric"
Sophie-Anne carries herself quite regally, despite her contrasted enlightened
mentality and childish mannerisms. In conversation, she is prone to rambling off on
assorted tangents or abruptly changing the subject of discussion, while even
sometimes it seems she does not notice being addressed at all. Her pastimes such
Yahtzee, lottery scratch tickets, and philosophy also suggest she's extremely self-
indulgent.

Despite this personality quirk, she is shown to be not nearly as malicious or

prejudiced as other monarchs, such as the king of her neighboring state, Russell
Edgington, who outright loathes humans and sees them as inferiors, whilst Sophie-
Anne herself doesn't seem to harbor any such animosity or resentment. In fact,
given that The Queen has no qualms with playing dice games with them, living with
several in her mansion, spending most of her days within her day room, having
some as lovers, and even being the only vampire to remind Bill Compton that
vampires, too, once began as human - all suggest that Sophie-Anne is pretty
tolerant as far as vampires go.
In fact, there is even evidence to suggest that she feels slight envy toward humans,
or at the least that she misses the time when she was one. Her motives for
obtaining Sookie Stackhouse, so she could "feel the sunlight" on her skin again, as
well as having a specific room designed to imitate a daytime beach setting,
complete with dioramas outside the windows, all point to this being likely. It is also
of note that fairy blood is a dissociative intoxicant to vampires, much as V is to
humans. Her mansion is also shown to have a green house on the grounds, which
suggests she does indeed have a love for the outdoors and sunny activities.
When Eric Northman was attempting to coax information out of her regarding
Sookie's origin via draining Hadley Hale, her human lover, the sight visibly pained
her greatly, though she remained vigilant in her decision to not reveal the secret,
thus proving that she is strong enough in character to sacrifice whatever or
whomever she may love for the sake of her ultimate ambitions.
Though she generally displays the persona of an aloof starlet, she also displays
signs of an extremely calculating mind beneath the surface, if not just in sheer
brilliance in the supernatural world, such as identifying what traits make someone a
fairy or being able to surmise how one would kill an unstoppable supernatural
immortal creature like a Maenad, but also in how she strategically placed Bill in
Sookie's life so as to lure Sookie's fairy blood to her.
Biography
Background
Sophie-Anne originally comes from Northern France. Her name used to be Judith.
Her maker saved her from a neighbor who was about to sell her for food. However,
he soon forced her into prostitution. This lasted a few years. But eventually some
humans staked him and dumped his body in the Seine therefore freeing Sophie-
Anne. Sophie-Anne, always resourceful went on with her life and soon found an
orphan boy named Andre-Paul roaming in the woods. He had also been forced into
prostitution. She rescued him and made him a vampire and a companion. He
became her personal bodyguard for two centuries.

Season 2
"Frenzy"

Sophie-Anne's mansion in Louisiana.

Sophie-Anne is first seen feeding off Sookie's cousin Hadley. She talks about how
disappointed she is in many different things going on in the world and in her life.
However, this does not seem to bother her that much; distracting herself with a
1920s issue of Vogue magazine, as well as the "day-room" (including a full
diorama of a beach scene complete with the sounds of birds chirping and artificial
sunlight) she has had recently built. She has several humans she treats with
constantly-varying respect, including Hadley Hale, her main human companion and
lover.

When Bill Compton arrives to ask the Queen about how to defeat a Maenad, she
shows a great deal of knowledge about them despite not reading up on them
recently. She also makes Bill reluctantly spend the entire day lounging with her
before she will tell him what she knows. Sophie-Anne orders Eric Northman to
get Lafayette Reynolds to sell "V". This order was surprising coming from the
Queen herself. The reason for this remains unknown until season 3. ("Frenzy")
Season 3
"Bad Blood"

Sophie-Anne with the Magister and Eric.

At the start of Season 3, Sophie-Anne is seen visiting Eric at Fangtasia,
alongside The Magister. They both inform Eric that they suspect a vampire in Her
Majesty's kingdom is selling "V" to the humans. Although he suspects it, the
Magister is unaware that it is actually the Queen herself that is supplying the V,
and Eric who is trafficking it. After The Magister leaves, the Queen tells Eric of her
financial woes and her troubles with the IRS, and brutally demands that he move
the blood as soon as possible, so that she can get the money. ("Bad Blood")
"I Got a Right to Sing the Blues"

Childish stubbornness at King Russell's proposal of marriage.

A few days later she is found by Russell and Eric having bought lottery scratch
cards by the hundreds in an attempt to pay off her debt to the IRS.
Russell offers to marry her and absolve her debts. After a little physical coercion
from Eric, she agrees to the proposal.

Shortly after accepting Eric picks her up to restrain her so she can't escape. As she
is being carried away Sophie-Anne starts to scream for her human lover. She
shouts childishly, "Hadley. I want my Hadley... Hadley!". ("I Got a Right to Sing the
Blues")
"Hitting the Ground"
She is quickly caged by Eric within her day room, who then brings Hadley in for the
queen. Eric threatens the Queen that unless she tells him why she is interested in
Sookie Stackhouse, he will drain Hadley of all her blood. The queen denies
knowing anything about Sookie and Eric proceeds to violently feed on Hadley until
the girl gives in and tells him what he wants to know. The same night Sophie-Anne
accompanies Eric and Russell to Fangtasia where Eric reveals to the Magister that
he sold "V" for the queen. Before the Magister can arrest her, Russell announces
that he will marry Sophie and pay all her debts to the IRS. Russell then tortures
Magister until he performs the marriage ceremony and she watches as the
Magister is beheaded. ("Hitting the Ground")
"Everything Is Broken"
After she is married, she moves into Russell's mansion, along with Hadley. She
can be heard complaining that her room is a "fucking closet," as well as not
knowing what to do with her large exotic bird collection.

Her whereabouts for some time after this point are unknown, as she is not found in
Russell's mansion when human authorities seize it whilst searching for him after
his attack on TBBN. Via Nan Flanagan, The Authority considers Queen Sophie-
Anne's disappearance as evidence supporting Eric Northman's case, and as such
crucial in their decision to allow him to live and to kill Russell. ("Everything Is Broken")
"Evil is Going On"

Sophie-Anne and Bill duel

Upon Russell's defeat, Sophie-Anne appears at Bill Compton's residence at his
request, dressed in funeral attire, calling herself a widow (implying the Authority did
indeed see fit to acknowledge her marriage to Russell, thus making her the new
vampire monarch of Mississippi as well.) She is visibly unhappy with Bill's recent
defection, but is quick to forget it in lieu of her eagerness for finding a true Fae and
being able to walk in the sun. The invite is a ploy, however, as Bill challenges her
to a duel to the death. She seems undaunted, revealing that she is over twice his
age, but Bill brokenly replies he has nothing left to live for. ("Evil is Going On")
Season 4
"You Smell Like Dinner"
Sophie-Anne's last words to Bill: "You fucking traitor" (Click for Animation)
In a flashback by Bill it is revealed that his fight with Sophie-Anne was a setup.
Although Sophie-Anne easily overpowered Bill, AVL snipers stormed the Compton
home and quickly took aim at Sophie-Anne's heart. After exchanging bitter words,
Bill gave the command, and the snipers shot. Upon impact, Sophie-Anne instantly
burst into a fine red mist, finally ending her reign. ("You Smell Like Dinner")
Sophie-Anne appears in a brief flashback when Sookie breaks Antonia's curse
and Eric recovers his memory.
Later, Nan Flanagan mentions that Bill's indecisive leadership actually makes her
long for the days when Sophie-Anne was Queen.
Powers and Abilities
Sophie-Anne has the common powers of a vampire: Superhuman strength, speed,
and healing. She has also been shown capable of levitation and, quite possibly,
flying to some extent. Because of her age, she is stronger and faster than younger
vampires such as Bill, Pam and Lorena, though she is far weaker than older
vampires such as Nan Flanagan, Eric Northman and Russell Edgington. It's
possible that she lacks self-control because she usually feeds on her court
entertainers (notably Hadley and Lutis) and forbids her subjects to never feed from
Sookie, and might hate the taste of Tru Blood.

Her weaknesses include a stake to the heart, silver and fire. Sunlight will rapidly kill
a vampire of her age. Despite her childish manners, she appears to be very
intelligent and has a vast knowledge of history, philosophy and the supernatural
world. Eric Northman himself, despite being much older than her, is shown to seek
the Queen's advice regarding supernatural creatures like Maenads and, later, was
correct in presuming that Sophie-Anne was the sole person privy to Sookie's
precise supernatural origin as a fairy.
