2. Discuss the sense of taste

The gustatory system or sense of taste is the sensory system that is partially responsible for the perception of taste
(flavor). Taste is the perception produced or stimulated when a substance in the mouth reacts chemically with taste
receptor cells located on taste buds in the oral cavity, mostly on the tongue. The taste buds are located in the walls and
grooves of the papillae. Adults have between 2,000 and 4,000 taste buds in total. The sensory cells in the taste buds are
renewed once a week. Taste has a number of functions: Taste signals the nutritional qualities of the food we are about
to eat. Taste helps us detect toxins in our foods to keep us safe. Taste links our external environment to our internal
needs (hunger and thirst).
