ENGAGE

Photoshop is generally the last step on a photo’s journey. You took your shots
and now you need to get them where they need to be in Adobe Photoshop. The
post-processing stage is an integral part of digital photography. Even when
you’ve taken a picture that essentially looks perfect to you, there’s always room
for a little photo editing magic to take it to the next level. In this course
material, you will learn Photoshop editing for beginners. But before you start
and from your point of view what are the steps of a photo editing?

1. Crop and straighten

2. Improve lighting and color
3. Remove unwanted content
4. Add creative effects
5. Sharpen and save

LEARNING CHECK: Draw the crop tool.

LEARNING CHECK:

1. Steps on how to use Spot Healing Brush Tool.

 Select the Spot Healing Brush Tool from the Toolbox.
 Choose your desired brush size using the drop-down menu in the upper right corner.
 Choose Type: Content-Aware or Proximity Match.
 Click on the spot you want to fix.
2. Steps on how to sharpen an image.
 Reduce the noise in your image (click on Filter on the Menu Bar, click Noise, then
select Reduce Noise).
 Create a new layer of the same image (select Layer on the Menu Bar and click
Duplicate Layer) or make a selection from the image (click Select on the Menu Bar,
click on Edit in Quick Mask Mode, and use the Brush Tool to paint over the part of
you want to select).
 Go to Filter, Sharpen, and select any of the Sharpening tools to apply a sharpening

ASSESMENT TASK 2: ENUMERATION
1. Enumerate the different tools needed on how to correct the exposure for your image
and their functions.

 Brightness/Contrast
Brightness increases the overall lightness of the image—for example, making dark
colors lighter and light colors whiter—while contrast adjusts the difference between
the darkest and lightest colors.
 Levels
a tool in Photoshop and other image editing programs which can move and stretch
the brightness levels of an image histogram. It has the power to adjust brightness,
contrast, and tonal range by specifying the location of complete black, complete
white, and midtones in a histogram.
 Curves
There are two ways to use curves in Photoshop. One way of doing it is, by going to
the menu Image->Adjustments->Curves. The second and the most effective way is to
use curves as an adjustment layer.
 Exposure
Exposure is how light or dark an image appears. If an image is too dark, it's
underexposed. If it's too light, it's overexposed. You can select Auto adjust in the
exposure tool and PicMonkey will automatically adjust your photo's brightness,
highlights, shadows, and contrast.
 shadows/highlights
is one method for correcting photos with dark or dull images due to strong
backlighting or correcting subjects that have been slightly washed out. The
adjustment can also be used for brightening areas of shadow in an otherwise well-lit
image.
 HDR Toning
Adjustment which allows you to apply High Dynamic Range effects to a single image.
By changing an 8 bit-per-channel (bpc) image to 32 bpc, you will have increased
luminance levels and dynamic range. Therefore, this effect can really make your
images pop.

 Go to Filter, Sharpen, and select any of the Sharpening tools to apply a sharpening
filter.
 Repeat if necessary.
IMPORTANCE: There are three main reasons to sharpen your image: to overcome
blurring introduced by camera equipment, to draw attention to certain areas and to
increase legibility. RAW files from any modern camera are always slightly unsharp. It
makes your subjects POP. Sharpening programs/filters really only do one thing. They
make edges appear more defined by darkening the darker pixels and brightening the
brighter pixels. This creates a crisp edge between light and dark portions of the
image, giving it more contrast.
3. How to use Content-Aware Fill?
 First, draw a selection around an area or object that you want to replace.
 Make sure to create the selection as close to your subject as possible but leaving
enough space to give Photoshop material to work with.
 Open the Content-Aware Fill taskspace (Edit > Content-Aware Fill).
 Resize the sampling area and your initial selection using the Sampling Brush Tool
and the Lasso Tool respectively.
 Tweak the Fill Settings to improve your output.
 Finalize your output by creating a new layer.

4. Healing Brush Tool

The Healing Brush tool allows you to fix image imperfections such as scratches,
blemishes, etc. By sampling the surrounding area or using a predefined pattern you can
blend the imperfections into the rest of the image. The healing brush tool is located in
the Photoshop Toolbox, on the left side.

ASSESMENT TASK 3: ESSAY

1. What is the purpose of removing unwanted spots?

The impact of a photo can easily be spoiled by an unwanted object in the frame. In the
modern world, it’s often difficult to photograph even a remote landscape without
capturing a fence, power lines, satellite dishes, or litter—mundane clutter that can
reduce the drama of an otherwise perfect shot. Photoshop Elements offers several tools
to help you improve an image by getting rid of extraneous detail. As you’ve seen, the
Recompose tool lets you remove areas as you scale a photo. In this set of exercises
you’ll use the Spot Healing Brush tool to remove an object without altering the overall
composition.
2. In your own opinion, how important it is to use Healing Brush Tool?
The Healing Brush and Patch tools allow you fix imperfections, like scratches, wrinkles,
dust spots, etc., causing them to disappear into the surrounding image. They work very
much like the cloning tools. You sample pixels in one are of an image, then paint over
another area replacing it with the sampled pixels. Also it allows you to fix image
imperfections such as scratches, blemishes, etc. By sampling the surrounding area or
using a predefined pattern you can blend the imperfections into the rest of the image.
The healing brush tool is located in the Photoshop Toolbox, on the left side.
3. What is the difference between having an edited and non-edited images?
These days we can’t believe everything we see online, especially on social media. The
internet is filled with many “photoshopped” images that are circulated either to have
fun or sometimes to misguide people. Ever since its birth, Photoshop has been a quick
and easy way to tweak photos and lately, it has led to some fake news circulating
around the globe. However, there are now a range of tools and techniques that make it
easy to find out if the image is manipulated. Here we are discussing six ways to tell if an
image has been photoshopped or edited. Photo editing is the act of making color and
exposure adjustments to enhance a photo. On the other hand, Photo Manipulation
alters the original image by adding new elements, changing the look of objects, and
other “manipulative” adjustments. Images that are raw or unedited are images with
little to no post work or simply as they were shot in camera. Almost every photographer
edits their photo to some degree. Color correction, brightness, contrast, or other
elements are a few examples. Editing can add style or artistic flare.
