Prof. Viswanathan Nurni Neelakantan

Professor & In-Charge, Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology, Department of
IoT & Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, IIT - Bombay

Networks Prof. Viswanathan is presently heading the Centre of Excellence in Steel
Technology, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science
in Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay. He obtained his M.E and Ph.D in
Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.
Prof. Viswanathan is a Visiting Professor to The Royal Institute of Technology,
Sweden; Lulea University, Sweden; and Abo Academy, Finland. He also served
AI & ML, as LKAB Chair Professor (2011-2013) at Lulea University of Technology, Sweden.
Big data Prof. Viswanathan is an outstanding teacher and based on student feedback,
analytics IIT Bombay honoured him on 4 occasions with the award “Excellence in
Teaching”. Besides these honours, some of his recent awards include the
Metallurgist of the Year - 2019 award by Ministry of Steel, Educator of the Year –
2020 by Indian Institute of Metals. For his role in managing the campus
essential supply during the lockdown period, IIT Bombay honoured him with
COVID Warrier award.
Prof. Viswanthan has developed several models for the industry. Prominent
Energy & among them are (a) BlaSIM, - a Blast Furnace Simulation tool for Tata steel, (b)
Environment Single Pellet Induration Model (SPIM) for LKAB, Sweden and (c) Simulation tool
for Bell Annealing for Theis Precision Steel India Limited.
He is an advisory board member for Steel Research International, Transactions
of Indian Institute of Metals, and is a reviewer for international journals like
Metallurgical & Materials Transactions, Computational Materials Science,
Journal of Chemical Reaction Engineering, etc.

Innovation,
Process modelling & simulation plays an important role in
Entrepreneurship and
understanding processes, modifying them towards better
Scholarship
performance, operation & control of processes and exploring
newer possibilities. Often for complex processes, researchers
focus on a particular aspect of the system through carefully
designed experimentation. Models enable researchers to
design experiments more systematically towards
quantification. When it comes to large metallurgical processes,
LS-SERIES models enable systematic integration of various subprocesses
to simulate the system as a whole. In this talk a general
introduction to modelling methodology and simulation will be
given. This will be followed by some case studies from iron and
steel making processes to illustrate these points.
