2. INTRODUCTION

Have you ever imagined a world without art? What would be our daily
experiences without art in our lives? It would be certainly unpleasant. Art is
something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that
expresses important ideas or feelings. The product of arts is created by artists such

as; paintings, sculptures, architecture and many more. It is intended to create
beautiful creation and to express important ideas or feelings.

Fortunately, Philippines is no stranger to art! We embrace it like it is a part


of our daily life. The Philippine art developed through different era in our history.
The most dominant are; Pre-colonial period, Spanish colonial period, American
Colonial, Post war or Modern Period and Contemporary period.

Our ancestor’s arts are something that we can be proud of. They are very rich
and colorful! They depict our ancestor’s ethnic origin and revolved around Animism
and Islam. Carving, pottery, weaving and physical ornaments are integral part of the
Philippine indigenous art. Here are some of the masterpieces that our forefathers
have made.

Spanish colonial period occurred from 1565 to 1898. It can be described as
religious because most of its products centered on Catholicism. After three centuries
of colonization, Spanish art is seen all throughout the country. In our church,
literature, and even inside our home. Examples of these are;

From 1898 to1940’s comes the American period. With their arrival, means
additional richness in our culture and art. It is very noticeable in some of the
buildings and parks that they have designed and made. Some models of American
influence in architecture are;

Legislative Building (National Art Gallery)

The Post war/ Modern period started during 1945 to 1969. It produces some
of the most outstanding work of arts by Filipinos. Some of which are;

The Contemporary period begun in 1970. Contemporary Art refers to the


recent and current practice of art ranging from 1970’s up to the present. It is said to
mirror the society and culture of the present times. It utilizes combination of different
methods, materials, & ideas that transcend the traditional way of art making.

Jumbled Letters

Rearrange the jumbled letters to find out the various contemporary art forms in the
Philippines. Use the clue for each word. These words will be discussed further on
the next lesson.

9. RBAODCSAT RATS- An art and technique of communicating to the people using
technology such as; radio, television and social media. _________________
10. TETRYPO- an art or craft of making objects that are made out of clay usually
by hand and then baked at high temperatures. ________________

ACTIVITY NO.3

Create your own!

Using an old printed material in your home, cut off pictures of at least three
contemporary art forms. Be creative as possible to form an art shape or figure from
the clippings.
