Background Information for Learners


Verbs are words that show actions. It tells what someone or something does like sing, dance,
read and write. It is also known as “action words”.
Example: The girl dances in the contest.

Verb has three tenses or forms. Past tense, Present tense and Future tense. Past tense of the
verb refers to action that happened in the past. Time expressions like yesterday, last week, last
month, long time ago and once upon a time are used to tell past time. How are we going to form
the past tense of the verb? For regular verbs, we add –d or –ed to the simple form or base form of
the verb to tell the past form. Example: walk-walked play-played live-lived

Use simple verbs (past, present, future) in sentences

Directions/ Instructions
The children walked to school together last Monday. We add –ed to the verb walk because
the action happened last Monday. There are times when there are changes in the spelling of the
word. The following rules will help you. Regular verbs of one syllable that end in a consonant
with a vowel before it, form their past tense by doubling the consonant before adding –ed.
