Introduction
This document provides detailed procedures for the installation and configuration of
the LAN option on a MAC 5500, MAC 3500, MAC 1600, or MAC 800 resting ECG
analysis system to enable communication with the MUSE Cardiology Information
System over a LAN.
NOTE
Printing a test from the MUSE system to a MAC system that is defined as a
device in MUSE setup is NOT supported by the LAN option.
Typographical Conventions
The following conventions are used in this manual.
[Key1] + [Key2] Indicates a keyboard operation. A plus sign (+) between the names of
two keys indicates that you must press and hold the first key while
pressing the second key once.
For example, “Press Ctrl + Esc” means to press and hold down the
Ctrl key while pressing the Esc key.
Enter Indicates you must press the “Enter” or “Return” key on the keyboard.
Do not type “enter”.
[Space] Indicates that the spacebar must be pressed when typing literal strings,
such as command lines. Brackets identify the string as a key instead of
text to be typed.

Troubleshooting
Always verify the above requirements, as well as connectors and power to the
devices before undertaking any in-depth network troubleshooting. Listed below are
some possible symptoms with suggested resolutions.
Troubleshooting Table
Communication between Hardware switch ports used to MAC systems with the LAN communication option are set to
MAC and MUSE systems connect the MAC system to the “AUTONEGOTIATE” (AUTO) as the network connection mode.
is unreliable with delays or network are set to 100/FULL When a device set to AUTO connects to a hardware switch port that
dropouts (even with a Duplex. has a “Fixed” setting it will detect the speed correctly but the duplex
good physical network mode will default to HALF. Network Administrators often have
connection). hardware switch ports set to 100/FULL in an attempt to avoid device
“mismatch” errors. When two interfaces are connected to each other
with one set to AUTO and one set to full duplex mode, a duplex
mismatch results because the autonegotiation process fails and half
duplex is assumed - the interface in full duplex mode (the switch)
transmits and receives at the same time. If the interface in half duplex
mode (the cart) is transmitting at the same time and is not ready to
receive a packet, it signals a clash, and tranmissions are halted for
amounts of time based on backoff (random wait times) algorithms.
When both packets start trying to transmit again they interfere again
and the backoff strategy may result in a longer wait time before
attempting to transmit again. The result for a MAC5500 cart
attempting to send data will be a very slow or unresponsive network
connection. Data transmission becomes very unreliable.
Different time out values used When a MAC 5000 system is disconnected, MUSE Serial IP will time
by MUSE Serial IP and the out within a relatively short period of time, see a broken connection,
communication card on the MAC close it, and try to re-establish it. However, the communication card
5500 system. on the cart network will reject an new requests from MUSE to open
the connection, within the 3-minute time out period, since it still
recognizes the original connection. This is due to the design of the
communication card used in the cart. It does not affect wireless
connections that use a separate client bridge (instead of the
communication card) to establish MUSE connectivity.
Solution: To avoid the problem related to the longer time out used by
the communication card on the cart, the user should power-off the cart
before disconnecting it from the network and then reconnect to the
(Continued) network before powering it up again. This closes any open connection
and renews the connection when the cart is powered up again.
(Continued COM port configured incorrectly Another factor that may affect the communication between the cart
from previous page) in Serial IP on MUSE and MUSE is the setup of Serial IP on the MUSE system.
If the Restore Failed Connection check box is not checked for the
COM Port Options in Serial IP, MUSE will not re-establish the
connection once it fails.
Communication between

good physical network
connection).
MAC system unable to Improper information provided If configurations match on both sides, you should verify the
connect to the MUSE by hospital IT Dept. information provided by the hospital IT department to make sure that it
system is accurate. Here are some possible factors that could affect
communications:
1. Improper Gateway Address - would not allow proper routing.
2. Improper Subnet Mask information - would not allow enough IP
Addresses or could conflict with routing.
3. Duplicate IP Address - would cause a conflict if another device on
the network has the same address.
Although most of these issues should be addressed during the pre-
installation consultation that we provide to the customer, please be
aware that new issues can arise during the installation because of
infrastructure or personnel changes that have taken place.
Incorrect configuration. 1. Verify whether or not the setup was previously working.
2. Check the configuration based on the configuration basics above.
Important factors include the following:
Serial Communication: COM Port, Baud Rate, Stop Bits, etc.
Networking: IP Address and Listening Port.
Modem Setup: Modem number matching CSI Service, CSI
Service properly installed, Modem properly configured.
If the setup was not previously working, you will need to go through
the entire setup procedure to configure both sides.
The modem service is not Verify that the service(s) is listed as Started in the services applet on

properly.
If the service is not started, start the service or restart CV_SCM. If the
service is started, but appears to not be functioning, it may be
necessary to restart the service.
Note: Individual modem services can only be stopped and started
individually on MUSE 5X systems by using the CVSCTRL utility,
available from the Jupiter OLC. Modem services can also be stopped
and restarted by stopping and starting the CV_SCM service.
There is a network problem 1. Verify LAN link and activity status by “pinging” the IP Address of the

file server. 2. Test connectivity from the MUSE to the cart by “pinging” the IP
Address of the cart from the file server.
3. Verify whether or not any cart can communicate with the MUSE.
If other carts can transmit, the problem may be with the modem
service that is associated with the non-working cart. Follow the
steps in the above Possible Cause for the modem service not
running or not functioning properly.
