Shape Poetry
Shape poetry is poetry written in a
shape that relates to what the
poem is about or its topic.

For example: A poem about a


ball, written around the ball in a
circle.

A ball bounces, jumps, and moves and is


so much fun to play with.

5 Senses Poetry
5 senses poetry is poetry about what
we see, hear, smell, touch, and taste.
Each line describes the topic.

For example: A poem about a holiday, where you describe


what you see, hear, small, touch, and taste at this time.
I love Halloween!
I see big, orange pumpkins.
I hear ghosts calling “Boo!”
I smell fireworks burning.
I touch the sticky spider web.
I taste the yummy candy.
I love Halloween!

Acrostic Poetry
Acrostic poetry is poetry where the first
letter of each line spells out a
word or a message. It is written
vertically down the page.

For example: A poem about an animal, where each


line describes the animal and its characteristics.

Oviparous birds lay eggs


Waiting patiently for their prey
Lurking in a tree up high
Swoops down in the midnight sky

Rhyming Poetry
Couplet poetry are two line poems where the
last words in each line rhyme. Quatrain poetry
are four line poems where the rhyme takes the
pattern AABB or ABAB.

For example: A rhyming poem about anything in our


world. These poems can be silly!
I used the broom
To clean all around the room A crab walked on the sand
Then climbed up onto my hand
He gave me a tickle and pinch
Which made me wiggle and flinch

Cinquain Poetry
Cinquain poetry is poetry written in five lines about a topic.
Line 1: 1 word (noun/topic)
Line 2: 2 words to describe (adjectives)
Line 3: 3 words that express the action (verbs)
Line 4: 4 words about what happened (feelings)
Line 5: a synonym for the title or same word

For example: A non-rhyming poem about the weather


would take this pattern.
Sunshine
Bright, hot
In the sky
Warms up the Earth

Diamante Poetry
Diamante poetry is non-rhyming poetry written in seven
lines and is shaped like a diamond.

Limerick Poetry
Limerick poetry is humorous poetry
written in five lines. The last words of
lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme with each other,
as well as lines 3 and 4.

For example: A funny, rhyming poem about an elf.

There once was an elf named Ed


Who always wore green and red,
But one day he came,
Across an elf with the same name,
And then he renamed him Fred

Autobiography Poetry
Autobiography poetry is poetry
written about yourself. It can follow
a template or be free verse, meaning
it can take any form you wish.

For example: These are two examples of “Bio” poems, using


different templates suitable for different age groups.
