Social pressure seems to be unavoidable and causes immense stress to students. In your
opinion, what social pressure do you face as a university student?

Lately, the issue of social pressure experienced by university students is of great

concern and it is not a new thing. Pursuing higher education is very stressful for students as
they must go through the process of adapting to a new social environment. Social pressures are
the combined pressures that are around you during everyday life. In my viewpoint, social
pressures that I face as a university student are peer pressure, academic pressure, and
organizational pressure.

Peer pressure occurs when we feel compelled to do something we are not used to do in
order to be liked, to be able to adapt in a group as well as avoiding being abandoned or ridiculed.
For example, I'm not used to going out until late at night. I know it's dangerous and not good
for women especially without parents’ permission, but they are like “don't worry about it,
nothing’s going to happen to you. I do it all the time”, and they are constantly pressuring me
to. I begin to feel like well, if I do not do it, they won't want to hang out with me. I was also
never accepted to be friends during my first semester at university and this thing made me feel
lonely and a little bit depressed.

Next, social pressure that I face at university is academic pressure, one of the most
notorious pressures that students face daily. For me, academic pressure is an unpleasant
situation as a result of the demands that must be met by university students that trigger concerns
in academic achievement. Academic pressure occurs when I must compete with peers to get
good results, too many assignments given by the lecturer and parental expectations. This makes
me feel pressure to always do the best which is hard because sometimes I get tired of studying
all the time.

Besides that, I was also involved with an association at the university that makes me
feel organizational pressure. Being a subordinate in an organization, there are a lot of things to
do especially when a program is to be run. Mistakes in handling the program cause us to be
scolded by the leaders in the organization and this will put pressure to keep the program running
smoothly.

In a nutshell, life at university is a place to learn and practice socialization skills. We

need to wisely handle the social pressures around us.
