1. Identification and marking: (IEC61643-11, Section 7.1.1/7.1.2/8.2)
The following Identifications and markings are permanently attached to the body of the SPD,

a) Company name or logo and Model No.

g) Identification of terminals

Markings are not been placed or removable, indelible and legible by rubbing the makings by hand for 15s with a piece of cotton
soaked with water and again for 15s with a piece of cotton soaked with aliphatic solvent hexane.
Pass criteria
After test, the marking should be easily legible.

Conclusion: pass

2.Terminals and connections: (IEC61643-11, Section 7.3.2/7.3.3/8.4.2)

The cross-section of connection wire: 4~25mm2。


Nominal diameter of thread: 5mm
Applied torques : 0.8Nm
Conductor wired in test: 16mm2
Pulling force: 90N

Test A: The screws are tightened and loosened five times.


Pass criteria:
During the test, the screwed connections shall not work loose and there shall be no damage, such as breakage of screws or
damage to the head slots, threads, washers or stirrups, that will impair the further use of the SPD. The Enclosure and covers
shall not be damaged.
Result:
The screwed connections did not work loose, and no any damage.
Conclusion: Pass.

Test B: Pulling test


The terminal screws are tightened with torque equal to 2/3 of the value (0.8Nm), and conductor is subjected to a pull of 90N,
the pull is applied without jerks, for 1 min, in the direction of the axes of conductor space.
Pass criteria:
During the test, the conductor shall not move noticeably in the terminal.
Result:
No move was observed.

Conclusion: Pass.

3.Residual current (IEC61643-11, Section 7.2.2/8.3.2)

The SPD was connected as for normal use, and voltage shall be adjusted to the reference test voltage of Uref.
To DS120/320-(V+T)-S, the Uref is 255 Vac
Measure the residual current flowing through the PE terminal.

4. Voltage protection level Up: (IEC61643-11, Section 7.2.3,8.3.3)

Then testing SPDs to class II, 8/20 current impulses with a sequence of crest values of approximately 0,1; 0,2; 0,5; 1,0 times In
shall be applied. If the SPD contains only voltage-limiting components, this test needs only to be performed at crest values of
Iimp for test class I or In for test class II.
To voltage switching SPD, The 1,2/50 voltage impulse is used. The generator voltage is set to an open circuit output voltage of 6
kV.

Pass criteria
 The highest voltage value shall not exceed the value declared by the manufacturer
 NOTE: The residual voltage is the highest crest value measured during surge current flow. Any high frequency disturbances
and spikes before and during current flow caused by specific generator design, like crowbar generators, are disregarded
 Voltage and current records and visual inspection shall show no indication of puncture or flashover.
 No visible damage shall occur during the test.

Result:
The maximum residual voltage measured is at In: 60kA 8/20μs.

5. Operating duty test: (IEC61643-11, Section 7.2.4, 8.3.4)

Three group of five impulse of In 8/20 current impulse with positive polarity, and SPDs are energized at Uc.
Each impulse shall be synchronized to power frequency. Starting from 0o the synchronization angle shall be increased in steps of
(30+/-5) intervals. After the last group of impulses and the 1min period the SPD remains applied to Uc for another 15min to
check for stability.
The SPD is energized at Uc by means of a voltage source having a nominal current capability of at least 5A. This test is carried
out with current impulses in steps up to Ipeak for SPDs tested.

Pass criteria
 Thermal stability shall be achieved.
 Voltage and current records and visual inspection shall no indication of puncture or flashover.
 No visible damage shall occur.
 Values for measured limiting voltage after the test shall be low or equal to Up.
 Internal and external disconnectors shall be in work order after test.

6.Thermal Stability Test(IEC61643-11,Section 7.2.5.2/8.3.5.2)

The SPDs connect to a power frequency source. And the current is set to a constant value.
To first sample, the test is started at a value of 2mA rms or at Uc. This value of current is then increased in steps of either 2mA
or 5% of the previously adjusted test current, whichever is greater. Each step is maintained until thermal equilibrium is
reached( variation of temperature at the hottest spot less than 2K within 10min).
For the other samples the start point shall be changed from 2mA to a current corresponding to 5 steps below the current value at
which the first sample disconnected .

Pass criteria
 The surface temperature rise of indoor SPDs shall not exceed 120K during and after test.
 Five min after disconnection of all non-linear components under test the surface temperature rise shall not exceed 80K.

7. TOV Test (IEC61643-11, Section 7.2.8.1/8.3.8.1)

The SPD shall be connect to a power source for UT (0,-5%) for a duration tT (+5%,0).
And Immediately following the application of Uref (0,-5%) for a duration 15min.

Pass criterial
1. TOV failure mode
 During the test, the tissue paper shall not catch fire.
 SPDs with IP degree equal to, or greater than, IP20 shall not have live parts accessible with a standardize test finger applied
with a force of 5N.
 If internal disconnection occurs during the test, there shall be clear evidence of effective disconnection of the corresponding
protective components.

2. TOV withstand mode


 During the test, the tissue paper shall not catch fire.
 SPDs with IP degree equal to, or greater than, IP20 shall not have live parts accessible with a standardize test finger applied
with a force of 5N.
 Thermal stability shall be achieved.
 Values of measured limiting voltage after test shall be below or equal to Up

8.Heat resistance (IEC61643-11, Section7.4.2/8.5.2)


The SPD is kept in a heat cabinet at a temperature of 100℃ +/-2K for the duration of 1hr.
Pass criteria
 Any sealing compound(including potting) used in the internal assembly shall not move to such extent as to create a problem
for the functionality of SPD.
 SPDs with IP degree equal to, or greater than, IP20 shall not have live parts accessible with a standardize test finger applied
with a force of 5N.
 No visible damage shall occur during the test.

Result:
After test, three samples show:
No abnormal was found, no sealing compound flow out. And IP is OK

Conclusion: Pass

9.Temperature withstand(IEC61643-11,Section 7.2.5/8.3.5.1)


The SPD is kept in a heated cabinet at an ambient temperature of 80℃ +/-5K for 24 h.
Pass criteria
 No visible damage shall occur during test.
 Internal disconnectors shall not operate during the test and shall be in working order after test.

Result:
After test, three samples show:
No abnormal was found, internal disconnectors did not operate.

Conclusion: Pass

10.Resistance to abnormal heat/fire (Glow-wire test) (IEC61643-11,Section7.4.3/8.5.4)


Glow wire test is performed at temperature 850℃ +/-15K, 30 s. for external parts of SPDs made of insulating material.
Pass criteria
 There is no visible flame and no sustained glowing, or if
 Flamed and glowing parts on the sample extinguish thermselve with 30 s after the removal of the glow-wire.

Result:
During the test, three samples show no visible flame and sustained glowing.

Conclusion: Pass
