Neurotransmitter Transporters in Health and Disease

Guest Editors: Message from the Guest Editors
Dr. Sonja Sucic Dear Colleagues,
sonja.sucic@meduniwien.ac.at
Neurotransmitter transporters (NTTs) belong to the
Dr. Lynette C. Daws superfamily of solute carrier (SLC) membrane transporters.
daws@uthscsa.edu
These versatile proteins play a central role in controlling
Dr. Ameya Sanjay Kasture neurotransmission, by mediating the rapid reuptake of

and glial cells. Over the last decade, ample reports in the

literature have directly linked genetic mutations in NTTs to

diseases including Parkinson´s/dystonia, ataxia, epilepsy,
mental and intellectual disability, and disorders of the
auditory, visual, and muscular systems. Some of these NTT

binding, and/or translocation of endogenous substrates. In
this Special Issue, we place particular emphasis on the
molecular basis of NTTs in disease, from the atomic level
to studies in animal models, and recent discoveries
shedding light on novel targets that may incite the
development of effective therapeutic strategies.
