PARABOLIC CURVE

Name : Weather :
Group No. : Place :
Designation : Time, Start :
Instructor : End :

I. Objectives

a. To investigate an existing road having a vertical parabolic curve.

II. Instruments

1 unit - Engineers transit 1 pc - Plumb bob

1 roll - string 1 pc - 50-meter tape
10 pcs - marking pins

III. Procedure

1. Select an existing road having a length ranging from 300 to 1000 meters which has a
vertical curve component.
2. Conduct a profile leveling along the selected route. The regular ground distance
between points shall be 10 meters. For purposes of this activity and to avoid vehicular
traffic select the edge of the pavement i.e. along the joint of the road pavement and
gutter. Assume the elevation of the first point on your profile leveling.
3. Take note about specific remarks on the location of points during leveling.
4. Evaluate your field data and compute and tabulate the following:
 Relative elevations of all points along the route;
 Horizontal distance between points;
 Slope (grade) between points along the route.

Also determine the following parameters:

 Grade of forward and back tangents;
 Length of all vertical parabolic curves included along the route;
 Stationing of BVC, PVI, and EVC;
 Highest / lowest point on the vertical curve.
5. Formulate your findings, recommendations and conclusions based on your data,
evaluation, computation and results:
 The appropriate tangent slopes and corresponding curve elevations;
 Should you maintain or revise the existing road slopes and elevations?
