Hobart, Australia

• Hobart is the capital city of the Australian island state, Tasmania. It is located
on the south-eastern corner of the island, on the coast, and at the entrance to
the Derwent River.

• Hobart is Australia’s second oldest capital city,


behind Sydney, and is the chief port of the island
state.

• The population of Hobart is estimated at


over 220 000 people, making it the second-least
populated Australian capital city (Darwin is the
least populated).

• Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer, was the first known


European to reach Tasmania, which he originally named
‘Van Diemen's Land’.

• Hobart was founded in 1804 when Lieutenant-Governor


Collins moved a nearby settlement to the location of
Sullivan’s Cove, due to it having good water, a good port
and shelter, from Mount Wellington.

• The town was initially established as a penal colony for


both male and female convicts. However, due to its deep-water port, Hobart
was also an important centre for shipbuilding, as well as the whaling and
sealing industries.

• Hobart experiences four distinct seasons with a mild,


temperate oceanic climate.
