CURLING CANADA • 2021 BKT TIRES & OK TIRE WORLD MEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP, PRESENTED BY NEW HOLLAND • MEDIA GUIDE 5
FACT SHEET
OFFICIAL NAME: BKT Tires & OK Tire World Men’s Curling Championship, presented by New Holland
DATE/SITE: April 2-11, 2021 - WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park, Calgary
FORMAT: Fourteen teams compete in a 13-game round robin. The top two teams in the standings advance directly
to the semifinals. The third through sixth ranked teams compete in qualification games (3 vs. 6; 4 vs. 5)
with the winners advancing to the semifinals. The semifinal winners play in the gold-medal game and
the losers play for bronze.
No tiebreakers will be played, so ties for playoff spots are to be broken based on head-to-head results,
and if that doesn’t resolve the tie, then the pre-game Last-Shot Draw distances will be used.
HOW TEAMS QUALIFIED: With the cancellation of all world women’s and men’s world championship qualification events, a new
qualification process for the 2021 world championships has been implemented.
Qualification for the 2021 edition of both the world women’s and world men’s championships will now
be determined through a combination of the 2019 qualification event results and the existing World
Rankings.
As there was no last place finisher in the cancelled 2020 editions of the world championships, the zonal
allocation announced Sept. 1, 2020 for the originally scheduled 13-team event is:
On Oct. 6, 2020 the World Curling Federation expanded the field of the women’s and men’s world
championships from 13 to 14 teams to include those teams who had secured a place in the 2020 World
Championships but failed to meet the qualification requirements for the 2021 championships.
CURLING CANADA • 2021 BKT TIRES & OK TIRE WORLD MEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP, PRESENTED BY NEW HOLLAND • MEDIA GUIDE 6
OLYMPIC Men’s and Women’s Qualification at World Championships:
QUALIFYING: • The six highest ranked National Olympic Committees, of the Member Associations of the World
Curling Federation, from the 2021 world women’s and world men’s curling championships will
qualify for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 team competitions.
• In the situation where the Chinese National Olympic Committee teams finish outside of the top six
places at these events, it will qualify automatically for the respective Olympic Winter Games Beijing
2022 team competition through the allocation of the host country quota place.
• Teams who qualified for the 2020 or 2021 world championships but have not already qualified for
the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022
• The two highest ranking teams in the World Curling Federation Pre-Qualifier Event
• The host National Olympic Committee of the Olympic Qualification Event 2021
GAME DURATION: Ten ends are scheduled with extra end(s) to break tied games. A minimum of eight (8) must completed
in the play-off games, in any other games a minimum of six (6) ends must be completed. Extra end(s)
will be played to break tied games.
GAME TIMING: Thinking time will be used for this event. Each team receives 38 minutes to complete a ten-end game.
Extra ends will be four minutes and 30 second (4:30) of thinking time for each team. A team’s clock
begins:
• Once the opposing team has completed their shot, all rocks have come to rest and moved
behind the back line; AND
• the opposing team’s sweepers have moved to the side of the sheet; AND
• the opposition in charge of the house has relinquished control of the house; AND
• the person in charge of the house (the delivering team) has taken control of the house.
A team’s game clock stops once the stone has reached the nearest tee-line at the delivery end.
TIMEOUTS: Each team is allotted one, 60-second timeout (plus travel time). The timeout must be signaled to the
umpire and time clock operator. Either a coach OR alternate may attend the timeout, but not both.
A translator may also attend if required.
Both teams will receive one 60-second timeout to play in any extra end during that game.
CURLING CANADA • 2021 BKT TIRES & OK TIRE WORLD MEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP, PRESENTED BY NEW HOLLAND • MEDIA GUIDE 7
LAST STONE DRAW The team listed first in the draw schedule for the round robin games will play the stones with
(LSD): the dark-coloured handles; the team listed second will play with the stones with the light
coloured handles.
For games requiring Last Stone Draws (LSD), at the conclusion of each team’s pre-game
practice, two stones will be delivered to the tee at the home end, by different players – the first
stone with a clockwise and the second with a counter-clockwise rotation. A player (alternate)
that delivers or sweeps an LSD stone does not have to play in that game. Sweeping is allowed.
The first stone will be measured and removed from play before the second stone is delivered.
The distances recorded for each stone will be added together to give the team its LSD total
for that game. The team with the lesser LSD total will have the choice of delivering the first or
second stone in the first end of that game. If the LSD totals for both teams are the same, the
individual LSD stones are compared and the best non-equal LSD has the choice of delivering
first or second stone in the first end. When both teams have the exact same individual LSD
stone distances, a coin toss will be used to determine that choice.
PLAYOFF GAMES, When round robin play (one group) is used at WCF competitions, with each competing team
STONE SELECTION & playing all other teams, stone colour and first stone in the first end of post round robin games
LAST STONE ADVANTAGE: is determined as follows:
(i) The team with the better win/loss record has the choice of stone colour and playing first or
second stone in the first end.
(ii) If the teams have the same win/loss record, the winner of their round robin game has the
choice of stone colour or playing first or second stone in the first end.
