ASSIGNMENT 6 (Observing a student): Discretely observe one student in your assigned classroom

during an extended period of direct instruction.

Detail what was going on in the environment, and what you observed the student doing while the lesson
was being given. Make sure to document ALL behavior in relationship to what was being presented by
the classroom teacher. Please describe the setting, the lesson that was given, if the student was on task
and engaged in the lesson, and what you uncovered about putting yourself in a lesson from the student’s
point of view. >>>

The class is a ECSE self-contained preschool class, so the kids are learning proper behavior in
the classroom. The class starts with circle time in the front of the class on the shapes rug. The
kids sit side by side. The male student spends time babbling and being slightly disruptive. As a
result, the teacher asks him to move to the seat by the class aide to discourage bad behavior.
When he listens and moves, the teacher and aide gives him praise for listening. However,
minutes later, he starts babbling and stops paying attention. The aide has to then remind the
student of the proper behavior and to listen to the lesson. During this time, the class is learning
about fire safety and watches a video pertaining to the subject. When the student continues to
be disruptive, the aide moves seats and separates the student from the others. When the student
eventually gets involved on the subject, he is then praised for participating. I think for the
student the subject was uninteresting. The topic of fire safety would have been more
interesting if the student felt it was more relevant to his everyday life.
