Please provide a summary of the aims and objectives of the work to be reported in the paper. It
should be in English and not exceed 300 words.

The significant number of events occurring in tunnels illustrates the consequences of the lack of
tunnel structural design and safety leading to unforgettable losses. On October 30th 2016, a
magnitude 6.6 Mw earthquake struck the region of Norcia in central Italy, causing severe
damage to the bidirectional San Benedetto tunnel, especially the ceiling where the semi-
transverse ventilation plant is located, as well as the segments and pavement. The study
encompasses the likely consequences connected to the choice of the type of ventilation system
and the effectiveness of the ventilation system during operation and the outcomes whether the
ventilation system works or does not due to damages provoked by the seismic action. The
scientific work is devoted to the study of seismic conditions around the tunnel of San Benedetto
and the fragility of the cement coating and damage to the semi-transverse ventilation system.
Furthermore, the analysis focused on the interaction between the effectiveness of plant and the
protection function of the ventilation system. In addition, the designer of the ventilation system in
the San Benedetto tunnel is directly involved in the study through a tailor-made questionnaire,
an engineer who redesigns the actual design solution in the area that has been most damaged.
