Grade Level: 3rd

Multicultural Goal: Reverence for the earth; increase awareness of our global dynamics.

2 Observable Objectives:
1) Students will be able to identify and distinguish the four seasons, give examples of
weather that occur during the seasons, and identify different cultural holidays that occur
in different seasons.
2) Students will be able to recognize the significance of the four seasons and why they are
beneficial to humans and the health of the earth.

Lesson Materials:
- Guided Practice sheet (included as additional file)
- Independent Practice sheet (included as additional file)
- Colorful sticky notes (blue, green, orange, yellow)
- Highlighters (pink, blue, green, yellow)

Activity Summary: They will first reflect on their own knowledge and give examples of
weathers they may experience in different seasons. Students will be given a brief introduction
on the four seasons. Students will then pick a season to write about. They will discuss why it is
their favorite season and how it correlates to the places they have lived and experiences they
have had with family. Students will then share with the class their favorite season. Students will
also discuss the different holidays of cultural groups that occur during the seasons, and engage
with their classmates about similarities and differences.

1. Do First: Students will be divided into groups of four. Students will reflect on their own
knowledge and discuss the different weathers they experience regularly amongst their
groups. Then, they will select one person to share with the class the types of weather
they discussed. Everyone in each group will share their favorite type of weather. (5
minutes)

2. Mini Lesson: Students will be taught the four types of seasons: spring, summer,
fall/autumn, and winter. In each of these seasons, I will explain what months of the year
they occur, the types of changes that occur to our environment, and how human life may
adapt around the seasons. I will also discuss the importance of seasons for our
every-day lives. I will also discuss holidays celebrated by different cultural groups during
different seasons. I will show a short video about seasons as well. (15 minutes)

3. Guided Practice: Students will be given a guided practice worksheet focusing different
seasons. They will get back into their groups of four and match all of the appropriate
choices to the season. They will match holidays to the appropriate season. They will
match weather to the appropriate season. (15 minutes)
4. Independent Practice: Students will work on their independent practice sheet
individually. The worksheet places emphasis on personal relationships to the seasons
and how it incorporates into their family lives and traditions. When finished with their
independent practice worksheet, students can share with a friend around them and have
the opportunity to share with the class. (20 minutes)

5. Exit Slip: Students will write on a colored sticky note corresponding to a season (blue
for winter, green for spring, orange for fall, yellow for summer.) On the sticky note, the
student will write what they think is most significant of that season, given what they have
learned about seasons. The student will then place their sticky note on the board as their
exit ticket out the door. (5 minutes)

Reflection: Overall, I feel that I have created a strong lesson plan and accomplished my
multicultural goal. By teaching students about the seasons, the cultural holidays that take place
during different parts of the year, and the weather that occur during particular seasons, students
are able to make connections with their environment and their classmates. I included both
cooperative activities and independent activities for this lesson plan. I recognize that some
students may do well working independently while others enjoy connecting and cooperating with
their classmates, so I wanted to make sure I incorporated both into my lesson. I feel that
students will engage with these methods of instruction because I will be teaching them
personally, as well as using a video aid. By teaching students about the seasons and how they
can connect it to themselves and one another, I feel I can accomplish the goal of creating
reverence for the earth and develop their awareness of global dynamics. I feel the student
engagement would be high because students are given the opportunity to talk to one another,
share about themselves, and participate in a fun assignment.
