Discussion

Litmus paper, congo red, phenolphthalein,

and pH paper are indicators of pH.

In litmus paper, a change from red to blue

indicates contact with a base while a
change from blue to red indicates contact
with an acid.
Discussion

Strong electrolytes are strong acids and

strong bases. They completely dissociate
into ions. They are good conductors.

Weak electrolytes are weak acids and weak

bases. They do not completely dissociate
into ions. They are poor conductors.
What relationship can you draw
between the acidity/basicity of
a substance and its electrolyte
property?
What relationship can you draw between
the acidity/basicity of a substance and its
electrolyte property?

The stronger the basicity or acidity of a substance, the

stronger the conductivity. THerefore, strong acids and
strong bases are strong electrolytes while weak acids
and weak bases are weak electrolytes.
Why are electrolytes conductors
of electricity?
Why are electrolytes conductors of
electricity?

Electrolytes are conductors of electricity

because they produce ions in a solution.
Ions carry electrical charge from one
electrode to another, completing the
electrical circuit. The greater the number of
ions present, the greater the electrical
conductivity of the solution.
