Competency Category 1: Clinician

Registered nurses are clinicians who provide safe, competent, ethical, compassionate, and

evidence-informed care across the lifespan in response to client needs. Registered nurses

integrate knowledge, skills, judgment and professional values from nursing and other diverse

sources into their practice.

List of Clinician learning needs for the RN role:

Improve Clinician competency “1.1- Provides safe, ethical, competent, compassionate,

client-centered and evidence-informed nursing care across the lifespan in response to client

needs.”

1. As a nurse it is important for me to provide safe, ethical, competent, compassionate,

client centered and evidence-informed care to integrate into my nursing practice to

provide high-quality care.

Improve Clinician competency 1.2- “Conducts a holistic nursing assessment to collect

comprehensive information on client health status.”

2. As a nurse it is important for me to demonstrate holistic nursing assessment in collection

of a client’s health information in a comprehensive manner.

Improve Clinician competency 1.5 “Develops plan of care using critical inquiry to support

professional judgment and reasoned decision-making”

3. As a nurse it is important for me to use professional judgment and reasoned decision-

making when developing a client’s plan of care.

According to Mika Fukada,2018 stated that nursing competency is described as a

complex integration of knowledge that is inclusive of professional judgment, skills,

values and attitude. In nursing practice, it’s imperative for nurses to apply their acquired

knowledge, skills and innate individual traits to specific scenarios and transition that

knowledge and those skills to different situations.

Reflection: By completing the learning plan, as a clinician, I could promote safe,

competent, client centered care. additionally, as a nurse clinician, I have learned to

collaborate with the interdisplinary team in communicating positive test results and

initiate pandemic isolation measures in unit thereby promote safety for clients.
