LESSON PLAN
Class: IV Subject: Math Teacher: Kiran Liaquat Time Duration: 35 minutes
Title Whole Numbers and Operations
Topic Subtraction

Aims and objectives  Subtraction of numbers up to 5-digits

 Real-life subtraction number stories up to 5-digits
Learning Outcomes/ SLO Students will be able to:
 Subtracting of numbers up to 5-digits
 Solving real-life subtraction word problems up to 5-digits
Teaching Aid  Number Flashcards
 Coloured chart, sheets colour ,pencils, marker, recycled boxes, coloured
glazed papers, scissors, glue, paper cups
 Whiteboard, markers
Methodology Interactive/participative Method

Recapitulation Revise the concepts of 4-digit subtraction with basic sums, without the concept of
borrowing first. Once students are doing it well, start working with sums that involve
borrowing, in the tens place, moving on to the hundreds place and so on. While
practicing borrowing sums, remind the students to use rough columns for any extra
work to be done. Practice with the video in the link below for subtraction sums using
borrowing.
Motivational Question Here are some challenging questions to provoke students to think hard:
 Ayesha made a journey of 58,732 km. Out of this, she covered 47,862 by train
and the rest by a car. How many km did she cover by car?
 When you put together 34,000 and 28,000 and take away 45,222 from it,
what number are you left with?
Math Lab Activity To understand the concept of addition and subtraction as opposite operations.
Perform the given activity on page no. 32.
Digital Learning Since students have already learned the concepts of 4-digit subtraction done
vertically or horizontally, with and without borrowing numbers, 5-digit subtraction
will be introduced in the exact same manner.
Here is a video you can follow using the same strategies to teach children about 5-
digit subtraction.

Assignment/ Homework Practice with lessons given on pages 25 and 26 of the student book and conduct
pages 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 of the student book as classwork. Give pages 13, 14, 15
and 16 of the workbook as homework after brief discussions in the class.
Assessment You can give students some word problem that use the key words for subtraction and
without telling them that it is a subtraction sum, ask them to figure out and solve the
sum on their own. A few sample questions are given below:
 A musical show with 12,212 people watching suddenly started to get boring.
Around 10,565 people left in the middle of the show. How many people were
left watching the show?
 Hassan donated Rs. 63,590 to his favourite charity. He has Rs. 100,000 in his
account previously. How much money does he have left now?
