Program Description
o The program is designed for individuals with SUD for Cocaine that are 18 and
older. The participants are in an inpatient facility and nearing their discharge. All
genders can participate in this program. Smash it like "Happy" can be done in
both a group and individual setting depending on a client's specific comorbidities
that may interfere with the group setting. The preferred method is to be done in a
group setting. Using the game of golf and teaching techniques and principles of
the game to the group's participants. They are provided the opportunity to grow in
emotional control, coping ahead, and dealing with triggering events.
Program Outcomes
o The participants in the intervention will see an improvement in their emotional
control.
o The participants will be able to demonstrate an ability to cope ahead with stressful
events.
o The participants will be able to use coping strategies to help with overcoming
triggering events related to relapsing on the substance.
Client Problems
o Trauma
The participants can be dealing with trauma from past experiences or
adverse childhood experiences. Using the substance was their way of
coping. Providing alternative ways to deal with the triggering events
without using the substance will be addressed in this program.
o Impaired Mental Health
The participants will often have a comorbid disorder with their SUD. The
skills learned through Smash it like "Happy" program, will help with the
SUD and other mental health disorders.
o Impaired Physical Health
Participants may be experiencing problems with their physical health. The
game of golf will require some physical activity. Requiring them to move
slower or need carts to get around the course instead of moving
independently.
o Relapse
The participants are at high risk of relapse when they leave an inpatient
setting. Providing them with resources to help prevent that is the purpose
of this group.
Modalities/Activity Interventions
Referral Criteria
o The participants will be referred to this group via their interdisciplinary team,
psychologist, or psychiatrist.
Contraindicated Criteria
o Avoid golf courses during the busiest hours.
Seeing individuals drinking beer or potentially using other substances
could be too much of a trigger for participants.
o Most clients will benefit from this program; however, clients with the following
might find difficulty.
Those with severe comorbidities
Those with limited or no physical mobility
Those with respiratory problems requiring oxygen
Program Evaluation
o Data collection
Attendance of group
Participation in each group
Tracking of client goals with weekly meetings with the RT
Tracking the relationship between golf and the skills taught by placing
each client in specific situations
Assigning and reviewing journaling events at the end of each session
