The book “Software Quality Assurance” from theory to implementation by Daniel Galin,
significantly improves the knowledge in this practical and software industry related area.
The book is comprehensive to cover all the important aspects of Software Quality
Assurance. It provides a broad overview of software quality assurance. The book
illustrates very well practical aspects of SQA applications, operation, organization and
control.

The book is divided in seven parts spanning twenty six chapters. The first part starts with
introduction that includes concepts regarding challenges and importance of software
quality, software quality assurance, software quality factors. The second part is regarding
pre-project software quality components i.e. contract review and development and quality
plans. While part third is detailed discussion in seven chapters about SQA components in
the project life-cycle. This expands integrating quality activities in the project life cycle,
reviews, software testing strategies and implementation, assuring the quality of software
maintenance components and quality of external participant’s contributions. It also
includes CASE tools and their effect on software quality. The fourth part illustrates
software quality infrastructure components which deals with procedure and work
instructions, staff training and certifications, corrective and preventive actions,
configuration management and documentation control. Part fifth covers management
components of software quality which focuses on project progress control, software
quality metrics and cost of software quality. A nice survey of various software quality
management standards and SQA project process standards is covered in part sixth. Lastly
part seventh organizing for quality assurance sum up with management role in assuring
software quality, SQA units and its constituent parts.

A significant feature of the book is summary at the end of each chapter, selected
bibliography for further references, review questions, topics for discussion. This makes it
ideal to adopt this as a text and reference book for Software quality assurance or related
courses. It also includes professional appendices, which consists a collection of useful
documents templates and review checklists.

The language of the book is clear and concise, easy to understand, well structured text
along with illustrations of real project cases and examples of SQA wherever needed. All
this makes reading the book a pleasant experience. The book is written to meet the needs
of a wide audience of readers interested in software quality assurance. The four main
groups may be managers & project managers of software development departments,
students of vocational training courses, colleges and universities and practitioners
involved in quality issues of software development and maintenance.

A downloadable Instructor’s Guide, PowerPoint slides and additional testing materials

are also available to lecturers and tutors adopting the book at www.booksites.net/galin.
Emphasis is placed throughout the book on organization control and other aspects
required in the implementation of SQA components.

While comparing this book with handbook of software quality assurance by G.Gordon
Schulmeyer et al. which is also comprehensive in scope but is in the form of collection of
essays of various experts. The main intent of the book is to prepare the reader for CSQE
examinations. Another book titled customer-oriented software quality assurance by Frank
P. Ginac is comprehensive practical guide to customer-focused SQA for all types of
organizations. John W. Horch’s practical guide to software quality management presents
overview of total software quality framework. This book is a good primer for managers
and engineers. A new book Achieving software quality through teamwork by Isabel
Evans is more concerned regarding team aspects and its various components while
ensuring quality in software.

The book is very comprehensive in the range of SQA topics covered. To sum-up this
book is unique among contemporary other books available on Software Quality
Assurance and related topics.
