LESSON NOTES

‘Memory Game’

This is an oral grammar game to drill the Present Simple tense 3rd person
singular ‘s’ ending. You can play it after Module 8 of Opportunities Beginner
Students’ Book or as a filler anytime after this module during the course.

Materials: None.
Time: 10-15 minutes.

Step 1: Divide the class into groups of between four and six students,

Step 2: Explain the game. Student 1 says a sentence using “I like”. Student 2
repeats what Student 1 likes and then says what he/she likes. Student 3 then
repeats what Students 1 and 2 like and says what he/she likes. And so on,
round the group, again and again, until students have to remember a very long
list! Don’t tell them that the aim is to practise the third-person ending; the
drilling of this should come naturally during the game. Here is an example for a
group of four students:

Sonia: I like tennis.

Paul: Sonia likes tennis and I like watching videos.
Karen: Sonia likes tennis, Paul likes watching videos and I like reading.
Oscar: Sonia likes tennis, Paul likes watching videos, Karen likes reading and
I like football.
Sonia: I like tennis, Paul likes watching videos, Karen likes reading, Oscar
likes football and I like pizzas.
Paul: Sonia likes … (etc).

Walk round and monitor what the students are saying. Help with vocabulary.

Step 3: Stop the game after ten or fifteen minutes. Ask one student to tell the
class about what his/her group likes. You can then remind the class about the
third-person singular ‘s’ ending using that student’s examples.

Option: You can play the same game to drill negatives (‘don’t like’ and
‘doesn’t like’). With a small class you can play this as a whole class activity
rather than in groups.
