Abstract. The species of Ocotea (Lauraceae) collected by Ludwig Riedel are commented and contextualized
according to the different itineraries he travelled in Brazil, from 1821 to 1836, indicating the localities and dates
of collections, whenever possible. To complete this work, two diaries of Riedel have been consulted and the infor-
mation from them crossed-checked with the annotations found on specimen labels. An annotated list of 44 entries
provides information on the status of species names and their types, currently accepted names, and collections
found in different herbaria. Lectotypes for 19 names are designated, two new synonyms are proposed, as well
as the new combination Ocotea estrellensis (Meisn.) P.L.R. Moraes, based on Oreodaphne estrellensis Meisn.
Resumo. As espécies de Ocotea (Lauraceae) coletadas por Ludwig Riedel são comentadas e contextualizadas
de acordo com os diferentes itinerários que ele percorreu no Brasil, de 1821 a 1836, indicando as localidades e
datas das coleções, sempre que possível. Para tanto, dois diários de Riedel foram consultados e as informações
a partir deles foram confrontadas com as anotações encontradas nas etiquetas de espécimes. Uma lista anotada
de 44 entradas provê a informação sobre o estado dos nomes das espécies e de seus tipos, nomes correntemente
aceitos, e as coleções encontradas nos diferentes herbários. Lectótipos para 19 nomes são designados, duas novas
sinonímias são propostas, assim como a nova combinação Ocotea estrellensis (Meisn.) P.L.R. Moraes, baseada
em Oreodaphne estrellensis Meisn.

were treated similarly to what is presented here to as “diary of Mato Grosso”; see Augel, 1990;

account on Riedel’s diaries, and an overview unpublished and contains a list of collections
of his Brazilian collections, gathered between of plants numbered from 1201 to 1612, related

In the protologue of Oreodaphne cernua,
Nees von Esenbeck (1836: 424) indicated
“Laurus nutans Hornem in Herb. Endlich.
Laurus. Sieber Fl. Martinic. n. 106. et Fl.
mixt. n. 384. (fructifera); tum Fl. mixt. n. 395.
(ante anthesin et probabiliter mascula.).”
Nees indication of “Sieber Flora mixta. No.
395” is very likely an error. Mez (1888: 422)
lectotypified the species name by newly
combining it in Ocotea and by citing only the
specimen of “Sieber fl. mixt. No. 385” from
Herbarium Döll, which is currently at KR.

Rohwer (1986) has circumscribed Ocotea
cernua (Nees) Mez in a very broad sense. Once
confirmed that the taxa described and collected
by Ruiz & Pavón in Peru are the same as the
one described by Nees from collections of
Sieber Flora Martinicensis & Mixta, Ocotea
leptobotra (Ruiz & Pav.) Mez must be the
correct name for having priority. A detailed
account on the probable date of publication
of the Lauraceae species in Ruiz and Pavón’s
Flora Peruviana et Chilensis can be found in
Moraes (2012b) under the entry of Nectandra
purpurea (Ruiz & Pav.) Mez.
In Riedel’s diary of Bahia, on reverse of
leaf 37 he wrote: “143, Laurus sanguinea
? Surinamensis ? fol. lanceolato-ovatis
acuminatis subtus venoso-reticulatis racemis
axillarib. ramis patentissimis. ♄,” which is the
same information transcribed by Meissner on
the label of the specimen Riedel 143 at NY.

Assis and Mello-Silva (2010) reduced
Ocotea complicata (Meisn.) Mez to synonymy
under O. fasciculata (Nees) Mez, which is here
not accepted. The reason is based on differences
between both taxa in habit, flower, fruit and
vegetative characters, as well as in their habitats.
Specimen LE 00000570 bears an original
label by Riedel with the description “Cal. 6
partitus laciniis alternis interioribus Staminum
filamenta 9 membranacea lata apice rotundata,
quorum 6 exteriora calyci opposita, 3 interiora
basi biglandulosa; antherae 4 singulo filamento
intus adnatae, 2 inferiores 2 superiores… .” In
his diary of Bahia, on leaf 73, Riedel wrote:
“766, Ocotea Aubl. cal. 6 partitus, laciniis alternis
interiorib. Staminum filamenta 9 membranacea
lata apice rotundata, quorum 6 exteriora calyci
opposita, 3 interiora basi biglandulosa; antherae
4 singulo filamento intus adnatae 2 inferiores, 2
superiores. Stigm. ___ Cal. Corolla 6 part. laciniis
ovatis, albis. Cal. Ø Arbor 12–15 ped. fol. ovato-
ellipticis nitidis, coriaceis, florib. racemosis

The information on the original label of
specimens at LE and L quotes “arbor 15–18 ped.
pyramidatis flore. viride-lutei.” Rohwer (1986:
93) included “Phoebe ? estrellensis” (Meisn.)
Kosterm. in his key to the species of Ocotea,
and he pointed out that the habit of the species
agrees with that of Ocotea minarum (Nees &
Mart.) Mez, but the flowers differ significantly
for presenting well-developed staminodes and a
proportionately much larger ovary (Rohwer,
2012 de Moraes, BRAZILIAN Ocotea COLLECTIONS OF RIEDEL 251
1986: 128). Lorea-Hernández (1996: 205) placed
Cinnamomum estrellense (Meisn.) Kosterm.
in the list of excluded species, indicating its
identity as an Ocotea. Neither Rohwer nor
Lorea-Hernández made the formal combination
in Ocotea (see entry number 44, present work).
The specimen collected by Glaziou 20445
in Nova Friburgo, 4 September 1892 (G, P
00128553, P 00128554, P 00128555) was
determined by Luciano Bernardi as Phoebe
estrellensis, but it belongs to the Ocotea
indecora (Schott) Mez Complex sensu Rohwer
(1986). The specimens from Espírito Santo
listed above match well the vegetative and
floral characters observed in the type specimen
collected by Riedel.

bears an original label by Riedel stating

Riedel at LE, which bears a label just indicating
“Mandioca,” and that was annotated by
Kostermans as “Ocotea,” also belongs to Ocotea

of Mespilodaphne indecora var. intermedia
proposed by Assis and Mello-Silva, (2010: 378)
is superfluous, since Meissner indicated a single
collection by Riedel and only annotated the

Although Mez (1889), Rohwer (1986), and
van der Werff (2002) have indicated Ocotea
longifolia Kunth and O. aurantiodora (Ruiz
& Pav.) Mez as probable synonyms, I am here
keeping the traditional use of the former name
for the Brazilian specimens, and indicating the
latter in synonymy with doubt, since there is no
recent revision of these taxa confirming their
status. Once proved they would be the same
entity, Ocotea aurantiodora should be the name
to be adopted for being the oldest one (see entry
number 4, present work; Moraes, 2012b). The
information transcribed by Meissner on the label
of Riedel’s specimen at NY says “arbor 25–30
ped., fol. subtus sericeis, flor. axill. flavesc.,”
therefore agreeing with the information given
by Riedel in his diary of Mato Grosso (Fig. 1C).

The holotype bears an original label by
Riedel with “773, Ocotea sp. fol. ovato. oblongis
acuminatis, florib. axillarib. lateralibus: cor.

the same information he wrote in his diary of
Bahia, on reverse of leaf 73 (Fig. 1D). In his
diary, on 7 February 1821, Riedel reported the
arrival at night at Fazenda Esperança, “where
some French have a sawmill.” During his stay
in the region of Ilhéus, it was one of the places
frequently visited by him (see Augel, 1979).

As pointed out by Rohwer (1986), the
placement of this species in Ocotea is dubious
since it is only known by the fruiting collection.
An additional complication arises from the fact
that Riedel 486 is a mixed collection as indicated
by Meissner (1864). From the specimens I have
seen, the sheets at B and the two at LE share the
same morphological pattern in contrast to the
one presented by those at G, K, and NY, which
resembles Ocotea insignis Mez, as indicated by
Mez (1889). An original label by Riedel from
a sheet at LE is annotated with “486, Persea.

In the protologue of Mespilodaphne pretiosa
var. longifolia, Meissner (1864) mixed the
information from two different collections of
Riedel in LE, one flowering, the other fruiting,
by quoting “[c]irca Mandiocca (Riedel n. 1867
!). Corticis foliorunque odor cinnamomeus,
unde arbor ab incolis Canella nuncupatur.”
Later, Meissner (1866) explicitly and correctly
pointed it out with “β. in sylvis circa Mandiocca,
m. Aug., et prope S. Carlos, m. Jan.: Riedel n.
1867.” The lectotype designated here bears an
original label by Riedel with “Arbor 15–20
ped. flores albidi odoratus,” whereas the label
on Riedel 1867 states “1867, Laurus. Arbor
20–50 ped. frondosiss. pyramidatis odorem
Lauri Cinnamom: spirant. foli oblong. utrinq.
attenuatis glaberr. Canella Brasil.” On the label
of the flowering specimen at NY 00355361,
Meissner mistakenly transcribed the information
from the fruiting specimen Riedel 1867.

(1864: 142), and also Mez (1889: 344) have cited

as Ocotea puberula (Rich.) Nees, i.e., in the
sense of the lectotype specimen by LeBlond
215, and of the material used by Nees (1836:
472), from Bahia, “inter virgulta ad Trancozo,”
collected by M. A. P., Prinz zu Wied s.n.

of this species still remains uncertain since it
is only known by the fruiting collection type.
It resembles the general aspect of Ocotea
corymbosa (Meisn.) Mez and O. notata (Nees
& Mart.) Mez, but differs from them in its
peculiar deep and densely pilose domatia in the
axil of secondary veins of leaves, and by the
relatively shallow cup with a thick pedicel.

Specimen LE 00000529 bears an original
label by Riedel with “arbor 20–25 ped. flores
luteoli,” which was transcribed by Meissner on
label of sheet NY 00355848.
Lorea-Hernández (1996) undertook the most
recent revision of the Neotropical species of
Cinnamomum. In his treatment, Cinnamomum
riedelianum Kosterm. was considered as a
doubtful species for presenting penninerved
leaves, and for the ovary wholly immersed in
the hypanthium, a feature usually found among
representatives of Aniba Aubl. and Cryptocarya
R. Br. (Lorea-Hernández, 1996: 214). However,
C. riedelianum could be excluded from Aniba
and Cryptocarya for its 4-locular stamens in
whorls I and II. Quinet (2010) coined a new
name for the taxon in question, thus based on
Persea riedelii Meisn., claiming that it was
necessary because the epithet “riedelii” in
Ocotea was already occupied. However, the
epithet “riedeliana” is available in Ocotea, from
the new name proposed by Kostermans, which
makes illegitimate the new name proposed by
Quinet. In addition, a series of incorrections
stated by Quinet must be also cleared: 1) in the
indication of the type as “Tipo: BRASIL. Rio
de Janeiro: Petrópolis, Mandiocca, s.d. (fl.),
Riedel s.n. (holótipo LE; isótipos K?, G n.v.),”
Quinet wrongly recorded the municipality
of Petrópolis for the type-locality of “inter
Mandiocca et Porto Estrella,” which is written
on the labels of the specimens at LE, and that
belongs to Magé; he omitted the date of the
collection, which is also stated on the labels at
LE; both instances indicate that either he had
not seen the holotype, or that he had misstated
what he had verified; his quotation with doubt of
a duplicate in Kew disagrees with what had been
registered by Mez (1889: 198) and by Lorea-
Hernández (1996: 214); 2) his quotation that
Vattimo-Gil (1959–1961) transfered the known
Brazilian species of Phoebe to Cinnamomum,
without mentioning Cinnamomum riedelianum,
is correct, but he omitted, or overlooked, that
Vattimo-Gil (1966: 79) had synonymized her
Phoebe nunesiana under C. riedelianum; 3)
the indication that Rohwer (1986) included C.
riedelianum in the key to species of Ocotea,
and that he had commented on its transfer to
that genus is incorrect; 4) his quotation that
“Lorea-Hernández (1998) [sic] … excluiu a
espécie em questão do gênero Cinnamomum,
por não apresentar folhas acródromas e fruto
com cálice persistente, indicando que deve
ser posicionada no gênero Ocotea, porém não
efetuando a transferência” is also wrong; in
fact, as indicated in the comments of entry
number 13 of the present work, Rohwer (1986:
93) included “Phoebe ? estrellensis” in his
key to the species of Ocotea, while Lorea-
Hernández (1996: 205) placed Cinnamomum

estrellense (Meisn.) Kosterm. in the list of
excluded species, indicating its identity as an
Ocotea; however, neither Rohwer (1986) nor
Lorea-Hernández (1996) have proposed the
transfer of Cinnamomum riedelianum Kosterm.
to Ocotea, as vindicated by Quinet (2010);
5) from the description presented by Quinet,
his statement that the flowers have “tépalas
patentes, subglobosas, …” (“tepals spreading,
subglobose, …”) does not agree with what is
found in the type specimen of P. riedelii and
in other specimens with the typical pattern of
flowers with erect tepals, ovate to oblongo-ovate;
this, along with his indication of the distribution
of the species in the states of Espírito Santo,
Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Santa Catarina,
under the vernacular name of “canela-garuva,”
and from his determinations on the specimens
examined here, denote that Quinet most likely
has circumscribed Cinnamomum riedelianum
also including material belonging to Ocotea
estrellensis and to Phoebe nunesiana Vattimo-

I do not formalize here what should be
the new correct name in Ocotea for Persea
riedelii, with the epithet “riedeliana,” because
the available material from Rio de Janeiro
does not permit an indubitable placement in
this genus. For this taxon in particular, further
good fertile collections, preferably with
complete material from the type-locality, must
be acquired for a clear-cut decision solely
based on morphological ground. Similarly, the
specimens from Espírito Santo, listed above,
are placed here provisionally, since they greatly
resemble the morphological pattern of Riedel’s
collection (quoted by Barbosa and Moraes,
2007, as Cinnamomum riedelianum Kosterm.).
As indicated by Barbosa (2009), however,
the specimens from Espírito Santo show a
combination of characters, viz. erect tepals,
well developed sagittate staminodes, 2-locular
stamens in whorl III, and cupules relatively
woody, which could be better allocated in
Cinnamomum. Once admitted that these
specimens are identifiable as C. riedelianum,
thus this species could be registered for Espírito
Santo. Otherwise, there are no other collections
(known so far) from this state that could be
ascribed to belong to this species. In this
direction, the annotations by Quinet of “Ocotea
reginae A. Quinet, sp. nov.” (nom. nud.), on
labels of specimens L. Kollmann & al. 2719, V.
Demuner & al. 1149, 1376, and 1446, make the
understanding of his concept of C. riedelianum
even more puzzling.
