(b) Describe parallel axis and perpendicular axis theorems and discuss
applicabilities of these theorems. 7½
Q.3. Define equi-momental systems. Show that a triangular plate is
equi-momental to three particles such that the mass of each particle is
one-third of the mass of the triangular plate and is placed at the middle
point of a side, respectively. 17½
Q.4. (a) Describe d’Alembert’s principle and using it obtain the equations of
motion of a rigid body moving under impulsive forces in OXYZ frame,
with respect to O and about O respectively. 9
(b) Two unequal masses M and M  rest on two rough planes inclined at
angles  and  to the horizon. They are connected by a fine string
passing over a small pulley of mass m and radius a, which is placed at
the common vertex of the two planes. Show that the acceleration of
either mass is

where ,   are the coefficients of friction, k is the radius of gyration of
the pulley about its axis and M is the mass which moves downwards. 8½

Q.5. (a) Define centre of percussion of a rigid body with one fixed point. Find the
position of centre of percussion of a uniform circular plate with a
horizontal diameter being axis. 8½
(b) A lamina in the form of an ellipse is rotating in its own plane about one
of its foci with angular velocity . This focus is set free and other focus
at the same instant is fixed; show that the ellipse now rotates about it
2  5e 2

Q.6. (a) A thin uniform rod has one end attached to a smooth hinge and is
allowed to fall from a horizontal position, show that the horizontal strain
on the hinge is greatest when the rod is inclined at an angle 45º to the
11
vertical and that the vertical strain is then times the weight of the
8
rod. 9
(b) A cylinder rolls down a smooth plane whose inclination to the horizon is
, unwrapping, as it goes, a fine string fixed to the highest point on the
plane; find its acceleration and the tension of the string. 8½
Q.7. (a) Show that any system of forces in three dimensions acting on a rigid
body can be reduced to a single force acting at an arbitrary chosen point
of the body and a couple. 9
(b) Forces X, Y , Z act along the three straight lines
y  b, z   c ; z  c, x   a ; x  a, y   b, respectively. Show that they
a b c

Y Z X Z X Y
x y c
   0.

Q.8. (a) A body rests in equilibrium inside another fixed body, the portions of
the two bodies in contact being spheres of radii r and R respectively, and
the straight line joining the centres of the spheres being vertical; if the
first body be slightly displaced, then find whether the equilibrium is
stable or unstable, the bodies being rough enough to prevent sliding. 9
(b) A heavy uniform rod rests with one end against a smooth vertical wall
and with a point in its length resting on a smooth peg. Find the position
of equilibrium and show that it is unstable. 8½
