Anyone who's familiar with me or my content will

know just how much I love slice of life

anime!
00:04
For the longest time now, I've wanted to compile  my favourite slice of life anime together
00:08
in a 'definitive' list of sorts, and with 2020  continuing its trend of being depressingly awful,
00:13
I decided to take the plunge and finally  make this video. For the past two months,
00:18
I've watched and re-watched dozens of slice  of life anime in order to ensure this list is
00:22
an accurate reflection of how I currently feel  - as my taste has naturally changed over time,
00:27
so anime I first saw years ago may hit differently  than they did back then. Plus, there were still
00:32
dozens of slice of life anime on my plan to  watch list that I wanted to check out, to see
00:37
if any of them had a shot of making the list. Before we begin though, I feel it's worth
00:41
addressing one of the challenges  I faced when compiling this list.
00:44
Namely that slice of life is a very broad genre  and can seemingly bolt onto any other, causing
00:49
much debate within the community as to whether an  anime can be categorised as slice of life or
not.
00:54
I've already made a video on this subject,  so I'm not going to be repeating myself here,
00:58
but if there are any anime on this list you  feel aren't deserving of the slice of life tag,
01:02
then I'd highly recommend giving that video  a watch to see where I'm coming from. Lastly,
01:07
this goes without saying, but this is MY personal  list - meaning that your favourite slice of life
01:11
anime may not be featured here! There were several  anime that didn't make the cut, not
necessarily
01:16
because I didn't enjoy them but because there were  other similar anime that I simply enjoyed
more,
01:21
and so ended up losing their spot because of  that. There were also a few anime that didn't
01:25
make the cut because, at the time of making this  video, they aren't legally streamable
anywhere,
01:29
and I didn't want to include anime  that you can't easily go and watch.
01:33
OK! With that long introduction  out of the way, let us begin!
01:38
Starting off with Shonen Maid; one of my  absolute favourite slice of life anime
01:41
about a cleaning-compulsive boy who moves in with  his wealthy and eccentric uncle after his
mother
01:46
passes away. When he discovers his uncle's untidy  habits; he quickly gets to work cleaning his
01:50
house, and the two make an arrangement whereby his  accommodation is provided in exchange
for becoming
01:55
the house maid. What transpires is a heart-warming  story about family bonds and friendship;
02:00
with a supportive cast of characters, and an  uplifting atmosphere that always manages to
02:05
put a smile on my face. It's an underrated anime  that I'll never stop talking about because more
02:10
people need to see this wholesome gem! If you need  something warm and cosy to snuggle up
with, then I
02:14
thoroughly recommend giving this anime a watch.
02:18
You and Me is about as pure as a slice of life anime can get.
02:21
It's the story of four childhood friends and their everyday lives, as they learn
02:25
more about each other and themselves. When an  energetic transfer student later joins their
02:30
circle; their days become even more eventful, as  they get caught up in his playful, and
sometimes
02:35
troublesome, antics. If you're familiar with the  CGDCT formula, then this is kind of like that;
02:41
except with handsome young men instead. It really  is as straightforward as its plot synopsis
sounds,
02:46
as you're just watching these high school  boys going about their daily lives. While
02:50
its slow pace might be a turn off for some;  if you're looking for a chill anime to watch,
02:54
then you can't go wrong with this one.
02:57
Polar Bear Cafe is unsurprisingly all
02:59
about a pun-loving polar bear who runs a cafe;  where humans and animals alike can sit back,
03:04
relax and enjoy their favourite beverage. The cafe  is often frequented by a lively cast of
characters
03:10
including: a lazy pander, a sarcastic  penguin, a wise but often ignored llama,
03:14
and an intimidating grizzly bear with a heart  of pure gold. Watching the interactions between
03:19
these colourful characters is always a delight  to see, and the anime's generally light-hearted
03:23
comedy is one of the main reasons why this show  is so easily digestible. It's especially great
03:28
for those times when you just need something to  switch off and unwind to and, with fifty
episodes,
03:32
it's also one of few slice of life anime  that can be enjoyed for a very long time.
03:38
Aggretsuko follows the life of a twenty-five year  old single red panda, working in the
accounting
03:42
department of a Japanese trading firm, as she  tries her best to navigate the daily struggles
03:46
of living in an unfair capitalist society. In  order to cope with her everyday frustration,
03:51
she routinely goes to a karaoke bar to sing  death metal. This is easily one of the best,
03:56
and most relatable, workplace comedies I've seen;  as the show's writers do an excellent job of
04:01
creating relatable scenarios that many of us have  likely experienced at some point in our lives.
04:06
From pushy superiors and obnoxious co-workers  to meeting people's unrealistic expectations;
04:10
Aggretsuko has it all, and it does so while  managing to create a memorable cast of endearing
04:14
characters that you can't help but root for.
04:18
Space Brothers tells the story of two brothers who
04:20
vowed to become astronauts after witnessing what  they believed to be a UFO when they were
kids.
04:26
Nineteen years later, the younger brother  has become a fully-fledged JAXA astronaut,
04:30
while the older brother has not. However,  after losing his job, he decides to apply
04:35
for JAXA's next astronaut selection; embarking on  an ambitious journey to catch up to his
younger
04:39
brother and fulfil the promise they made as kids.  Space Brothers is a truly spectacular anime
that
04:45
superbly illustrates the enormous lengths one  must go to in order to even have a chance of
04:49
becoming an astronaut; let alone actually making  it as one. It's an incredibly engaging story,
04:54
with a likeable cast of characters that  reminded me why I love this genre so much!
04:59
Princess Jellyfish revolves around a group of  otaku women living together in an apartment
05:03
complex, where no men are allowed. Among them  is a socially awkward jellyfish-loving girl,
05:09
whose encounter with a beautiful woman  changes her life forever. Turns out the
05:13
elegant stranger is actually the son of a  wealthy politician - yet, despite this, he
05:17
embodies everything she secretly dreams of being;  a princess as ethereal as a floating jellyfish.
05:22
This anime positively oozes character! Its  cast, while eccentric, feel believably real
05:28
thanks to the show's grounded story and, unlike  other anime, Princess Jellyfish doesn't treat
05:32
its cross-dressing character as just the  butt of a joke, but as an actual person.
05:37
It manages to tug at your heart strings, whilst  remaining uplifting and funny throughout,
05:41
and is an all-around great show  that's definitely worth your time!
05:46
Croisee in a Foreign Labyrinth  is set during the 19th century
05:49
and centres on a Japanese girl who arrives  in Paris to help work at an ironwork shop.
05:54
The shop-owner, a blacksmith who makes street  signs, reluctantly agrees to take care of the girl
05:59
and together the two begin to learn  about their cultural differences,
06:02
whilst trying to keep the shop open; despite their  dwindling business. Historical European
settings
06:07
are not exactly common in anime, so that  alone was enough to pique my interest,
06:11
but the story is also delightfully charming - as  you get to see this cute Japanese girl trying her
06:16
best to adjust to the various European customs  she's unfamiliar with. The rest of the cast is
06:20
just as endearing, and the soothing atmosphere  makes this a very comforting anime to watch.
06:26
Please tell me Galko-chan follows the everyday  lives of an unlikely trio of girls in high school;
06:31
a trendy social butterfly with an unflattering  reputation due to her appearance, a plain-looking
06:37
otaku with a sarcastic personality, and an  airheaded wealthy young lady with excellent social
06:42
graces. Despite their differences the three are  best friends and frequently discuss girl problems.
06:48
There are few anime that tackle the subjects  of sex, puberty and adolescence without coming
06:52
off as crass or obnoxious but thankfully  this is one of the better ones out there.
06:56
Seeing a group of close friends talk candidly  about their bodies is honestly refreshing
07:00
because it's something you just don't see a  whole lot of in other anime set in high school.
07:04
It's unfortunate then that this anime  is so underrated - it deserves better!
07:10
Place to Place is a warm and comfy show about a  teenage girl who's in love with her best
friend.
07:16
Working up the courage to tell him her feelings  isn't exactly easy though - made worse by the
07:20
fact that the guy seemingly can't take a hint.  Throughout her everyday school life she spends
her
07:25
time with her friends, whilst trying to muster up  the courage to confess her feelings for him.
While
07:30
this is technically a romantic comedy, its best  treated as a wholesome slice of life anime
instead
07:34
because there's barely any romantic progression.  It's more about watching these close friends
hang
07:39
out with each other, and being adorable in the  process. If you're looking for a cute feel-good
07:44
show, with a fluffy atmosphere, then  I'd recommend giving this one a watch!
07:49
March comes in like a lion is without a  doubt the best slice of life drama ever
07:53
made! It's the story of a depressed and lonely  seventeen year-old professional shogi player,
07:57
who moves into his own apartment in Tokyo to avoid  inconveniencing his estranged adopted
family.
08:03
Soon after his arrival, he meets a trio of  sisters who share with him a unique familial
08:07
bond that he has lacked for most of his life.  March comes in like a lion is a meaningful and
08:12
hard-hitting drama, with wholesome slice  of life moments interspersed throughout,
08:16
and it's nothing short of phenomenal! Its  writing, characters and visuals are all superb,
08:22
and its second season is a masterpiece! Honestly,  I can't really say anymore without diving into
08:27
spoiler territory, so just go and watch this  anime if you haven't already. It's brilliant!
08:33
My Roommate is a Cat is about an introverted  novelist who struggles with relationships;
08:38
made worse by the tragic death of his parents,  which has left him all alone in the world. That is
08:43
until a stray tuxedo cat enters the picture! As  the two start bonding with each other, they foster
08:48
an understanding, and find happiness in their new  life together. One of the things I love about
this
08:54
anime is not only how accurately it portrays  living with a pet, but also how each episode
08:58
is structured; with it showing the same events  from each of our two protagonists' perspectives,
09:02
so you get to see what the other is thinking. It  also has a very warm and cosy atmosphere -
making
09:07
it the perfect show to relax to after a  particularly stressful day at school or work.
09:13
Girls' Last Tour is set in a post-apocalyptic  world that has been ravaged by war and conflict.
09:18
The only sound to break the silence is the  rumbling of a motorcycle - as two survivors
09:22
explore a war-torn city in search of supplies, and  speculate about the old world to pass the
time.
09:28
Even in a dying world, these two can always  find something to live for. Girls' Last Tour
09:33
is a surreal and disturbing slice of life anime  that surprisingly still manages to feel relaxing.
09:38
It's both light-hearted and emotionally  poignant; serving as a perfect example
09:43
of how diverse and varied the slice of life  genre can be. Don't let the setting fool you
09:47
into thinking this is a frightening anime though -  as it isn't the kind of show that induces
anxiety,
09:52
despite its bleak setting.
09:55
School Babysitters is the story
09:56
of a teenage boy who loses both of his parents and  must adjust to his new life as the guardian of
his
10:01
younger brother. While attending their parents'  funeral, they're approached by a stern
chairwoman
10:06
of an elite academy who offers to take them in,  providing he helps run the school's babysitters
10:10
club for the staff's children. School Babysitters  is a surprisingly great anime that continues to
10:16
delight me, even after successive re-watches.  Its visual presentation is by far the weakest
10:21
aspect of the show, but don't let that stop  you from checking out this amazing title!
10:25
It's an uplifting slice of life anime that isn't  afraid of showing just how gross and mischievous
10:29
young children can be, whilst also featuring  heartfelt scenes that are genuinely touching.
10:35
Hanasaku Iroha is about an energetic  sixteen year-old girl, who is left in
10:39
the care of her estranged grandmother when her  irresponsible mom elopes with her new
boyfriend.
10:44
Upon her arrival, she's forced to  work at the family's hot spring resort
10:47
and finds herself at odds with many of the staff  and customers. Initially feeling discouraged,
10:52
she decides to use her circumstances as an  opportunity to change herself for the better. It's
10:58
a remarkable coming-of-age story with a strong  cast of endearing characters that genuinely feel
11:02
like real people. As the series went on, I found  myself becoming increasingly attached to them,
11:07
in a way few slice of life anime are able to.  It's both uplifting and dramatic, and one that's
11:13
sadly infrequently mentioned. If you've not yet  seen this show, then I highly recommend it!
11:20
Poco's Udon World tells the story of a thirty  year-old web designer who takes a leave of
absence
11:25
in order to return to his hometown and sort out  his family's affairs. While reminiscing about
11:30
his childhood, he stumbles upon a small boy  who turns out to be a shape-shifting tanuki!
11:34
Through the time they spend together, he begins to  recall his own past, and the relationship he
had
11:39
with his late-father. If you've seen any  other family-oriented slice of life anime,
11:43
then Poco's Udon World will feel very familiar to  you but out of all of them, this is easily one
of
11:49
my favourites! It's adorably cute, has a warm and  cosy atmosphere, and also features
emotionally
11:55
touching scenes between its characters that puts  it a notch above many of its contemporaries.
12:01
Hinamatsuri is an outrageously funny slice of life  comedy about a member of the Yakuza whose
life is
12:07
turned upside down when a girl literally drops  onto his head without warning. Knowing
nothing
12:12
other than her name, and the fact that she has  psychokinetic powers, he reluctantly becomes
12:16
her caregiver. However it isn't long before  more girls arrive to try and bring her home,
12:22
or terminate her. Hinamatsuri leans heavily  on the absurdity of its situations to get a
12:27
laugh out of its audience, but what makes this  anime work so well is its wholesome moments
that
12:32
really make you feel for these characters.  Anzu especially is a very good girl who must
12:37
be protected at all costs! If you're looking  for belly-aching laughs, and a heart-warming
12:42
story, then this is the anime for you.
12:46
If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan,
12:48
I Would Die is an extremely underrated slice of  life comedy about a group of hard-core idol
fans
12:53
who support their favourite underground pop group,  ChamJam; in the hopes that one day they'll
make it
12:58
to the big stage at Budokan. If you looked at this  and thought it was just your typical idol
anime;
13:03
then you'd be mistaken, as this is less about  the idols themselves and more about the fans
13:07
instead. It's a light-hearted and amusing show,  with a very satirical sense of humour that pokes
13:13
fun at otaku culture in all the right places;  leaving me with a stupidly big grin on my face
13:18
by the end of each episode. It's a seriously  good anime that way too many people overlooked!
13:25
The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors  and Hostel Behavior is the story of
13:29
a high school freshman who's excited to  start living his new independent life.
13:33
But he soon discovers his new boarding house is  far from ordinary. Surrounded by an eccentric
cast
13:38
of characters, along with the senior he admires,  his daily life is neither peaceful nor boring.
13:44
This is easily one of my favourite romantic  comedies, as there's a cute kind of innocence
13:48
to the main leads' relationship that's just so  endearing. It's a subtler, sweeter type of romance
13:54
that isn't overly melodramatic or awkward to  watch. While the rest of the cast is a little
13:58
over-the-top, there's a warm family-like quality  to them that I really enjoyed; providing the
14:04
right balance of fun comedy and sweet romance  to create a wonderfully light-hearted show.
14:10
Sound of the Sky is a CGDCT anime about a girl who  joins the military in order to fulfil her
dream
14:16
of learning to play the bugle. Stationed in the  town of Seize, she and her fellow female
comrades
14:21
enjoy their peaceful lives, in spite of the  increasingly tense military relations of a
14:26
neighbouring empire. If you're not a fan of the  moe aspects of these types of shows, then
Sound
14:31
of the Sky will be a breath of fresh air! While  its characters certainly put the cute in CGDCT,
14:37
the show isn't your typical moe-blob affair  - as it exchanges some of its adorableness
14:41
for a more mature and meaningful story.  That isn't to say it's completely devoid
14:45
of light-hearted moments - just that you shouldn't  expect it to play out like others in the genre.
14:51
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K revolves  around a psychic high school student, who
14:55
wants nothing more than to live an ordinary life.  Unfortunately, the life of a psychic is far from
15:00
quiet! While he hides his powers to keep himself  out of the spotlight, he inadvertently draws
the
15:05
attention of many eccentric characters that he's  forced to deal with on a near constant basis.
15:11
What follows is a hilarious series of five minute  shorts, combined together to form full-length
15:15
episodes, that rarely outstay their welcome -  thanks in no small part to the show's quirky
15:20
cast of characters that each bring something new  to the table. Its English dub is also so good
that
15:25
I'd actually recommend it over the original  but, thanks to Netflix, only the first season
15:29
is currently dubbed - so keep that in mind!
15:33
Hitoribocchi is the story of a middle school girl
15:36
who wants nothing more than to befriend everyone  in her class. Unfortunately, her social
anxiety
15:41
makes this rather difficult; as she faints when  overwhelmed, throws up when nervous, and
concocts
15:46
elaborate plans just to avoid interacting with  people. Yet despite this, she musters up all
15:51
of her courage to reach out - starting with the  delinquent-looking girl sitting in front of her.
15:56
Hitoribocchi is a cute and relatable show that  does an amazing job of exploring the difficulties
16:01
of living with social anxiety, without ever  coming off as cruel or mean-spirited. It's the
16:06
type of light-hearted comedy that consistently  puts a smile on my face, which isn't something
16:10
I can say for other CGDCT anime that can  feel a little repetitive by comparison.
16:16
Wotakoi tells the story of an office worker  who goes to great lengths to hide the fact
16:21
that she's an otaku, due to her previous  boyfriend's dumping her once they found out.
16:25
A chance meeting with a childhood friend, and  fellow otaku, leads to her cover being blown
16:30
when he causally asks her if she'll be attending  the upcoming Summer Comiket. Shortly
thereafter,
16:36
they decide to start dating, and their adorably  awkward romance begins! It's rare to see a
romance
16:42
anime featuring adult characters, as they're  almost always teenagers, and it's even rarer
16:46
to have adult characters in anime that openly  enjoy manga and video games - as all too often
16:51
these forms of entertainment are made out to be  childish. As such, Wotakoi feels very
relatable,
16:56
and is also thoroughly enjoyable as well!
17:00
Non Non Biyori takes place in a small rural
17:02
village, far away from the modern conveniences  of the big cities, where the nearest stores are a
17:06
couple of miles away and the local school consists  of only a handful of students. The most
recent of
17:12
which is a girl from Tokyo, who must adjust to her  new countryside life with her new friends.
On the
17:17
surface, Non Non Biyori sounds almost too mundane,  and yet it's my favourite CGDCT anime
of all-time!
17:25
The relaxing, rural setting helps to set it apart  from many of its contemporaries, and its main
cast
17:30
of characters are all extremely likeable  - with Renge being a particular highlight!
17:34
The soothing nature of this anime will put your  mind at ease, so it's the perfect show to watch
17:39
whenever you're feeling anxious or depressed.
17:43
Gabriel DropOut is a supernatural slice of life
17:45
comedy about a studious angel who descends to the  human world to live and study among its
populace,
17:50
so that she may be recognised as a fully-fledged  angel. But while getting acclimated to her new
17:55
surroundings, she becomes addicted to video games  - leading to a lazy self-indulgent lifestyle.
18:01
Accompanied by her equally abnormal friends,  they attend school and hang out together,
18:05
whilst utterly failing to understand what  it truly means to be an angel or demon.
18:11
Gabriel DropOut is absolutely hilarious; made all  the funnier thanks to its sublime animation
that
18:16
helps to elevate many of its more visually-comedic  scenes. Its atypical character archetypes
and
18:22
slick presentation help to set it apart from other  CGDCT anime - making it feel fresh in
comparison.
18:30
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless centres on a high  school boy who wants nothing more than for
each
18:34
day to be as uneventful as the last. Accompanied  by his dependable friend, who often helps him
with
18:39
tasks he's unable to accomplish, the lethargic  teenager must constantly deal with events that
18:44
threaten the quiet and peaceful days he longs  for. This is the type of anime where its synopsis
18:49
really doesn't do it any favours because it  makes it sound far duller than it actually is.
18:54
While it may seem like this is just about our  titular main protagonist and his listlessness,
18:58
it's actually more about how those around him  react to his listlessness - resulting in it
19:02
being far funnier than it initially leads on.  It's a fantastic laid-back anime that perfectly
19:08
embodies what makes slice of life so appealing.
19:12
Working tells the story of a sixteen year-old high
19:14
school boy who works part-time at a family eatery.  While the pay is reasonable and clientele
polite,
19:20
he often finds himself at his wits' end when  dealing with his odd co-workers. One thing's
19:25
for certain though; there's never a dull moment  within the walls of Wagnaria! Working is not
your
19:30
typical workplace comedy, as the humour is deeply  rooted in the ludicrousness of its characters
and
19:35
the situations they're put in. In any real-world  scenario, these characters would be unemployed
19:40
because no respectable establishment would keep  on staff this chaotic, but that's precisely what
19:45
makes this anime so hilariously entertaining! To  top it all off; this is a complete story - with
19:51
compelling character growth, and a satisfying  ending, that's a rarity for this genre.
19:57
New Game follows a high school graduate, as she  starts her first day working for the video
game
20:01
company that developed her favourite childhood  series. Feeling both excited and nervous to be
20:06
working on the next instalment in the franchise,  she must quickly get to grips with her new
office
20:10
environment and the numerous challenges  of game development. Being a CGDCT anime,
20:16
you'd be forgiven for thinking this show is  just mindless adorable fluff, however one of
20:20
the strengths of this anime is how it respectably  portrays the ups and downs of game
development,
20:24
without ever being too dark or depressing. While  it may skew the reality of game development
20:29
somewhat, it does enough to inform viewers  about what goes into creating a video game, and
20:33
it's also just a fun show to watch in general!
20:37
Kimi ni Todoke is a slice of life romance anime
20:40
about a high school girl who is misunderstood  by her peers, thanks to her ominous appearance.
20:45
In reality she's just a sweet and unassuming  girl who only longs to be helpful.
20:50
When the popular boy in class starts talking to  her, everything changes - as she suddenly finds
20:55
herself in a new world, talking to different  people and making new friends - all while a
21:00
budding romance slowly starts to bloom. For the  longest time I held off from watching this
show,
21:05
as it appeared to be just like any other  shoujo anime but it turns out I was wrong!
21:10
While the story does feature misunderstandings  and melodrama, it never feels frustrating
21:14
because of how wholesome it is.  It's a pleasant, heart-warming
21:17
series that just makes you feel good! As for why I'm recommending this over Toradora,
21:22
Clannad or Fruits Basket; I feel those anime are  more drama-heavy, whereas Kimi ni Todoke is
a
21:27
lot softer and slower paced, so it feels more  like a slice of life than any of the others.
21:33
Wandering Son tells the story of two transgender  kids as they struggle with the harsh realities
of
21:38
growing up, relationships and acceptance. Taking  solace in one another, they walk a fine line
21:43
between liberating their true selves and being  ridiculed by their peers. There are few anime
21:48
that depict LGBTQ people as well as Wandering Son  does. It's a truly beautiful and eye-opening
show
21:55
that's sadly uncommon in this industry - as  LGBTQ people are rarely given the care and
21:59
consideration they deserve. It masterfully  handles the subject of gender identify;
22:04
shining a light on the many hurdles transgender  people have to overcome, and the bigotry they
face
22:09
on a near constant basis. Yet it maintains a  relatively positive outlook, which I very much
22:14
appreciated - as it could have easily gone  down a much darker and depressing path.
22:19
Hyouka is the story of an energy-conserving high  school boy who joins the Classic Literature
Club
22:24
at the behest of his sister. But his life is  turned upside down when he meets an inquisitive
22:29
girl who constantly pesters him into satisfying  her curiosity. Alongside fellow club members,
22:35
the group tackle cases ranging from  a self-locking door to the shadowy
22:38
history of the very club to which they belong!  Mystery anime can be very tricky to get right,
22:44
but fortunately Hyouka manages to succeed where  so many fail thanks in part to its grounded
story.
22:50
Simplicity is the key to Hyouka's success, as some  of the best mysteries are also the most
trivial.
22:56
It's not often you see mystery being paired with  slice of life but the combination works
extremely
23:00
well, and it's a delight from beginning to end.
23:04
Interviews With Monster Girls is about a high
23:06
school biology teacher with a deep fasciation  for demi-humans; half-human, half-monster
23:11
hybrids that have integrated into human society.  To fulfil his goal of learning more about them,
23:16
he conducts causal interviews with the girls to  learn about their daily lives and habits. It's
23:21
a simple premise but one that's highly engaging -  as it's genuinely fascinating to learn about
each
23:26
of the different monster girls and the various  hurdles they have to overcome in order to adapt to
23:30
human society. There also isn't any funny business  between the biology teacher and his
students! It
23:36
might look like a harem anime, if you were to  squint at it, but this isn't that kind of show.
23:41
It's just a wholesome, laid-back slice of life  comedy - and one that I enjoy quite a lot!
23:46
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid tells the story  of an office lady who's greeted by a dragon,
23:51
while on her way to work. A drunken excursion the  night before had led her to the mountains,
where
23:56
she had apparently offered the mythical beast a  place a stay, since she had nowhere to go. Thus
24:02
the dragon becomes a live-in maid, but nothing has  prepared Miss Kobayashi for the crazy
situation
24:07
of living with a dragon. What follows is a cosy  and heart-warming story showcasing the
whimsical
24:12
everyday life of these characters, and their  friends, as they slowly grow closer and become
24:17
a real family - with Kanna being a particular  fan-favourite, and for good reason! It's a show
24:22
that never fails to cheer me up, and is something  that every slice of life anime fan should watch.
24:28
Konohana Kitan follows a cheerful fox girl as she  starts working as an attendant at a traditional
24:33
hot springs inn. While her eagerness proves  to be more of a hindrance in the beginning,
24:38
everyone soon warms up to her playful  nature as she steadily learns the trade
24:41
of an inn attendant in a bustling village  of spirits. Seeing these characters
24:46
learning to work alongside each other, whilst  attending to their guests care and wellbeing,
24:49
sounds fairly mundane but it's such a pleasantly  soothing show to watch. The anime also does a
24:54
good job of leveraging its traditional Japanese  and fantasy setting to tell a variety of stories
24:59
pertaining to their guests and the problems  they're facing. Its heart-warming stories,
25:05
beautiful visuals, and endearing characters  all combine to create a truly wonderful anime.
25:11
ReLIFE revolves around a hopeless  twenty-seven-year-old who's given
25:14
the opportunity to change his life for the  better with the help of an unusual pill that
25:17
makes him appear ten years younger. Now  back in high school, he must re-adjust
25:22
to life as a student - all while slowly  discovering more about his fellow classmates.
25:27
ReLIFE has such an interesting premise that it  was able to hook me in right away, and
watching
25:31
the main protagonist stumble due to school  life not being as easy as he thought it'd be,
25:35
creates some great comedic moments but what truly  makes his character shine is how he uses
his life
25:40
experiences to thoughtfully help his classmates  solve their juvenile problems. It's a unique
25:45
spin on the typical high school slice of life and  one that I frequently find myself returning to.
25:51
Dagashi Kashi follows the son of  a once famous confectionery maker
25:54
who aspires to be a manga artist, despite his  father's pleas to inherit the family business.
25:59
But things start to change when an eccentric  girl shows up and decides to enlighten the
26:03
boy on the true joy of delicious and nostalgic  dagashi! This is the only anime featured on this
26:08
list to have an aggregate review score lower  than a seven however the lukewarm reception
26:13
is likely due to the fact that the anime is  one giant commercial for Japanese sweets.
26:17
For someone who's ignorant on Japanese  culture though, I found it to be fascinating;
26:21
particularly all of the trivia regarding the  dagashi's history. It's all wrapped up inside
26:25
a laid-back slice of life comedy - making  it an easy show to sit back and unwind to.
26:30
Barakamon tells the story of a calligrapher who  becomes enraged at a judge's critique of his
work
26:35
and proceeds to punch him in the  face. To aid in his self-reflection,
26:39
his father sends him to a remote island far  away from the conveniences of the city. There,
26:44
the moody artist must adapt to his new rural  environment and his quirky but well-intentioned
26:48
neighbours; finding new inspiration and developing  his own unique art style - that is, if a
certain
26:54
child would stop barging into his house!  Barakamon is the quintessential Iyashikei anime,
26:59
as its peaceful rural setting and light-hearted  comedy help to put one's mind at ease. It's
27:04
a heart-warming story, with an enjoyable and  memorable cast of characters, a good sense of
27:09
humour, and a relaxing setting that all culminate  to create an absolutely exceptional anime.
27:15
Love Lab is one of the most consistently funny  CGDCT anime I've ever seen! It's the story of
27:21
a student council president at Fujisaki Girls  Academy - a school known for its student body
27:26
being comprised of young ladies from honourable  families - who is admired for her elegant and
27:30
graceful demeanour. However, unbeknownst to  most, her heart is overflowing with curiosity
27:36
and passion for romance! To facilitate her love  research, she ropes the rest of the student
27:41
council into all sorts of romantic mischief.  Love Lab may seem like any other CGDCT anime,
27:47
but its witty dialogue, frantic comedic  sketches and hilarious cast of characters
27:52
quickly demonstrate that this isn't just another  mindless cookie-cutter title. It's a ton of fun,
27:58
and one that's sadly not as well-known as  it should be - so please check it out!
28:03
Nichijou primarily focusses on a trio of high  school girls and the often outlandish events
28:08
that occur around them in what would otherwise  be an ordinary day in their life - as well as the
28:13
stories of various people in the town where they  reside. Presenting an absurd mixture of normal
28:18
everyday life and pure insanity. Slice of life gag  comedies can be pretty hit or miss but
Nichijou
28:24
hits so hard that it sends you flying into  the stratosphere. What makes this anime work so
28:29
well is its impeccable animation that elevates  the slapstick humour to a whole nother level.
28:35
Without it, I don't think this  anime would be as revered as it is.
28:39
Regardless, it's a brilliant and damn right  hilarious show that is an absolute joy to watch!
28:46
Silver Spoon follows a high school boy who enrols  in an agricultural school to escape the stress
of
28:50
trying to live up to his parent's expectations.  While initially assuming he'll do well, he's
28:55
quickly proven wrong by his talented classmates -  who have been living on farms their entire
lives.
29:01
As he becomes familiar with his new environment,  he learns more about the world of
agriculture
29:05
and how it affects the lives of his new friends.  Silver Spoon is a delightful coming-of-age story
29:10
that serves as one part slice of life comedy and  another part documentary, as it does an
amazing
29:15
job teaching you about agriculture - without  shying away from its less than pleasant aspects.
29:20
Even if you don't care about agriculture,  there's still plenty to love about this anime,
29:24
so consider giving it a watch!
29:27
K-On is the story a ditsy girl who joins her
29:29
school's Light Music Club - believing it's about  playing simple instruments. When she
discovers
29:34
otherwise, she heads to the clubroom to quit - but  after hearing the group play together, a fire is
29:39
lit under her and she joins immediately! From then  on, they practice and hang out together;
having
29:44
a ton of fun whilst doing so! That description is  somewhat misleading, as it implies that the
music
29:50
is the main focus of the show - when in reality  it's more of a means to an end - as the real focus
29:55
is on the cute slice of life goodness that oozes  out of every pore! While certainly not the first
30:00
of its kind, K-On has nonetheless stood the test  of time and deserves all of the praise it gets.
30:07
Mushishi tells the story of a man who's one of  few humans who can interact with Mushi -
lifeforms
30:12
more primitive than plants and animals that  exist without any real purpose or meaning.
30:16
Employing himself as a Mushi Master, he aids  people suffering from problems caused by
30:21
them. Part of the brilliance of Mushishi is how  each episode is able to tell a complete story;
30:26
establishing a set of characters, a  problem that needs solving and the
30:29
eventual resolution without it ever feeling rushed  or predictable. Some stories end on a happy
note,
30:35
while others don't, yet it's able to maintain  a tranquil atmosphere throughout - even while
30:40
exploring more disturbing themes. If you've still  not seen this classic anime yet, then you owe
it
30:45
to yourself to do so - it's truly remarkable.
30:49
Shirobako is a slice of life drama about a
30:51
group of girls who vowed to one day make an  anime together. Fast forward several years,
30:56
and two of them have managed to land  positions at an animation production company,
31:00
while the others struggle to pursue their dream  jobs. Together, they'll learn that the road to
31:04
success is filled with many obstacles. Shirobako  is a phenomenal show that offers a rare
glimpse
31:10
into the anime industry; what goes on behind  the scenes and the enormous lengths it takes
31:15
in bringing your favourite shows to life.  It doesn't try to glamorise anything either,
31:19
instead it lays it out bare for all to see;  showcasing just how chaotic and stressful anime
31:24
production can be. If you love this medium as much  as I do, then you shouldn't pass this anime
up!
31:31
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is the story of a  cheerful high school girl who has a crush on
31:35
her oblivious shoujo mangaka schoolmate. When  she courageously confesses her feelings to
him,
31:40
he hands her an autograph instead; believing her  to be a fan of his work. Before long she agrees
to
31:46
be his manga assistant, and through the time they  spend together they encounter other
schoolmates
31:50
who assist them, and serve as inspiration for  the story. While technically a romantic comedy,
31:55
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun leans more towards a  slice of life comedy - as it frequently parodies
32:00
shoujo manga tropes to hilarious effect. It also  features one of my favourite casts in any anime,
32:06
as they're all delightfully quirky and fun to  watch! I'm still annoyed this anime never got
32:11
a second season - it seriously deserves one.
32:15
Himouto! Umaru-chan is about a perfect high
32:18
school girl who appears to be the ideal student;  kind, talented, and good looking. However her
32:24
older brother, who she lives with, knows the real  truth. Upon arriving home she puts on her
hamster
32:31
hoodie and transforms into an obnoxious layabout;  eating snacks and indulging in her hobbies -
much
32:36
to her brother's disdain. And it isn't just her  brother who takes issue with her behaviour either,
32:42
as this show doesn't sit well with a portion  of the anime community - which I find oddly
32:46
amusing. Yes, she's a brat but this isn't  the type of show to be taken seriously. It's
32:52
a light-hearted sibling comedy with a focus  on familial bonds and friendship. It doesn't
32:56
do anything particularly new for the genre,  but it's still an enjoyable ride regardless.
33:02
Somali and the Forest Spirit takes place in a  world where human beings have been persecuted
33:06
to the point of extinction; where a forest golem  is surprised to find a human child alone in the
33:11
woods. Taking the child under his protection, the  two travel through beautiful and dangerous
lands
33:16
in the hopes of finding Somali's parents. This  is yet another example of a slice of life anime
33:21
doing something different. It features all  of the wholesome goodness you'd expect to see
33:25
from this genre, with a darker adventure  narrative carefully woven throughout.
33:30
While it does feature some unsettling moments, the  anime manages to remain relatively light-
hearted,
33:35
with a warm and fluffy family-oriented  story, a strong supporting cast, and a
33:39
beautiful fantasy setting. And would you look  at that, it's also fairly underrated as well!
33:46
Kino's Journey revolves around a traveller and  their talking motorcycle as they venture through
33:50
various countries, encountering all sorts  of different customs; both fascinating and
33:55
tragic. But neither passes judgement because in  one way or another 'the world is not beautiful;
34:00
therefore it is'. Kino's Journey is a fascinating  episodic series that explores a wide variety of
34:06
interesting narratives, without ever trying to  cram any particular ideology down your throat.
34:11
It respects the intelligence of  its viewers by allowing you to
34:13
come to your own conclusions - much like the  protagonists themselves who are observers,
34:18
not revolutionists! I'll admit that it took a  while for this series to grow on me, as when
34:23
I first watched it I didn't really think much of  it, but it's since become an anime I hold dearly.
34:28
There's also a 2017 "reboot", however it serves  as more of a 'best hits collection' - so while
34:33
there is a bit of overlap between the  two, I'd recommend watching both series.
34:38
The Great Passage tells the story of  a socially awkward man who's asked
34:42
to join the dictionary editorial  department of a publishing firm,
34:45
when its veteran editor decides to retire,  in order to work on their latest dictionary;
34:49
appropriately called 'The Great Passage'. What  I really liked about this anime, was not only
34:54
seeing the daily lives of these adult characters  as they work together on something so intricate,
34:58
but also how the anime spans across thirteen  years - so you get to see these characters mature
35:03
over the passage of time, whilst also appreciating  just how much work goes into bringing a
dictionary
35:08
to life! Plus, it's just fascinating to see  how a dictionary is made in the first place!
35:13
I sincerely hope more people check out this  hidden gem. It's well worth the watch.
35:18
GJ Club is about the goings-on of a high school  club where the main protagonist is the sole
35:22
male member. Besides him is the pint-sized  club president who has a tendency to bite
35:28
him whenever she's mad or bored, her composed  younger sister who's always seen making tea,
35:33
a genius chess player with many brothers  who are each experts in a given field,
35:37
and a meat-loving girl with a feline personality.  Slice of life comedies that take place in a
35:42
clubroom are a dime a dozen, but what sets GJ  Club apart is the fact that the anime takes
35:47
place exclusively inside the clubroom; with  rarely any scenes set outside of it. As such,
35:53
it's highly character-driven,  but this is its biggest strength,
35:56
and the familiarity of the show's setting makes  each new episode all the more unpredictable!
36:02
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions is  one of my favourite feel-good anime
36:06
about a boy who used to suffer from eighth  grader syndrome when he was in middle school.
36:10
Wishing to forget about his embarrassing  past, he enrols in a high school far away
36:14
in the hopes of living a normal high school life.  But this proves to be difficult, as one of his
36:19
new classmates is a chunibyo girl who learns of  his past and becomes interested in him.
Combing
36:25
slice of life, comedy and romance, this anime  basically has everything I could ever ask for!
36:30
Quirky, yet lovable characters, genuinely  funny comedy, an absolutely adorable
36:35
romance that eventually leads to a satisfying  conclusion and a generally light-hearted tone
36:39
that all come together to create an extremely  wholesome show that I never grow tired of!
36:46
Lastly, School-Live is probably the most  unconventional slice of life anime on this list
36:51
and revolves around a bunch of girls enjoying  their carefree days as members of the School
36:55
Living Club - a club about making the most out  of life at school, so much so that they don't
37:00
ever want to leave! However this blissful  lifestyle is nothing more than a facade
37:05
to conceal the shocking and disturbing truth;  that these girls are actually in a zombie
37:09
apocalypse and have barricaded themselves  inside the school as the sole survivors.
37:14
Being part psychological horror, this anime  couldn't be further from a slice of life
37:18
and yet it manages to marry these two seemingly  incompatible genres together in a way that
just
37:23
works. Its equal parts cute and disturbing,  but one I can thoroughly recommend watching!
37:30
And that's it! I'm finally finished! Putting  this list together was a lot harder than I
37:35
thought it'd be, thanks in no small part to  the lack of consensus within the community
37:38
as to what is and isn't a slice of life anime.  As stated at the beginning of this video,
37:43
you may feel that some of these titles aren't  deserving of being called slice of life,
37:46
and if that's the case then I highly  recommend checking out my previous video
37:50
to get a better idea of my thought process. No  doubt this list is also going to upset someone
37:54
for not including their favourite slice of life  anime, so feel free to leave a comment below
37:58
if you'd like to recommend any slice of  life anime that you feel are a must-watch.
