ACTIVITY 1: DISSOLUTION: LANGUAGE LOSS

Reading comprehension on what Psycholinguistics is…and its correlation with other

areas…!

How does language

dissolution emerge?

Dissolution is the breakdown of language after brain damage caused by an unfortunate accident
that assaults the language area of the brain, by a traumatic event, or by genetics. A great
example of dissolution due to brain damage is aphasia which is an inability to produce or
understand speech as a result of brain injury. Thus, brain damage alters the person's ability to
communicate with others and can cause difficulties in expressing orally, as well as in
understanding, reading and writing.

TASK 1. Read Scovel, T. (2014). “Dissolution: Language loss”, pp. 70-89.” Then, create a
hierarchical a mind-map to illustrate neurolinguistics and language loss. Finally, in 200
words, summarize the main ideas written in the mind map.
Summarizing main ideas of the mind map (in 200 words)

The brain is a really important organ that is made up of a lot of neurons that
interconnect in innumerable synapses and is the one that regulates linguistic and
communicative activity.
Each of the brain systems that are responsible for regulating language act through the
activity of different brain areas such as Broca's Area (associated with the production and
articulation of speech) and Wernicke's Area (associated with the production of speech).
and speech articulation)
Damage to any of these, caused by stroke, genetics, or brain damage, can lead to the
dissolution of language presenting with language problems such as Aphasia (Broca's
Aphasia and Wernicke's Aphasia), Autism, stuttering, and disorders such as Down's
Syndrome. In addition, this implies the loss of language due to aging.
In aphasia, speech is normal, although the emissions may not coincide with the topic
being talked about, whereas in stuttering there is a greater repetition of a sound,
syllable, or word. For example with the word coach =co aa ach. On the other hand,
autism occurs in children and they remain irritated, another language problem is down
syndrome which is characterized by a typical physical appearance, intellectual
disability, and developmental delays.
The disruptions in the environment or in the genetic code that bring about speech and
language disabilities affect linguistic communication because they afflict cognition and
perception as a whole. For this reason, psycholinguistics is drawn by language into a
more general inquiry into the workings of the human mind.
