THE SEXUAL VIOLENCE AT UDAYANA UNIVERSITY

By: Luh Putu Damayanti

Good afternoon viewers.
Welcome to Today's News. In this section, I am Luh Putu Damayanti, will be accompanying
you up to 5 to 7 minutes forward, of course with the factual information.
Our today's section is about sexual harassment toward female students in higher education at
Udayana University Bali.
Reporting from the report by the Director of the Bali Legal Aid Institute, Ni Kadek Vany
Primaliraning, stated that there were 42 data of sexual violence cases that had occurred at the
Udayana University, based on the google form data distributed to Udayana’s students at the
end of 2021. Victims of sexual violence cases are not only women, but some are men. However,
the Director of LBH Bali cannot deny that the dominant victims are female students. The
suspect of sexual violence was obtained from fellow students, and the most prevalent were
lecturers as the main perpetrators or the actors behind it. Based on a report received by LBH
Bali in collaboration with BEM Udayana University, the victims experienced this sexual
violence when they were doing academic tasks and incidentally had to interact intensively with
the lecturer concerned.
According to Ibu Vany, she stated that there were still many cases of sexual violence
whose data had not yet been submitted to LBH because most victims were still afraid and
reluctant to report this problem. There are various reasons behind the postponed action of the
sexual harassment report, including threats that the victims will not pass certain courses and
the offer that they will be given good marks and pass quickly if the victim complies with the
sexual request of the lecturer. On another side, the Women's Activist and Gender Consultant,
Ibu Tunggal Prawestri stated that the main reason for the lack of reports of sexual violence that
occurred on campus was because the campus was still confused about dealing with these
problems. Furthermore, Ibu Tunggal said that the campus official worries about the reputation
of the campus will fall if they are concerned a lot about this problem.

On the other hand, the Director of LBH Bali and several Udayana students also stated that
although The Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of
the Republic of Indonesia No. 30 of 2021 about Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Violence
in Higher Educational Environments and the Udayana’s Rector Regulation No. 12/2021 have
been released these cannot guarantee that cases of sexual violence in Udayana will be solved
easily. There is still a need for socialization about the regulation, as well as the real
implementation of the rules from the campus. The lack of implementation in solving sexual
violence at Udayana University is proved by the 2 cases of sexual violence at Udayana
University have not been followed up immediately even though the report has been given by
LBH Bali. Administrative problems that pressured LBH to provide detailed reports become
odd to solve this problem. Ibu Vany the Director of LBH Bali stated that they did not dare to
give the detailed report because they want to secure the victims.
Do women deserve sexual harassment? Or do they deserve to feel safe? And of course, we all
hope that this case will be handled soon and the sexual violence against women can be solved
properly.
And that was the updated news for today. Good afternoon, viewers and see you in the next
section.
