A. LESSON PREVIEW

Introduction (2 mins)

Hello! Welcome to your new home here at PHINMA Araullo University! College life is exciting and
full of interesting things to learn that could truly be liberating. Today we will start our journey
into a wonderful world of learning. In this course, you will learn to examine the social and
political constructions of gender over time and across various social categories such as
geographic location, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, sexuality, culture,
and politics.

Every periodic term, the teacher will determine your grade based on the following components:
40% Periodic Exam Grade, 30% Comprehensive Portfolio, and 30% Quizzes. The final grade will
be computed as follows: Final Grade = [0.33×(1st Period Grade)] + [0.33×(2nd Period Grade)] +
[0.34×(3rd Period Grade)]. The passing grade is 50%.

I am sure that you are well aware of the current crisis the world is facing, which has affected our
lives and changed our usual ways. Because of this we will be using a different type of approach
to learning to safeguard our health and the health of our loved ones. This is called Blended
Learning Setup. What is Blended Learning?

The Blended Learning Setup is a combination of modular classes, and sometimes online which
means students:
● will answer modules on their own

B. MAIN LESSON

Content Notes (13 mins)

You can make use of a highlighter to highlight important details in the text. This will
help you study effectively.
The world is changing in all aspects. Today we live in a society full of changes which many still
may not accept due to factors such as culture, tradition, religion, race, and many others. One of
these changes involves gender and sex. There are many definitions for these two words but in
order to understand them better we first have to understand the word STATUS.

Status is a category or position that a person has which is an important factor on how he or she
will be defined and treated. Status can be acquired through achievement or ascription. Status
by achievement can be obtained through our own efforts. Status by ascription on the other
hand is obtained by birth. Thus, it is inherent. We may assume different statuses simultaneously.
This is called status set. It means you are can be a mother, daughter, attorney, patient,
employee, or passenger all at the same time.

The most important ascribed statuses are gender, race and social class. All societies categorize
members by status and then rank these statuses in a certain way, thereby creating a system of
social stratification or social differentiation. People whose status set are made of low-ranked
ascribed statuses rank at the bottom of the social stratification system. Those at the bottom of
this social stratification system are vulnerable to social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination.

Role is an expected behavior associated with a status. Roles are performed according to social
norms or shared rules that guide people’s behavior. Social norms determine the privileges and
responsibilities a status possesses. Females and males, mothers and fathers, and daughters and
sons are all statuses with different role requirements. The status of mother calls for expected
roles involving love, nurturing, self-sacrifice, and homemaking. The status of father calls for

Frequently Asked Questions

Since we know you have questions about this lesson, we write 2 items and answer it on your
behalf so it will be clear to you. Please read the following questions and the corresponding answers to
it.

Q: How does Status differ from Role?

A: Status is the basis of how people would consider your importance or look at you in society. If
your status is high, people tend to give you more respect and special treatment. If you are a
doctor for example, people would give you higher regard compared to a maintenance
personnel. Role on the other hand depends on status and at the same time on social norms, or
the rules that the society where you belong has. You may be a doctor for example but still you

have to assume the role of a son to your parents in the same way a janitor would.

Q: What is the difference between Achievement and Ascription?

A: Status by achievement is something that your work for. Example, you became a doctor because
you studied to become a doctor. Ascription on the other hand is given without you asking for it.
