She thanked all the participants for their attendance, for establishing more
Conferences in Bungoma Diocese and encouraged them to mobilize further in
other Parishes. Members were informed that a National Board meeting will be
held at Dahiro Parish on 30th September, 2023 followed by commissioning of
Bungoma Area Council on 1st October, 2023. All Society of St. Vincent De Paul
(SSVP) members to rehearsal for the occasion the previous day and be in uniform
on Commissioning Day. She explained how the SSVP Started, the purpose of the
training and ways of helping the needy in our societies.

2
She explained that the SSVP started in Paris in 1858 by 6 Catholic University
Students during the social unrest and great upheavals. This was caused by war
between the rich and the poor. Many people died, there were no jobs, some
people were homeless with no clothes, there was starvation and diseases. The
university students started meetings in order to find a way of helping them.

According to the history of the society, BI Fredrick Ozanam and his colleagues
Sr. Rosalie Render, Vincent De Paul and her sister Sr. Louise De Marillac were
the founders of the SSVP. They died not wanting to be given any title (Luke 5:
27-39).

To be a Vincentian, one must receive a call from God, be a Baptized, Confirmed

and respectful Catholic
As Vincentians we should:
o not be proud or seek titles
o serve the poor cheerfully
o empathize and not sympathize with the poor
o counsel and guide the poor spiritually
o seek for ways of helping the needy in their own Conferences
o be men and women of integrity
o not be hypocrites. Their actions to reflect purely to the needy ( youth,
vulnerable, widowers, widowers, poor in spirit, street children, elderly
should be approached) (Luke: 37:54).
Vincentians must do what pleases God.

The Structure of SSVP - picture of a fish with an eye inside the water in a circle
meaning:
o When serving the needy, God is present and seeing you
o Fish crossing – unity of the Vincentians
o Circle – SSVP is a worldwide society that indicates global equality of all
Vincentians

3
o Spiritually poor
o Street children
o Alcoholism
Some members of the SSVP are poor too. The office need to sit and decide on
how to help them not to be on the front line.
Endeavour also to identify the type of poverty the poor faces, encourage the
poor to understand what may be happening and help every needy whether
Catholic or non-Catholic.

Two or more people should visit, start with a word of prayer then share with
him/her first in order to know the challenges he/she is facing, show love and
persevere with the situation. Vincentians should be strong in Faith.

o All members to have discipline

o The President to conduct the meeting and if he or she is absent, the vice
president to take over. The Secretary to write the minutes, read them in
the next meeting and matters arising discussed.
o The Spiritual Leader to ensure the meetings commence and end with a
prayer
o Vincentians to show good impressions during meetings
o Free participation by all
o After the meeting, there must be secret pocket collection
o Meetings should not be conducted in a hurry
o Meetings to take 1 to 1 and ½

o To be Vincentian, one is called by God to serve the needy

o Non Catholics may join but not be officials. Office bearers to discuss and
share with the Rev, Fr. in charge before admission to the society.

1. Members requested for handouts in order to read them during their free times.

Having exhausted the topics of discussion, the meeting ended with closing
prayers by Donnaty Musungu at 3.00 pm
4
The training commenced with opening prayers led by Donnaty Musungu at 10.30
am.

The President of Larger Dahiro welcomed Rev. Fr. Pius Obuya, The National Office
and all participants.

This was effectively handled by the National Trainer.

o There should be Governance and Management

o Servant Leadership starts from the Conferences, Area Council, National
Council and the International
o Reports are written by Conferences and forwarded to the Area and the
National Councils whereby the National Board will discuss and forward to
the International Board.

- To be a full member – you have to attend meetings, be assessed and

commissioned
- Stake holders associate with members of SSVP but do not attend
meetings
- Donor member visits the Conference mostly but do not attend meetings
- Non Catholics are allowed to be members but they should not be
leaders
- Spiritual leaders to be respected and may be in attendance

5
- President
- Vice President ( appointed)
- Secretary
- Vice Secretary (appointed)
- Treasurer
- Aggregation Officer
- Twinning Officer
- Project Officer
- Youth
- CWA
- Spiritual Adviser
o In the SSVP, all leaders are the same
o In case of any problems, there should be consultations in the
Conference
o The Clergy( Sisters) to be involved if available
o There should be democracy (freedom) among members
o Suspension of members not allowed
o Some officials have talents in the work of the SSVP and it is a spiritual
call from God

A Conference is the foundation in the society. Conferences are to be

aggregated in order to be recognized in the society both Nationally and
Internationally.

An Area Council needs to hold a meeting mainly at the end of April and at the
end of the year. The reports should include registration, renewals, financial
reports among others and sent to the National Council. Only officials from
Conferensces to attend the monthly Area Council meetings with their reports.

At this juncture, participants were advised to solve problems and conflicts. They
were also reminded the fact that Vincentians are supposed to give and not to
receive.

She inquired if participants were ready to be commissioned and mandate them to

wear the Vincentian attire. She also advised the youth to be more active because
they have their own programmes both at the National and International levels. All
participants were reminded the commissioning date as on 1st October, 2023.
