She explained that the SSVP started in Paris in 1858 by 6 Catholic University
Students during the social unrest and great upheavals. This was caused by war
between the rich and the poor. Many people died, there were no jobs, some
people were homeless with no clothes, there was starvation and diseases. The
university students started meetings in order to find a way of helping them.
According to the history of the society, BI Fredrick Ozanam and his colleagues
Sr. Rosalie Render, Vincent De Paul and her sister Sr. Louise De Marillac were
the founders of the SSVP. They died not wanting to be given any title (Luke 5:
27-39).
The Structure of SSVP - picture of a fish with an eye inside the water in a circle
meaning:
o When serving the needy, God is present and seeing you
o Fish crossing – unity of the Vincentians
o Circle – SSVP is a worldwide society that indicates global equality of all
Vincentians

how to help them not to be on the front line.
Endeavour also to identify the type of poverty the poor faces, encourage the
poor to understand what may be happening and help every needy whether
Catholic or non-Catholic.
Two or more people should visit, start with a word of prayer then share with
him/her first in order to know the challenges he/she is facing, show love and
persevere with the situation. Vincentians should be strong in Faith.
