Sudlersville United Methodist Charge

Plowshares July 2019

John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Love One Another

I oftentimes recognize my self-centered, sinful nature when I fail to
lovingly listen to others. I recognize my lack of humility when I am driven
more by my work and less by compassion and concern for those in need
around me. I recognize my failure to live into my pastoral call when I am
more concerned with my future, than caring for the community in which
God has planted me.
Even in the church we can be self-focused and inward-oriented. We do
this when we are focused on our own comfortable clique of people we have
known for years and fail to welcome visitors with open arms. It happens
when we fail to reach out to those who haven’t been coming to church, to
give them a call to check on them and see if everything is ok. It happens
when we fail to pray for the needs of others because our schedule is so busy.
It happens when we don’t step outside our comfort zones in order to have
conversations with people in the church we may not know. It happens when
we fail to visit those who are homebound so that they can still feel as though
they are a part of a community of believers.
As Christians we are called to be in the business of reaching the least
and the lost. However, we tend to interact mostly with people who look like
us. We tend to remain in the same pew in which we’ve always sat. We tend
to miss visitors, and we fail to go out of our way to welcome them. We used
to know our neighbors but more than ever, we find ourselves isolated from
them. I want to encourage you to be mindful of the people around you. I
want to encourage you to concern yourself with the needs of others more
than your own needs. I want to encourage you to look around the church
and wonder, “Who can I encourage today? Who can I help today? Who can I
share the Gospel with today? Who can I invite to church today? Who can I
introduce myself to today?”
The godly love of the scriptures is a love that surpasses feelings. Godly
love is an action – a verb where we put the needs of others before our
own. As you freely receive the love of God, share it freely with others.

ST. PAUL’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH HISTORY
There are two new references available regarding the history
of St. Paul’s. The first is “The Official Membership and Church
Records” compiled by Betty S. Lockwood and Mary F. Engle.
This includes historical data of memberships, baptisms,
weddings, and deaths.
The second is a “Book of Memories of St Paul’s
United Methodist Church” that was created by Frances
Conley, who served as the historian of the church for a
long time and has been an active member for 65 years.
This large album is covered in red velvet and includes
valuable information, news clippings, registry of former
pastors, photos, and other information that dates back to
the 1860’s. St. Paul’s celebrates a wonderful heritage.
Mrs. Conley hopes you will enjoy reviewing these
historical documents and that many more individuals
will become longtime members of St. Paul’s. Both of
these books will now be located in the fellowship area/
Sunday school room at St. Paul’s and eventually
will be in a designated cabinet.
If you have questions about Mrs. Conley’s book,
don’t hesitate to talk to her on a Sunday morning.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE SUMMARY REPORT– CONTINUED

In other business, a 2.8% increase to minimum salaries for full time clergy was
adopted which was based on the Social Security Administration’s Cost of Living
increase. Throughout the Conference reports were given by the various Committees
of the Conference, such as the Vision Committee, a program called “Reach Every
Veteran”, the Congregational Development Corporation which helps churches
develop new ministries, etc.
Resolutions were adopted that recognized the 150 th Anniversary of the Wilmington
Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church and the Easton Diocese of the Episcopal
Church. Friday morning’s teaching session was Dr. Harold Trulear who spoke about
mass incarceration and prison ministry. His talk and handouts are available on the
Conference website. All Resolutions as presented were adopted as proposed
except for Resolution 14, which was withdrawn by the presenter because the
representatives of the two viewpoints could not come to an agreeable solution.
While they could not come to agreement, the two parties had good dialog on the
matter of ministry to LGBGTQ youths in the Conference. Friday evening concluded
with Ordination. Former Pastor Gary Priddy was one of the pastors who were
ordained as a full elder. Several folks from Calvary-Asbury came up to witness this
event which he greatly appreciated. The keynote speaker for the evening was Bishop
Hope Ward Morgan from the North Carolina Conference who spoke on sharing the
work of ministry with newcomers, inviting new ideas. Saturday morning brought
reports from the Conference Committee on Youth Ministries, which was followed by
the Service of Remembrance. Sarah Hemphill, the spouse of Reverence Hemphill
who served on the Sudlersville Charge in the 1950s was one who was remembered
this year as she had passed since the last Conference. Rev. Hemphill was present with
his son Mark and looked great! The Conference Adjourned to meet once again next
year on June 4-6, 2020 at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess
Anne.
Respectfully submitted,
Billie Carroll, Lay Member to Annual Conference.
