Pastor’s Pause: “Just Do It”

Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and
slow to grow angry.– James 1:19CEB

The most common thing associated with the Christian life is to take God’s word and go through the
process of internalizing it. When you first become a Christian you hardly know where to begin. Many
people read through the Bible every year. The writer of the Book of James talks about three actions that
need to be in our lives as a part of the process of internalizing God’s word.

1. Receive God’s Word - be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry, and clean house. We
don’t go on cruise control in our spiritual development. All of us, on a daily basis, need to work on being
quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger and to put away the moral filth and evil.

2. Do what it says! - Do not merely listen to the word but do what it says. A Christian cannot settle down
into passivity in his/her life, because Christianity is a life of action. It’s not critical that you have a
theological understanding of the Bible. What is important and vital is that you have a working knowledge
of the Bible. James suggests that we take a long and continuing look at God’s word. That means we are to
examine the word, to carefully investigate the word, and we are to research it. Do what it says!

3. What does that look like? If anyone considers him or herself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein
on their tongue, he/she deceives themselves. James explains what he has in mind in practical terms
Control your tongue, take care of widows and orphans – be concerned about those around you;
keep yourself clean –to a life of responsibility and personal purity.

God has provided, through the death of Jesus, that we live free from sin. He calls us to live as people of
freedom and to be serious about following Jesus. He calls us not just to be saved. He calls us to be
converted. He calls us not just to be challenged. He calls us to be changed. He calls us not to be persons
who are Christians when we’re in church. He calls us to be Christians when we’re in the world. He calls
us to follow him in this world. To receive his word, to do his word and to apply his word.

Blessings,
Pastor Bonnie

Grandparents Day:
On the first Sunday after Labor Day we celebrate National Grandparents Day,
which was officially celebrated as a national holiday in 1979 by President Jimmy
Carter. This year the date falls on September 12th.

Like Mother’s day and Father’s day we also have a whole day dedicated to our
grandparents. Grandparents and children have a special connection that is proven
to both make grandparents live longer, and also make children more emotionally
resilient. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to treasure that connection and
spend some quality family time together.

September 11, 2021– 20th Anniversary

The September 11 National Day of Service and

Remembrance (9/11 Day), is a chance to help others in tribute to those killed and
injured on September 11, 2001, first responders, and the countless others who
serve to defend the nation’s freedom at home and around the globe. September
11, 2021, is the 20th Anniversary of that tragic day. This is a day of remembrance,
patience and hope.
