Pastor’s Pause: “Detox Your Life”

So then, let’s work for the good of all whenever we have an opportunity, and especially for
those in the household of faith. – Galatians 6:10 (CEB)

Nowadays it seems like we hear about many products that are readily available that claim to
“detox” your body. The premise is that toxins build up in your body and aren’t good for you
and you should get them out of your body. We know that people who use drugs - prescriptions
or illicit, build up residual toxins from those meds and if they go without the drugs, their body
starts a natural detoxification process that is often painful to experience. The same is true in
our spiritual lives, as we build up residuals that need to be eliminated. Some of the problems
are caused by our own sin, while other problems are caused by the sins of other people.
The good news is that we are able to help detox our lives by applying some appropriate
scriptures and practices.

I. Detox your past. The first step is to FORGIVE! This means that we must let go of all
bitterness, wrath, anger, and slander. Ephesians 4:31-31 reminds us - Be kind to one another,
tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Next, we
need to accept God’s forgiveness, along with rejecting the lies of false teaching.

II. Detox your present. The first step is to repent of our sins and change our ways. Then we
can allow ourselves to abide in Jesus Christ. This step may mean that we rid ourselves of toxic
people from our lives. We need to find a way to be at peace with all.

III. Detox your future. This means that we must plan ahead to keep out of sin’s way.
Each day we should wake up and ask God to give us strength.

What do you need to do today to detox your life? Who do you need to forgive? Of whom do
you need to seek forgiveness and reconciliation? Are you reconciled to God? It’s not too late
to detox your life!!

Blessings,
Pastor Bonnie

while the kids are busy doing camp activities! The schedule also includes family and big-group activities, and
a "Parents' Night Off" while the kids have a movie night.
Accommodations provide the best of both worlds at Pecometh. Families sleep easy in hotel-style
accommodations, while enjoying meals at our Camp Dining Hall and lots of fun camp activities.
Churches are encouraged to sponsor participating families within their congregations. If you have any
questions about your church sponsoring a family for this retreat, please contact
Rev. Megan Shitama Weston at megan@pecometh.org. To learn more about the Single Parent

Philippians 4:6 -Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with

Dear Friends,

We pray you are doing well and enjoying all that is ours through Christ Jesus. Like many of you, our lives
have been a whirlwind the past few months with changes in covid regulations and substantial increases in the
cost of our daily needs. So many ups and downs. We rejoice that our Heavenly Father is in control and through
it all we have leaned heavily on Him. We want to take just a minute to celebrate the past few months of
ministry with you.

Watching the Children Grow

Our last adoption was in January 2021, almost 18 months ago. During the past three years we have
experienced the fewest adoptions in the history of the Children’s Home. Yes, Covid is the culprit. One blessing
from fewer adoptions has been the tremendous growth, healing and bonding among the children and their
caregivers. Yet, it has not eliminated the children’s desire to be adopted. They all long to belong to a family.
We would like to ask you to please pray for all of the children, but especially for our teens. We have three
families who have lived with us for seven plus years. Yes, they are older and it can be difficult for older
children to be adopted, but it is not impossible! Please pray for God’s best for these lovely teen families.

Renovation of Casa Fe Completed

During May, a mission team from St. James UMC, Atlanta, Ga. as well as friends from North Carolina and
Pennsylvania joined us in renovating the boy’s home. It has been eight years since we painted the house. The
teams worked both inside and outside to put a new coat of paint on the building. In addition, we began
stripping and refinishing all the furniture in the house including the kitchen cabinets, clothes closets, and
doors. The house is beautiful and we are so grateful for the mission team for helping us with this project.
Last week, a mission team from Lutie Watkins UMC, Llano, Texas, was here ministering at the Home.
This week, a team from Asbury UMC, Madison, Alabama, is with us. With the help of these teams, and a few
additional teams next month, we hope to complete the renovation of the girl’s house, Casa Esperanza, and
continue work on the exterior wall along the creek. During our two-year lockdown with covid, the children
made a small swimming hole in the middle of the creek, complete with a mud spa. When you come to visit us
make sure they give you the full body mud treatment.

Escuela Metodista at the Children’s Home

The children at the Home are enjoying a fantastic school year. During the past few weeks, the children have
enjoyed a trip to the museum and to a local library. They made their own newspaper and learned about early
forms of communication. Rainy season began early this year; so, the new gym has been a tremendous blessing.
The children are learning how to play basketball. There has been a lot of running with and kicking the ball, but
they are getting the hang of it!

We’ve Returned to in person Church services

In late April, the children began attending church services once again. The chaplain for the school at the
Children’s Home is also a local pastor at our Methodist Church in Tres Rios. We have begun attending his
church, Faro del Este. The church has a Sunday school program for all ages and this coming weekend, they
will have their first youth group meeting. We are happy to be worshipping with the body of Christ!
Guest Professor at Methodist Seminary
Though most of our Methodist seminary’s classes continue to be virtual, at the end of April we were blessed
to have an in-person course with Dr. Rusty Freeman, Wesley House of Studies at Truett Seminary, and guest
lecturer Dr. Todd Still, Dean of Truett Seminary at Baylor University. Dr. Still shared an inspiring four-day
course over the book of Philippians. Sixty local pastors were in attendance; they enjoyed the study immensely
and did not want the week to end. We all eagerly anticipate a return visit by our friends from Truett.

Mission project resumes in Guapiles

After a three-year hiatus, plans are underway for the return of mission teams to the Guapiles Methodist church.
Though significant years of work remain on the sanctuary, our immediate attention has shifted to the
parsonage. Pastor Daniel and local church members recently began preparing the foundation in advance of the
first team’s scheduled arrival in early July. Your prayers for the four groups scheduled to minister in Guapiles
this summer and fall are most appreciated. A brief update on our family, Sarah and Emma are in Waco for the
month of June. Sarah is working at Truett Seminary and Emma is working toward her CNA certification
(which will allow her patient contact hours needed for PA school) and taking Physics 1. Both girls will be
home during July and early August. Sarah will be doing an internship at the USA Embassy and Emma will be
taking Physics 2. Ray and I are doing well, we continue to rejoice in the life and ministry with which we’ve
been blessed. We are most grateful to each of you for your continued prayer and financial support. Everyone
in Costa Rica is experiencing a tremendous increase in their daily living expenses; we imagine the same can be
said for you all. Gas, food, medicine have all risen dramatically. Monthly expenses for the children’s home and
for us personally have increased approximately 30%. We would like to ask you to please pray for God to
supply all of our needs.

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Always in every prayer of mine making request for you and
with joy. For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5

All our love,

Ray and Lidia
2022 Annual Conference Report

The Annual Conference of the Peninsula-Delaware Conference was held on June 16-18th using the online
platform. Certain aspects of the Conference were held in person with attendance by invitation only. Thursday
morning the clergy held their session and then in the afternoon, the laity session convened.

Bishop Latrelle Easterling opened the Laity Session in prayer. The theme of this year’s Conference was
Perseverance in Hope, Faith & Joy with scripture Hebrews 12:1-2, “running the race with perseverance”.
During this session we saw a video by the Conference Council on Youth Ministries and a presentation by
Ragghi Rain Calentine of CONAM (Native American) Ministries Committee. Rev. Dr. Rob Townsend was
the keynote speaker who gave a very inspirational message on persevering in troubling times and letting the
light of Christ shine even through our differences.

Friday was the day of the Plenary (business) sessions of the Conference. There were 14 Resolutions before the
body of clergy and laity this year. All passed, some with minor amendment. They can be found on the
Conference website. Highlights are:
1. No bishop nomination will come from our Conference this year.
2. 6% increase cost of living for pastors for 2023.
3. Creation Care/Justice Committee formed.
4. Transparency measures will be made to strengthen stewardship of Conference
funding, property decisions, grants, etc.
5. The budget was adopted as presented.
6. 4 Lower Shore churches and 1 Delaware church disaffiliated with the United
Methodist Church.

Reports were given by the Congo Partnership Committee, Disabilities Commission, CONAM (re: Boarding
Schools and generational trauma), Africa University (50th anniversary), Black College Fund (50th anniversary),
the Bishop’s Holy Land Pilgrimage 2023, Conference Appeals, etc.

Services were held for retirees, memorials, and ordination & commissioning by invitation in-person, otherwise
online.

We were encouraged to explore resources through Pecometh (beyond camping and some free to
congregations), to watch the podcast “The Unfinished Church”, and to keep abreast of news through the
Conference website www.pen-del.org.

The 2023 Annual Conference will be held on June 8-10, 2023, hopefully in person. If you have any questions
concerning any of the information I have shared, please contact Pastor Bonnie or me.

Your Lay Member to Annual Conference,
