A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
1) Introduction (2 mins)

Are you the type of person who likes debating with friends? Or do you perhaps know someone who is
like that?

Whether you enjoy the challenge of getting into a debate or not, arguing with family, friends, classmates, and
even teachers are natural and important part of life. It is natural because we all have different experiences, and
values. Thus, we expect that clashes of opinions, because our individual differences are inevitable.

What people think matters. By expressing our thoughts, we allow others the opportunity to see a problem from
a perspective that they may not have considered before. And as we ourselves listen to others, we can
experience this same broadening of our perspective. Thus, an argument conducted with respect and fairness
to all participants can become a learning experience.

Such an argument, when done orally, is helpful to those who are able to participate in or witness the exchange.
But when the participants involved express themselves in writing, the presentation of arguments becomes
even more helpful. This gives them-- and those who are simply interested enough in the problem to pay
attention-- a chance to scrutinize what the different participants are saying.

Integration of Sex Education in Primary and Secondary Schools.

What is the writer’s stand or thesis on the issue?
The writer is deeply saddened and extremely concerned of the decision of the Department of Education
(DepEd) to integrate in our primary and secondary educational system a course on sex education.
What reasons are given to support this claim?
(a. Sex education doesn’t belong in schools, b. implementing sex education could actually send the
wrong signals to our children, c. Integrating sex education in schools is redundant, d. teachers do not
get trained, so they ignore the curriculum or do not know how to deal with it, e. students are too young
to be exposed in ideas and scenarios they are not even meant to experience yet, f. younger teenagers
should best receive instructions from their parents or from a mature guardian)
What kinds of support are given for the reasons?
(a. sex and sexuality are by their very nature private and intimate, b. If we teach children to use
contraceptive, we tell them in effect that it is alright to have sex thus they gain a false assurance, c.
Aspects of education on sexuality are incorporated into various types of programs, d. The teachers are
unprepared and unmotivated, e. college students should be the ones getting this kind of attention, f.
Parents have both the primary right and duty to teach their children the morality of human sexuality.)
What counter arguments are presented? How are these refuted?
Sex education aims to stop the spread of STIs and STDs and to lower down teen pregnancy rates in the
country and stresses abstinence and delaying sexual intercourse yet these topics should be discussed
in private and not in public spheres like the academia.

complete the position paper. If you think that the given space below is not enough for your answers, you can
write it at the back of this paper.

Issue: Social Media

Thesis: Excessive usage of social media such as Facebook can diminish student’s academic performance.

Reasons:

There are a lot of reasons as to why student’s academic performance can get diminished due to
the excessive usage of social media. One of this is due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has led us to a
profound influence on our daily lives, with extensive steps being made to limit the virus's spread.
Schools and other gathering places have been placed on lockdown for an extended period of time, with
people maintaining physical distance. Adolescents and young people have had to cope with a lot of
stress in addition to developmental issues. This acts as an escapism for a lot of people. Despite this,
research show that game addiction and internet use are on the rise, with negative consequences for
psychological well-being. Excessive use of the social media can lead to loss of creativity which wastes
the potential of other students to exert effort into their performances and ruin it. Making them
distracted and if not controlled, can lead to their time being misspent or worse they won’t be able to
pass the deadlines on time, which then affects their performance as a student.

Support:
As shown in a survey on social media's effects on teens posted by Common Sense Media in
2021, about half of the 1,500 young survey respondents said social media is very essential to them for
obtaining assistance and information, starting to feel less alone, and able to express themselves
creatively, as well as staying in touch with friends and family while socially distancing. When they are
unhappy, stressed, or anxious, 43 percent of people say that utilizing social media makes them feel
better. When LGBTQ teenagers are suffering negative emotions, 52 percent say that social media
makes them feel better. According to recent research, when teenagers use technology excessively or
are subjected to online bullying, they experience negative effects such as loneliness and unhappiness.
Fact that so many people are aware of the harmful consequences of these sites, it is tough to quit
utilizing them. They do, however, have a tendency to become addictive. However, minimizing our use
of social media to just 30 minutes every day can help us enhance our mental health dramatically.
Counterargument:
Even though there is some risk, the benefits can outweigh those risks; you need the proper
social media plan and strategy for how it will be used. As a student, social media has made countless
benefits into my learning and academic performance. It can be a bit overwhelming of the amount of
information we are getting in the social media, whether it would be through learning different digital
literacy texts which can also help in socializing to the other students and teachers. You can also

research and acquire accurate data for your school projects or homework. With this they help develop
your understanding and improve knowledge retention. Students may use this for real-time meetings
and collaborate on their projects on social media platforms, which helps increases the possibility that
they will spend time collaborating together and that they wouldn't have to meet in person as
occasionally as the project develops. Using social media to bring teams together only boosts and
reinforces your relationship to your fellow batchmates or classmates and lead to enhancing your
educational activities. For resources, social media may give a more immersive experience. In
conclusion, social media has its good and bad sides, it all depends on the user and how they are able
to use it as their advantage.
