Third Term, 2021

MAT/English
Answer comprehensively and substantially.
1.Give at least five approaches, methods or techniques . Present their usefulness and
appropriateness in a certain class situation. 25 pts
1.1 The Natural Approach takes its cues from how first language is naturally learned by
children. This process is then simulated for teaching adults a second language.
The emergence of speech isn’t a first priority. Listening comprehension is the priority.
So, early on in the process, students don’t need to speak at all. They have to observe, to read
the situation, to guess the meanings of words, to make mistakes and self-correct, just like
babies!

1.2 Total Physical Response is an approach to language teaching where gestures, actions and
movements play a vital role in language acquisition.
TPR believes that when your students see movement and when they themselves move, their
brains create more neural connections that make for more efficient language acquisition.
That’s why, when you teach TPR, you’ll be flailing your hands a lot, widening your eyes and
moving your body. This isn’t so you can catch up on your exercise. This is to teach your
students basic language skills.

1.3 This is a very specific approach designed for a specific type of language learner.
The type of student that most appreciates this method probably never intends to interact with
native speakers in the target language. She may be a psychology doctoral candidate studying
German in order to understand the experts in her field. Or she may be a culinary student
whose only desire is to make lots of delicious food and understand the French techniques in
her gastronomie book.

1.4 Grammar-translation Approach-This is the scene: A teacher stands in front of the class,
telling her students to turn their textbooks to chapter four, “Verbs and Tenses.” She writes on
the board the different ways of forming the past tense of verbs. She lists the general rules, and
this list is promptly followed by—you’ve guessed it—the exceptions to the rules, those special
cases that make grammar so exciting.
This is the classic way of teaching language. It began as a method to teach Latin and Greek
and was generalized to teach any second language. The Grammar-translation Approach uses
the students’ native language to teach the target language.

` 1.5 Community Language Learning

It’s called Community Language Learning because the class learns together as one unit. Not
listening to the same lecture, but interacting in the target language. The teacher’s role is that of
a counselor, a guide, an encourager.
Here’s what might happen in an innovative CLL class: Students sit in a circle. Because the
approach is learner-led, there’s no set lesson for the day. The students decide what they want
to talk about. Someone might say, “Guys, why don’t we talk about the weather?” That student
will then turn to the teacher (who’s standing outside the circle) and ask for the translation of his
statement. The teacher, acting as facilitator, will give him the translation and ask him to utter it
out loud. She’ll guide his pronunciation at the same time. The class, listening to the teacher
and student, are already learning from the interaction.
When the teacher is satisfied that the first student got the pronunciations right, she’ll deliver
her statement to the group again. (There’s a recorder standing by to record the first line of
conversation.)
2. React on the following ideas. You can agree or disagree to the idea offered by the authors by
presenting concrete and meaningful evidences.
According to a survey, many teachers, young and old cannot simply plunk and dump the
use of “chalk and board and lecture” as methods of teaching. They believe that these
methods are still very useful and helpful despite the occurrence of the advance technology.
What can you say about these? 30pts
During my practice teaching, I can safely say that I have imparted more information to my
students by using a blackboard and a box of colored chalk, than I have with my more recent
experiences with “modern technology”. I do not need to spend vast quantities of valuable
school funding to over complicate the teaching and learning experience in our schools.
Most modern schools have already moved to whiteboards. However, I agree that the
availability and ease of use of chalkboards are good advantages even in modern times. I know
that Japan (a highly developed country) still gives priority to the use of chalkboards (I think for
the same reason as China). And this develops the students’ imagination – they draw incredibly
beautiful drawings on the boards. It’s impossible to create something like that on whiteboards.
So I could agree with all these benefits from an educational perspective.

3. How do you see the effect of social media intersecting with mindset and students’ beliefs about
themselves and their intelligence? 20
In today’s world, social media is playing an necessary role on the learning style of
university students to achieve sustainable education. The result of social media on sustainable
education is becoming an essential and impelling factor. The world has become a global
village and technology use has made it a smaller world through social media and how it is
changing instruction.
Social media, the fast triggering the mean of virtual communication, internet-based
technologies changed the life pattern of young youth. Social media and mobile devices allow
These technological innovations give birth to a new kind of learning cultures, learning based
on the principles of collective exploration and interaction (Selwyn, 2012).
In addition to this, Mobile devices and social media provide excellent educational e-
learning opportunities to the students for academic collaboration, accessing in course
contents, and tutors despite the physical boundary (Gikas & Grant, 2013). Electronic
communication technologies accelerate the pace of their encroachment of every aspect of
life, the educational institutions incessantly long decades to struggle in seeing the role of such
devices in sharing the contents, usefulness and interactivity style. Adoption and application of
mobile devices and social media can provide ample futuristic learning opportunities to
the students in accessing course contents as well as interaction with peers and experts
(Cavus & Ibrahim, 2008, 2009; Kukulska-Hulme & Shield, 2008; Nihalani &
Mayrath, 2010; Richardson & Lenarcic, 2008, Shih, 2007). Recently Pew Research Center
reported that 55% American teenage age bracket of 15–17 years using online social
networking sites, example Myspace and Facebook (Reuben, 2008).

4. DepEd lacks resources to address its current input shortages (i.e. classrooms, teachers,
textbooks, seats, and sanitation facilities). With K to 12 and its added resource needs, how will
this be addressed? How will the K to 12 Program help students intending to pursue higher
education? 25 pts
Lack of classrooms in over populated schools affects the quality and quantity of
interactions between the teachers and students as well as on the quality of teaching and
learning. I witnessed and experienced this too during my primary and secondary and even
now still it is a problem for many schools. The findings from the professionals also cast
some doubt on the skills of the teachers in dealing with problems of their students
individually. Shortages of classroom needs to be treated worthy of the attention of our
government. Pointing on this situation is a problem we need to take action. They
lose the chance of the students to study comfortably without distractions and hindrances. I
also conclude that we may get the high quality of education if they will provide more
classrooms to accommodate new students coming from other schools and as well the
students that already lack their own classrooms.
With the adaptation of the K to 12 program, students are expected to graduate at an age
that is a bit older than past graduates of the old curriculum. According to DepEd, this would be
an advantage to the young adults venturing out into the professional world because they would
be much more equipped to deal with the higher level of learning as they enter college. With
this, they can choose to continue their education to higher forms which will be another great
journey to access essential learning developments.
