This note consists of all topics tested on Exam 1 and some sample problems to prepare you for the first
exam. All problems are from the homework so hopefully you have done them before.

Topics Covered

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division Principles. Permutations, and Combinations. Two-
Way counting, Recursions, Pigeonhole Principle, Catalan numbers, Compositions and Weak compositions,
Stirling Numbers, Integer Partitions, PIE and its applications (Derangements, Euler’s Totient Function), and
Twelvefold Way.
