Families thrown into extreme poverty as a result of conflict often require their daughters to withdraw

from school and to make other sacrifices for the family’s functioning and survival. When mothers are
forced to find work outside the home, older daughters are expected to care for siblings and do
additional household chores in their absence. As a result, they must stay home from school (WRC,
2009).
