Reflection Paper: Community Strategies/Interventions on Education

Education is a fundamental human right and an important factor for the sustainable
development of nations and communities. The significance thereof is recognized worldwide, and
has since been an integral part of world agendas. In fact, it plays a key role in the sustainable
attainment of the other goals by providing the skills and knowledge that enable individuals to
improve their economic and social standing in life that enables them to make decisions and
decide upon their own fate as human beings.
In the context of community development, community education focuses on
enlightenment of the people towards wanting to improve the standard of living of their
community, to establish an avenue by which members learn to work together in identifying
common problems and seeking solutions to the same, towards becoming a self-reliant
community. This brings in the importance of informal education, one which takes place in social
institutions such as communities, that is concerned with the generational transfer of communal
identity, knowledge, and skills.
Drawing from the inspiration of community education, an important insight I gained from
this topic is that a desired outcome of education is not the alleviation of an individual’s standard
of living, but rather to hone individuals that aim to contribute towards the betterment of the
greater society that is self-determined and self-reliant.
