INTRODUCTION
AutoCAD Civil 3D software is a design and documentation solution for civil engineering that supports building information
modeling (BIM) workflows. By learning to use AutoCAD Civil 3D, you can improve project performance, maintain consistent
data, follow standard processes, and respond faster to change.
Civil 3D software is a civil engineering design and documentation solution that supports Building Information Modeling
workflows. Using AutoCAD Civil 3D, you can better understand project performance, maintain more consistent data and
processes, and respond faster to change.
Civil 3D is an engineering software application used by civil engineers and other professionals to plan, design, and manage
civil engineering projects. These projects fall under the three main categories of land development, water, and
transportation projects; and can include construction area development, road engineering, river development, port
construction, canals, dams, embankments, and many others.
Civil 3D allows is used to create three-dimensional (3D) models of land, water, or transportation features while maintaining
dynamic relationships to source data such as grading objects, breaklines, contours, and corridors. As industry-leading
building information modeling (BIM) solution, Civil 3D is well known in the civil engineering community and widely used on
a variety of infrastructure projects both large and small.

Topic 1 - Interface and Feature Function
1.0 AutoCAD Civil 3D Ribbon
The AutoCAD Civil 3D ribbon is the primary user interface for accessing commands and features.
Commands available from the ribbon are organized into tabs. Each tab is organized into a series of panels.
The ribbon is typically turned on (displayed) by default, and can be displayed or turned off by using the Ribbon and Ribbon
Close commands.
There are two basic types of ribbon tabs: static and contextual.

1.0.1 Static Ribbon Tabs

Static ribbon tabs are always displayed when the ribbon is turned on.

1.0.2 Contextual Ribbon Tabs

Contextual ribbon tabs are displayed automatically when you select an object or invoke an object-specific command. For
example, when you select a pipe network object, the Pipe Network contextual tab is displayed.

Contextual tabs contain commands that are related to the currently selected object. Most contextual tabs can be closed
simply by deselecting the object.

1.0.3 Multiple Object Select Ribbon Tabs

When multiple types of objects are selected simultaneously, the Multiple contextual tab is displayed in the ribbon. For
example, if you select both a pipe network object and an alignment object, the Multiple contextual tab is displayed.

1.0.4 Launch Pad Panel

AutoCAD Civil 3D contextual ribbons include a Launch Pad panel that provides access to commands that you might use next
in your workflow.

For example, when you select an alignment object, the Alignment contextual tab is displayed. The Launch Pad panel on the
Alignment contextual tab provides a variety of commands that you may want to use next. For example, you may want to
©2018

create a corridor, intersection, or data shortcut from the alignment.

1.2 Understanding the Toolspace
1.2.1 Explore the Prospector tab
This tutorial uses Intro-1.dwg from the training folder

1. In Toolspace, click the Prospector tab.

Toolspace can be docked, but it can also float. The Prospector tab provides you with a categorized view of all objects
in the drawing.
Note:
If the Toolspace is not visible, enter ShowTS on the command line. The command line is not case sensitive, but in this
document, commands are written in mixed case.

2. Click next to the (Sites collection)

3. The drawing contains only one site, Site 1.
4. Expand the Site 1 collection.
Notice that the Site 1 collection includes sub-collections for the following objects:

 Alignments

 Feature Lines

 Grading Groups

 Parcels
5. A site provides a logical grouping of objects that form part of the same design project, or are otherwise related. An
object can belong to only one site.

6. Expand the (Parcels) collection to see the names of individual parcels in Site 1.
Notice that the drawing includes different types of parcels, such as Single-Family and Easement.
7. Click a parcel name.
The parcel is displayed in a preview region of the Prospector tab.
Note:

If the preview does not work, you can activate it. First, ensure that the item preview button at the top of
the Prospector tab is pressed in.
8. Then, right-click the Parcels collection and click Show Preview.
9. Right-click one of the Single-Family parcels. Click Properties.
The properties of the parcel are displayed in a dialog box. Note the detailed survey data shown on the Analysis tab.
Review these properties as you wish, but do not change anything.
10. Click the Information tab. Change the Object Style from Single-Family to Open Space. Click OK.
©2018

Notice that the appearance of the parcel changes in the drawing, and in the item view preview. The name of the
parcel changes in the Parcels collection on the Prospector tab. This happened because the style name is part of the
Page4

naming template that is associated with the parcel.

TEL: +603-7954 2462 FAX:+603-7958 2462 www.bina-i.com
A distinct set of custom styles for each AutoCAD Civil 3D object type can be saved in a drawing template. Object
styles can be changed as needed to change the display of an object.

1.2.2 Explore the Settings tab

1. Click the Settings tab.
The Settings tab contains a tree structure of object styles and settings for the drawing. Like the Prospector tab, it has
object collections at several levels.

2. Expand the Settings tree by clicking next to the Intro-1. Expand the (Parcel) (Parcel Styles)bcollection.
This collection displays the styles that are available in the current drawing.
3. Right-click the Standard parcel style. Click Edit.
The object style dialog box displays the current style attributes. Explore the contents of the tabs to see the various
attributes that can be changed when you create a style.
4. Click Cancel.
Further exploration: Expand the Settings tree and look at several style objects and commands. Right-click various
objects to see the available menu selections, but do not change anything.
