"And that's as close as I ever thought I'd get to RENT"

I am a professional writer. A teacher of creative, argumentative, analytical and

research writing. And yet putting into words exactly what these people and
this show mean to me is perhaps one of the most daunting blank white pages I
have evert sat before. On the one hand there is RENT and everything that
comes with this groundbreaking show. On the other are some of the most tal-
ented and wonderful people I have ever had the opportunity to watch
grow. So, I will attempt to tackle these topics separately and if anyone has ev-
er listened to me tell stories, they know a meandering and merging of both will
eventually occur. At least I hope this to be the case.

I first encountered RENT when I was a rising high school junior attending the
NSLC "Inside the Arts" program in Chicago. It was my first real time away
from home without family and I made a lot of wonderful friends on that
trip. People with a similar love for theatre and dramatic expression. For our
final project at the end of the camp we had to make some kind of capstone per-
formance encapsulating the many varieties of art featured on the trip: acting,
singing, dancing, painting, architecture - it was a whole thing. As we worked,
we developed a story that (in our sixteen-year-old brains) felt compelling, but
we needed something that would tie it all together. A vocal feature of
sorts. Someone in the group suggested we sing “Seasons of Love”. I was horri-
fied when everyone else jumped in shrieks of agreement like it was the obvi-
ous and perfect choice. I had no idea what they were talking about. They
played me the song and in moments I knew I had to get my hands on this musi-
cal. I bought the original Broadway recording and began to listen - but without
context, a lot of the songs' meanings didn't fully resonate. My family and I
went to see it at the Nederlander on Broadway. And that was the closest I ever
thought I'd get to RENT. We enjoyed it, but due to the fast-paced nature and
stationary sets, I still didn't totally get it. Chris Columbus's movie version fea-
turing most of the original cast came out not long after and RENT began to take
shape in my mind. I loved the characters - that they were REAL people. And
the stuff they were going through was stuff that happened to people. I loved
the story - it wasn't Disney, not everything was tied up in a nice, neat bow with
a rainbow floating overhead after the finale. And the music was unlike any-
thing I had ever heard from a musical. I thought musicals sounded like Into the
Woods or How to Succeed in Business... they couldn't be... rock music. I begged
my teachers to make it our senior musical. They looked at me and laughed -
you can't do R-rated content in high school. So, I filmed my own version with
my friend group. But they were just good friends, not singers and performers...
so, we lip synched along with the Broadway track and filmed behind grocery
stores and in neighborhood basements as we attempted to recreate New York
City in suburban Pennsylvania. I just watched this version the other day and
it's hilarious. The girl who played Mimi took me to Philly to see RENT on tour
the same year. Good memories. And that was the closest I ever thought I'd get
to RENT. I went to college, studied English and education, and never once set
foot on a stage. So, to flex my creative muscle I made a new group of friends -
equally as loyal as those in high school and equally not singers or perform-
ers. So, it only made sense to film several feature length movies over our four
years. We would hold premiers at my town house and our professors would
dress up and attend. When we didn't know what to make for our seventh and
final movie, what would have enough emotional gravitas to do our years to-
gether justice, again I turned to RENT. We did it grittier and with more precise
costumes and choreography and sets (despite rural Virginia). Amazing memo-
ries. And that was the closest I ever thought I'd get to RENT. I was hired to
teach here out of college - Belmont Ridge Middle School - seventh grade Eng-
lish teacher and musical director. My very first production 31 shows ago was
here. And finally, I understood why my high school teachers wouldn't allow
RENT - it certainly was not going to happen with young kids - so again I put
RENT away.

Which, as promised brings me to my greater topic and love, these kids. Many
of whom are no longer "kids" at all. With as much as I loved RENT, I was able
to put it away with ease because I wanted to dedicate all of my attention and
creative energies to what the students sitting before me needed. We needed
Disney and show-choir to build their confidence. We needed one-dimensional
characters, smiles, hand-motion-dancing, and two-part harmony. We needed a
foundation. Little did I know, all the while we were preparing for RENT. After
word had spread of our award-winning middle school program, I was hired to
direct summer stock community high school theatre. When asked what show I
would like to tackle - stupidly I suggested RENT. It wasn't the right time and
thankfully I was rebuffed. "Choose something PG-13," they said. "Something
that will attract high school talent without being gratuitous." RENT, gratui-
tous!? After the success of Legally Blonde, I pitched it again. But why fix what
aint broke and instead we performed Bring it On... a musical written by the
then relatively unknown Lin Manuel Miranda. Again, seeing it as a lost cause, I
put RENT away. Then I started Infinite Arts and after three wildly successful
inaugural shows we made the announcement we would finally perform RENT -
Summer 2020. Global pandemic. Again, RENT pushed aside (who wanted to
be reminded of life-threatening disease anyway). 2021 was all about coming
back. We turned to Shakespeare and dressed it up to be modern - after years
of perfecting our singing and dancing it was the year of looking inward at our
acting. Again, we were preparing for RENT. Right around a year ago we an-
nounced that RENT would conclude our summer season 2022. And here we
are. Not in the venue originally planned, but one that worked out too perfect-
ly. We came back to the beginning. The sights, sounds and smells of our
roots. The nostalgia of Belmont Ridge Middle School where it all - we start-
ed. This is what I have been waiting for patiently (and sometimes not so pa-
tiently) for 20 years. Two decades. Longer than every kid on stage has been
alive. And that's as close as I ever thought I'd get to RENT. And we started
rehearsals. Our incredible talent took the stage. They were meticulously pre-
pared. They cared. They worked to get everything perfect. Not just "good
enough," but immaculate. They were veterans who had spent every show for
the past seven years with us. They were students who hadn't performed on
stage since their final middle school bow. They were the rising 9th 10th 11th
and 12th graders eager to be the next theatre class of RVHS. They were THS
and SBHS and our newest friends from IHS. They were cast and crew or as I
like to refer to them, a company, a community. And suddenly (as often hap-
pens but never thought it could with THIS show), RENT itself was not the most
important entity in the room. RENT is just gorgeous music, incredible story,
rich character, challenging tech and sets, period props and complicated coordi-
nations. It's just nuance and facials and blocking and choreography. It's just
solos and duets and harmonies. It's just a show. A musical is only a musical
until you make it more than a musical. These students have made it
more. This is their culmination of many years of hard work - with us or else-
where. This is what theatre means for so many kids. This is friendship and
group chats and a place for all. This is inside jokes, real tears, secret dances in
the wings. This is carpools and post-rehearsal-hangouts. This is listening to
my daily lectures and teasing me for in fact NOT knowing every single word of
RENT (only 99% of them).

We love these kids and we're going to miss them. This graduating class made
theatre cool and inclusive. They are role models. They brought us back to life
after 2020 could have easily shut down everything we had worked for almost
a decade to build. And they inspired the students under them. Students who
are ready and eager to take up the mantle and be the Infinite Arts seniors and
juniors and sophomores and freshmen. Students ready to follow in this legacy
and continue to build it into their own. They esteemed the elementary school-
ers in Newsies who will be with us for the next eight years. They have been
mine and Jill's teachers, allies, supporters, and some of our closest, most loyal
and trusted friends. They are the opposite of RENT. A "RENT" is a tear in the
fabric of society. (It's a double entendre - not just paying the RENT). But there
is plenty of RENT out there today. These kids are cleaning up our messes and
reshaping the landscape. They are the coming together. They are the neces-
sary patchwork. Because of them I didn't merely "get close" to RENT. We, to-
gether, were able to live it and then transcend. But we had been all along. And
silly me... it took me until now to see it. The supreme honor and pleasure is
ours. Please enjoy, Jonathan Larson's iconic, Tony-award-winning, world-
redefining musical. It's a masterpiece. Family. Friends. This is RENT.

(Director/Choreographer)
Jason Augustowski, CLT lead of Creative Writing and
AP English Language at Riverside High School, Direc-
tor of RiverHawk Productions at Belmont Ridge Mid-
dle School and Managing Member of Infinite Arts
wants to welcome you to this show. No, not a show,
an absolute spectacle. A tour de force. RENT is his
31st show and is sure to be the best to date (as I'm
sure you heard all about after reading the Director's Note). These shows have
garnered well over 100 awards from national adjudication associations and
continue to raise the bar for what can be accomplished in elementary, middle,
and high school theatre.

If you like what you see on stage, get involved. We have programs for students
ages 10+ and direct shows virtually year-round. Visit our website, peruse our
tabs, contact us, and get involved. We open our doors to every student in
Loudoun County with unparalleled experiences in theatre instruction. Ask any
student in this show, we take experience and talents of all levels and shape
them into high-quality, compassionate, and confident performers while also
offering leadership opportunities behind the scenes of each show. So, get in-
volved. You will make TONS of new friends. With six full-length Broadway
productions a year, we have chosen BOTH quantity and quality. SO AGAIN,
GET INVOLVED (and bring your friends). The parent community surrounding
these shows is just as close. Want to get to know an incredible group of like-
minded, creative people? Want to swing a hammer or wield a saw or paint-
brush? Want to graphic design, manage publicity, take photographs, design
costumes, hair, makeup, lights, sound, props? You name it, we have an oppor-
tunity and an incredible tribe for you. We really are a full-community family
and want you to be our newest member.

Now for the boring history stuff: Jason attended Virginia Tech, where he
earned a B.A. in English and an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction. Having
participated in theatre in high school, and filmmaking in college, Jason's great-
est privilege has been working with these incredible students over the past
eleven years. They are truly some of the greatest human beings and most tal-
ented performers he has ever met. This show, as always, is dedicated to them.
Thank you for coming and supporting the arts. Enjoy the show and I hope to
meet YOU very soon!

Jill Kerr holds a B.S. in Elementary Education
from Mount. St. Mary's University and is cur-
rently the Digital Experience Specialist at Sand-
ers Corner Elementary School. This summer
marks the 10th year she has been directing with
Jason. Jill has been honored three times by National Youth Arts for vo-
cal direction and shares these honors and the success of every show
with the exceptionally talented students she’s been fortunate enough to
work with throughout the years.
Jill and Jason began Infinite Arts to give the students of Loudoun
County opportunities to perform that are unparalleled in our area.
Infinite Arts prides itself on giving students a space to tackle shows that
challenge them both on stage and off, We believe in giving students of
any age, level and experience, theatre instruction that makes them con-
fident performers in an environment that fosters friendships that last.
Infinite Arts started as a summer stage program and has grown and
expanded to produce virtually year round shows that offer something
for every student. We are further proud to offer opportunities for
students to be involved behind the scenes as well. We understand that
all our students have varied interests and provide leadership opportu-
nities behind the scenes of each show as well. I encourage you to get
involved! Follow us on social media, visit our website, email us and ask
us questions after the show! We will be thrilled to meet you and show
you how you can become part of the Infinite Arts family!
Now please enjoy RENT! Each show I have directed, I have had the joy
of watching the students make the show grow and transcend all expec-
tations. Rent is no exception. They have raised the bar yet again and
have so much to celebrate with their amazing production!
