    Nikkatsu Selected Films |r INVITATION TO NIKKATSU ROMANTIC PORNOGRAPHIC FILMS Nikkatsu Corporation, one of the major film companies in Japan, has been filming Romantic Pornographic Films since 1972. With superior film making techniques and placing importance on drama have led to a perfection not seen in films of this Kind and have been well received by the audience, Although these films are shorter than regular feature-length films, they have other advantages such as dealing with daily episodes and in dealing with mate- rial which were difficult to handle before, As can be geen from the contents of some of the films we are calling your attention to, we are proud of the diverse topics the films deal with. Moreover, we would ike to stress the fact that they have strong plots and excellent camera work, 50 we are confident that they will be ‘welcomed as popular entertainment. ‘We are not exaggerating in saying that when these films were shown, it created ‘a great sensation. Aside from the fund- amental like-or-dislike of these films , they are different from the type of films that formerly used sex scenes as the draw- ing card. It came as a surprise that our films are higher in quality and richer in contents. ‘Nikkatsu Corporation is famous for produ~ ing outstanding directors and staffers. ‘Many of the foremost directors and cam- eramen in the Japanese Film World today were originally with Nikkatsu. Nikkatsu's Romantic Pornographic Films threw open ‘the doors to young directors who did nat hhave the chance to direct until then and the films are the result of their enthusi- asm and exceptional ability. Coupled with competent staffers and the advantageous use of the studios also. made the films possible, so it is only natural that they are highly thought of. However, thedirectors have their worries ‘over how to present their films. In the film world in Japan, there is a Motion ——— Picture Gode of Ethics Gommittee which voluntarily checks films from an ethical point of view. ‘There are restrictis especially on sex scenes, so the rectors are handicapped and have to di- rect looking for loopholes. In 1973, “LOVE HUNTER" (Koi-no-Karyudo) and “THE SMELL OF THE WILDCAT" (OL, Mesuneko-no-Nioi) passed the Co- mittee’s screening but the films were charged as obscene by the Metropolitan Police Department. This case was taken to court. There are many Nikkatsu films that are outstanding movies and have gained a wide range of fans, especially among young people who have responded enthusiasti- cally. At university festivals, Nikkatsu films are shown and discussions are held. In 1974, Director kumashiro directed “THE WORLD OF GEISHA” (Yojohan Fusuma-no-Urabari), a story of the gay= quarters in the 1920's and received the award for the Best Film from the Kinema Junpo, the highest authority among motion picture magazines in Japan and firmly established the standing of the Nikkatsu Romantic Pornographic films. In 1975 di- rector Tanaka received awards for the Best New Director and one of the best ten films from Kinema Jumpo for his "A WOMAN NAMED ABE SADA’ (Jitsuroku ‘Abe Sada). Aside from the above films, Nikkatsu Romantic Pornographic Films encompass every situation possible in the sphere of entertainment. There are no hard core scenes but unlike other films of this kind which make sex scenes the drawing card, they are all interesting films and have the power to appeal directly to the hearts of the audionce. Countries differ, it is true, but if you see our films, we believe you will ap- preciate them like the people of our own country.
