Week 4

For the fourth and the last week, as discussed earlier we had to make a presentation on one
Architect or a Planner. This exercise was given to us to explore that how a person who was
working in our own field has adopted a creative approach to answering a problem. And to make
us realise that how we as students of the same field can also do the same and reach great
heights in our carrier.

The planner that we selected was Clearance perry, For his work related to the neighbourhood
concept. We had studied it in the 1st sem and were greatly influenced by it and Were very
fascinated by the concept and wanted to bring it forward as creative thought.

Then, we came together on a google meet on the weekend to work upon our presentation. We
decided the template and discussed what topics we can focus upon. We decided on topics such
as we would first be describing creativity. We then went onto the early life of clearance perry.
After thet we went for describing about this work and then coming straight t his most famous
concept of neighbourhood unit and community life. We then went onto how it has been applied
in the various places in the world and its usability even after about 100 years. We distributed the
topics among ourselves and worked on them separately while being on the meet. We kept on
discussing things on the meet and telling each other unique and interesting facts. We also
cracked jokes among ourselves, thus having fun and working. We also wrote a conclusion
regarding what we learned by working on this exercise and studying Clarence Perry. After
finishing the presentation, we discussed how to make our script and how to present it in the
class. Then, we practised our presentation and thus finished with our work.

But when we presented our work I was literally very disappointed. Poonam ma’am joined in, she
didn’t watch our whole presentation. She called it just “last semester’s work”. Tell me one thing,
did we cover Clarence Perry last semester or did we cover the neighbourhood unit?
I’ll just say preaching creativity without actually even appreciating it when creative stuff is done
is just pathetic. Why even teach something you can’t even recognise. And on top of all that
calling zoning just copied off of last semester is just the worst. We made this presentation and
selected Clerence perry because we thought that as we has read it in the last semester,people
would be better able to understand and relate with it.

Though whatever happened I enjoyed all the four classes. It was also very interesting to learn
about the various other presentations and the other architects/planners and their works. Though
I am worried that the presentation marks we got might be influenced by the critical cooments of
Poonam ma’am. We had made the presentation wholely with the purpose of presenting the
creative aspects of the planner and not dived deep into his works. Hope that would be taken into
consideration.
